Stayed one night with Japanese cuisine at the room. One minute walk from the Dogo-Onsen Main Facility, and enjoyed walking there in Yukata. Dinner was excellent, and very well served by a waitress in Kimono. Every piece had delicacy and excellence. A historic hotel admired by many novelists and haiku poets, with classic flavors in every corner including the garden.

The room was huge and typically Japanese, the staff made us feel like royalty. Restaurant was delicious, the garden is magical. They give you kimonos to wear to dinner while they prepare your bed in the room on the floor. The ultimate Japanese experience. A dream.

Good location with free parking. Not more than 5 mins. walk to the shopping arcade and historical Dogo public bath. Nice Japanese garden, spacious room. Nice environment of the public bath. Yet, there is strange smell of the wood. The standard of breakfast is just acceptable.

We recently spent a couple of nights here, fresh of the plane from Australia. The service was fantastic. We were able to check in early, and because was raining upon checkout the concierge dropped us at the train station. The location was great (easy walking distance to many points of interest), and there's a bus from the airport to the... More

We stayed in this Hotel three years ago, and returned this time, for the impression at that time was good. There were two floors as designated as a non-smoking floor. I think that in all other rooms, smoking is allowed. If you want to avoid the adverse effect of smoking, you should select a room on the 6th and 7th... More

If you can afford to stay here, Funaya will definitely deliver on the traditional ryokan experience for you. A lot of other reviewers say that this place is old/aging, however it does not purport to be a hotel - it is a ryokan, so you won't have the modern getup and same experience as your Park Hyatt or whatever. Having... More

We booked a night at Funaya to enjoy a bath in famous Dogo Onsen (really crowded) but we ended up having our onsen in the hotel itself, more private and really lovely and relaxing. The ryokan is perfectly located to walk around in Dogo Onsen and has its own onsen (indoor and outdoor), as well as a tiny nice japanese... More

We had a large room with twin beds and a large living/tatami area and a balcony. The room overlooked a landscape garden and was quiet. However, the furniture in the room was a bit old fashioned. The bath room was clean but a bit small. The wifi connection inside the room was very weak. Fortunately we had brought our own... More

This famous Ryokan has been around for 200 years and is showing now some wear and tear more of which later. We had a combination of Japanese and Western style room meaning there were two beds (big) but there was also a tatami room with Tokonoma. Nice touch. Not so nice was that both the desk chair and the tatami... More

We chose to stay at Funaya mainly due to its location. It is only 5 minutes away from the Dogo Onsen area, which is one of the key tourist attractions in Matsuyama. While the hotel is quite dated, it was in decent shape and clean. Our room was incredibly spacious (especially when compared to our cramped night staying in Kochi),... More
