The gardens surrounding the hotel were stunningly beautiful, serene! The private onsen (hot spring bath) was amazing and the traditional style rooms were really cool. The customer service was excellent too. They spoke some English but had a translating device for the more complicated questions. Shower water pressure was great- complimentary soaps and bathroom amenities provided. They happily arranged taxi service for us and were always available for assistance.
Only complaints are the room smelled very fishy and the sleeping mats & pillows were uncomfortable. Also, don’t eat at the restaurant unless you like fish / seafood. It was delicious but very fishy!

My husband and I stayed here for two nights as part of a two-week honeymoon trip. The area is a little difficult to reach in comparison to other onset resorts (about 35-40 mins by public bus from Fukushima station) but the remoteness is part of the charm. There is a free shuttle bus to and from the ryokan at set times and you have to pre-book hence why we had to take the public bus initially. It was relaxing to be able to try all the differnt baths, have a walk in town during the day and sample the local cuisine. They have a huge buffet for breakfast and even the most basic dinner package was a carefully curated omakase menu. There did not seem to be very many foreign guests at this ryokan or in the town of Tsuchiyu Onsen more generally but I would highly recommend it as a slice of Japan that is not currently overrun by foreign tourism.

Cold air on my face, body warmed by hot spring waters, sights and sounds of waterfalls and mountainous landscape put me in Onsen heaven. Great place to relax and reconnect with nature. Free shuttle bus pick up (2 pm) and drop off (10 am) from/to Fukushima Station. Be sure to make a reservation for the shuttle. Getting out the west exit of Fukushima exit, go all the way right, past the taxis and buses. The bus is a white minibus with their logo (all Japanese characters) so try to remember what it looks like if you don't read Japanese. Meals are eaten in a huge room with a buffet breakfast and kaiseki-type dinner. We reserved a private Onsen on the 8th floor but I would not recommend that one. No place to shower/bathe and difficult to get to. But there are many more onsens to try, I wish we had more time to try them all.

takes just 2 hours door to door from central Tokyo by train plus FOC hotel shuttle from Fukushima station. Excellent value for money. Some staff understands basic English, so communicatiign the essentilas is no big deal. They have documentation in English, about the different onsen baths, and which gender they are dedicated to during what times. The small rotenburo with riverview was amazing. Western food items for breakfast included homemade yoghurt, fresh smoothies, great croissants, broche roolls. Booking based on halfboard highly recommended! Not much choice to dine out in town anyway, except for neighbouring hotels.

We stayed at Sansuiso for two nights in July 2014 and would highly recommend this ryokan. There are many baths (including some that allow mixed bathing at certain times), some with wonderful views over the waterfall - while the ryokan was very busy during our stay, the baths never felt too crowded. The food (breakfast and dinner) was really excellent and they were happy to accommodate a pescatarian. Service was also great - the lady who looked after us during our stay was incredibly kind and couldn't do enough to help. The ryokan had a 90s charm, which added to the experience.

The onsen town itself is a good size with lots of public foot baths and some charming little shops. We enjoyed some particularly good dorayaki from Nakaya - the manju shop - located close by to Sansuiso (by the closest foot bath).

Everyone we met in the onsen town was incredibly friendly and we would encourage everyone to visit and support this beautiful area!

Stayed there during our Tohoku trip;
The place itself is around Tsuchiyu onsen in Fukushima city and is just amazingly beautiful itself.

The hotel started to impress from the very beginning. We did not even manage get out of the cars as helpful staff started helping us with bags.
Very warm and welcoming entrance with traditional Tsuchiyu kokeshi dolls and samurai armour, the whole first impression is quite old but very classy ryokan.
Rooms are spacious in the best traditions of Japanese style, containing good yukata's and winter coats so that we never felt cold.

The main thing of any ryokan is of course hot spring.
This is another amazing thing about this hotel - lots and lots of baths; all kinds of them, all kinds of temperatures and views. One outside with look on a waterfall and cypress forest was simply impressive. I was sitting there for long time looking into the wintery night sky and lit-up waterfall.

We also tried out the pool which was free of charge. The pool room itself was not as tidy as the hotel is but it was completely empty and pool used hot springs water which resulted in very warm and pleasant swimming for fun.

