We booked 3 months in advance because there’s only 7 units in the whole hotel and they sell out quickly. One has to plan to be extravagant to have considered this hotel and I was. I was not disappointed.

Ando San picked a secluded spot for this piece of work. We heard it was meant to be his personal vacation home so it all made sense. It’s right above a golf course mid mountain so you know you will get a great view. We were glad it wasn’t a tourist attraction compared with the Benesse house we visited on this trip.

 The service
Immaculate. Absolute epitome of Japanese customer service one can expect from this price range and reputation.

 The accommodation
I can see how it can be orgasmic for Tadao Ando’s fan. I didn’t know about his work until this trip and I have to say I’m impressed and interested to find out more.

 The meals
Top notch keiseki but I must say I had better in a much less extravagant place. Try focus on who the architect who built this hotel is and you will give that concession. At least I did.

Overall, a very pleasant stay and I look forward to trying out the oval when I talk myself into taking a more sociable holiday.

If you are an architecture buff, you'll know Tadao Ando, who designed the building in 1997. Originally built as museum, it reopened as hotel in 2015. While mainly consisting of concrete and open space - which I adore -, the pure luxury is the remote location paired with only seven guest rooms. Even when fully booked, it always - imagine, a museum! - feels very private, not to say empty. There is a choice of "counter style" or classical seating for dinner. It's Kaiseki (Japanese multi-course tasting menu), but certain food preferences were taken care of with advance notice. A lounge is at your disposal, offering coffee, juice and some bubbles on the house. While we were very satisfied, it falls short certain things to reach a full 5 points rating, considering the price tag (which settles you in the best 5* hotel in any major city worldwide): - the lack of a full bar (after dinner drink menu is rather limited and at 23h the place shuts down) - latest dinner option is 1930h (would be nice to have it extended) - during our stay they hosted a small concert. To our surprise, it was during dinner time, so guests with prebooked dinner could not attend, as the schedule was not flexible. Pity. - missing a light breakfast option (after a 8 course meal in the evening, it's difficult to start with another 8 course breakfast into the day, at least for me) That said, if you enjoy architecture combined with relaxing surroundings and Japanese high class hospitality, you will be satisfied.

Very nice art hotel, designed by the master Ando. Beautiful suites and a wonderful view on the islands. The pool is a monocular on the ocean. The staff is outstanding. A pitty you have to pay extra for using the inner pool and sauna . The price for a room is already high. There are only 7 rooms, and I wonder how they can survive , for sure if you can estimate the cost of the building. In fact, the building was first a gallery or museum, build by a ceo of a paper industry.

A must visit for fans of Tadao Ando’s architecture. We booked the Aonagi suite on the top floor of the main building and it did not disappoint - a large space with double height ceilings, a great view of the stunning swimming pool and the inland sea in the distance. It’s full of natural light in the day and atmospheric at night. Other plus points: 1. Good sound system 2. iPad for your use 3. Lots of closet space 4. Beautifully made indigo denim pyjamas 5. Chilled cava on arrival 6. Neat little alcove with study table if you need to focus on your laptop and not the stunning view in the main room 7. Comfortable beds 8. Underfloor heating if you need it 9. Spacious and well appointed bathroom (Appa Kappa toiletries) Have a wander around the hotel as there are lots of quiet contemplative spaces to appreciate. It almost feels like you have the whole place to yourself. The food at the restaurant was of very high quality - delicious Japanese omakase meals prepared with local ingredients. We had dinner with a wonderful sake. Breakfast was also great - delicious and substantial. For dinner, there is a western food option but really, why would you travel not to experience a beautifully prepared traditional Japanese meal? It was too cold for a swim on our visit. The indoor pool (you have to book an hour’s slot to use) was a little disappointing. The dark cave like space looked better in pictures - didn’t like the damp floors and high humidity level in there. Service was friendly and prompt throughout our stay.
