Bungalows were clean, staff well meaning but inexperienced, owner absent and unfriendly, sadly as it should be a great place to stay with a little atmosphere. Excursions were excellent, food as well. It was the only time in our whole trip to Madagascar that we were not welcomed by the owner or manager. Sadly as it should be a perfect spot to explore the region

Response from ramenalakana, Propriétaire at Hotel Lakana Ramena

The Lakana is not on the beach. It is not in or even near the town of Ramena. This means there is no sunset view, no access to any restaurant, bar, or other fun activity you seek at the beach. The staff work from 6:30am to 10:00pm, 6 days a week. That helped me understand why the staff are so stand-offish, and bizarrely unwelcoming compared with communities and hotels throughout the rest of Madagascar. The food is mediocre, and because you are far from town, you have no other options. The rooms are dated, and kitschy rather than charming – dated color schemes, cheap and cheap-looking plastic towel racks, soap dishes, and toilet paper holders. There is hot water, and great water pressure, but no natural light and bad lighting make the bungalows dark and unwelcoming. There are mosquito nets, but they do not fit the beds or close properly, so they are useless. The common space, including the dining area, feels like the owner’s house… He moved around without speaking, greeting, or wearing a shirt while his nanny tried to quiet his crying child without his attention or effort. This makes the common are feel like his personal living room, and not a neutral and comfortable space for guests. You will not be miserable here. It meets the basic requirements for lodging you pay for. With the dozens of other options between Diego and Ramena, my most enduring emotion is regret. I came all the way here, and missed the sea, the sunset, any interaction with Malagasy outside the tired and grumpy staff. I wish I had the money or time to do it again, and do it right.

We enjoyed our stay here. Nice and clean, hot shower and cute bungalow. The food was really nice and the personal friendly but distant. To be so close to the beach and to the rest of ramena beach was a joy. We encurage people to stay here.