The food is another story.
Dinner was in the separate room with girl sitting next to us and helping refilling glasses and rice. Everything starting from sashimi and till the last piece of tsukemono was first class.
The breakfast was just as good as dinner was. Accompanied with a stunning view into japanese garden covered with light snow, perfect food and wide choice of all kinds of European, Japanese and so-called Continental breakfast choices.

The final point is the price. It is just unbelievable for this service. The problem is with people who do not come there just because the prefecture is Fukushima, although the place itself - Tsuchiyu onsen and around is clean from any pollution.

I really want more people to visit Fukushima, which is no doubt one of the most beautiful places of Japan. It is worth visiting and people in Fukushima want your visit more than any time before.

We visited Sansuiso in December 2022 in the snowy weather. Four of us stayed in a suite room with private bath in Shisuitei, the new wing. The room was spacious, clean, and very comfortable with a bedroom section (with 2 ample sized western beds) that can be separated with sliding doors at night, as well as a very big tatami room where two more people can sleep on futons. The heating system was top notch with precise control, and I should mention the toilet was equipped with top-of-the-line TOTO washlet bidet with automated lid and flushing.

I have multiple food allergies, including gluten (celiac disease), and my husband cannot eat eggs or dairy products. When I explained this to them when I made the reservation, they readily accommodated us, and I was thrilled that they didn’t simply skip some things, but carefully prepared special course menus to match our needs. Since my mother was going through chemotherapy, we had a private room for dinner and breakfast (plus we could add whatever we wanted from the breakfast buffet to the prepared meal). Both my mom and her friend said they felt like they had been treated to a fine restaurant for each meal.

It was our first time to stay in Tsuchiyu Onsen; we stayed there for two nights when it was snowing heavily due to a big cold wave. When my mom wanted to go shrimp fishing or my husband wanted to paint kokeshi dolls, the kind okami-san (innkeeper) tactfully allowed us to take the shuttle bus to the venue and the bus came to pick us up on the way back to the inn. Bathing with a view of the snowy slope and waterfall was also wonderful. The shuttle bus from right in front of the Fukushima station is convenient, too. If an opportunity presented itself, we would love to visit Sansuiso again.

We had spent time in Tokyo prior to coming to Sansuiso and this town and this hotel was a lovely escape from the busy cities. We visited in winter and the snowy views from our room and the baths were breathtaking. We also accidentally left behind a small painting in our rooms when we checked out. The hotel staff went above and beyond to get it back to us. Outstanding hospitality. I would definitely come back again.

Overall rating is a 3, mainly due to their great staff and hospitality. But there's just too much for the hotel to do to up their ratings. Here's some of the good and bad:

The Good.
1. Quiet location to relax.
2. Very fast WiFi, and it's free.
3. Extremely good staff, makes you feel like King for the day.
4. Big rooms.
5. Everything works.

The Bad.
1. The entire hotel smells old, and moldy.
2. The entire carpet is old and moldy.
3. The wall paper is old and peeling.
4. The hot spring is simple and boring, 3 pools.
5. The WiFi is not secured.
6. The food taste average at best.

This was the second hotel we visited on our trip through Japan. Originally we had only planned to stay here one night, but after being here we cancelled our next hotel and booked an extra day. It was absolutely beautiful. The setting, the little town surrounding it, the snow on the hills, and the fact that we were one of only three groups of people staying there. We went in off-season, you see, so we pretty much had the run of the hotel.
Admittedly it was a little "Shining" esq, walking to our private bath in the evening through a wing of the hotel that wasn't lit up. Personally that just made it more awesome for me, though it did unnerve my husband a little.

The baths are incredibly wonderful. While we stayed, we had a private bath all to ourselves and we each visited one of the gendered baths. The private bath we visited is out on a little wooden balcony, and has a large round wooden tub. He went to one of the men's baths on the first floor, while I went to the outdoor bath with the round tub and the rockpool that you see in many of the hotel's photos.

Our room was lovely, to say the least. Most hotel rooms in Japan are small by nature, so this one was like a suite comparatively. It had a little living room sitting area, with a mini bar and proper glasses for water. (SIDE NOTE: the tap water is not drinkable here, so you've got to be able to call down and ask for more water.) It had a shower, with a deep tub and a separate room for the toilet. Our bedroom was up some steps behind a rice paper door with a beautiful view out the window and a lovely little table and tea set.

Everything about this place was absolutely lovely, and the next time we go to Japan we will absolutely have to stay here again.
