Detailed Reviews
Beppu is well known for its natural hot springs and the many resorts that live of the Japanese love for ‘onsen’. A drawback for many of these resorts is that the common bath is separate for men and women. As a western couple you end up sitting alone in the hot bath, surrounded by friendly Japanese with whom you cannot easily have a conversation with.
The Terrace Midoubaru Hotel has private baths adjacent to the room. So we enjoyed the hot mineral water together in the privacy of our room while enjoying the view over the bay. The bath has sliding doors that allow you to bath semi-outdoors.
The hotel is a pleasant boutique hotel with friendly and personal service.
It is recommended to stay for dinner because the hotel is a bit remote from other places to eat. The dinner and breakfast were excellent and of course very Japanese!
Both dinner and breakfast is a set menu, there is no a la carte option. If you do not like Japanese food too much, do not book this place!
The hotel is located up in the hills and you should get there by taxi. From the railway station, this will set you back some 1700 -2000 yen. Same thing to get back!

My wife & I chose this hotel for our visit to Beppu after favourable reviews by most travellers. The reviews were spot on, and we love its location on a hill top, its privacy, ryokan with a modern touch and the in-room onsen.
I want to commend the staff for the excellent service rendered during, and after the stay. I had forgetfully left a jumper in the closet during check-out, and by the time they informed us we were already in Fukuoka ready to fly home the next morning. They took the trouble to pack the jumper into a small box and sent by courier back to my home. Excellent service!

We check in at Terrace Midoubaru Beppu on 2 April 2018 after lunch and were impressive with the hotel view & room with private onsen. Our room 303 located on ground level and we had a hot bath and took a nap before dinner at 6pm. However, we were woke up immediately in less than 30mins becoz the upper level above us guests check in. We could hear them busy walking and unpacked their luggages. The foot step was really noisy. We were so disturb by the noise and went to complain and requested to change room. Staff said no room available and he will inform guest above us. However, it didn't improve and noise continued 11pm. We didn't have good sleep because noise started early next morning. Hotel didn't handle it well and I don't totally blame the guest above us but instead, hotel should improve room sound proof insulation. Honestly, I didn't pay that much to get extra noise. If u want a good sleep, pls take upper level. Besides, hotel claims do not accept children under 10 years old but there was 5-6 yrs old child crying during dinner. Hotel should be strict with their policy because as a guest, we choose no child policy and pay the extra for it.
Very disappointed 😔

What a great and unique place this hotel is .
Fantastic location , great views , and private onsen.
All team was very polite with a very good level of English .
The bus stops to Beppu station is at 10 minutes walk and it costs around ¥280.
The design of the site was absolutely unique, modern but at the same time Japanese style.
My only reason to not give 5 stars is value for money, I do reckon is slightly expensive for what it offers: walls a very thin , we could hear everything , it can be an issue for light sleeper, a few damaged furniture in the room, and a few spots that required a better cleaning.

We stayed at the ryokan for two nights. It’s absolutely the best decision we’ve made.
While some people commented that it’s very difficult to locate, the hotel kindly reminder us the map code a few days before we arrived and we had no issue locating the hotel on the day we checked in.
The food was awesome. They deliberately made a different breakfast menu on our second day. That’s very kind and thoughtful of them. The dinner was very good too. I stayed at other more expensive Onsen ryokan in Kyūshū and the food was not as good as I expected. On the contrary, the food here was really delicious! We regretted not ordering dinner in the hotel for our first night (due to bad experience elsewhere).
The bed, while a mixed Japanese / western style bed, was super comfortable and I had such great sleep during the stay. The room was modernly designed with a traditional Japanese touch. Overall it’s very cozy and modern at the same time. You can find electric sockets in places you would expect - eg near your bed. There were a couple of little insects in our room (probably entered when we opened the main door), but that’s expected in rural area like this. The view from our room was beautiful too. We do agree with the paper thin wall comments by other visitors. We could hear people chatting next door but this wasn’t a huge minus for us. We stayed on the ground floor and fortunately we were not disturbed by any noise upstairs, unlike what other travellers commented. Staying on the ground floor also means you can skip the steps walking up to the first floor. We think we made the right choice overall :)
Needless to say the private Onsen was superb. It’s indoor which means that we could still enjoy the Onsen while it rained heavily on the day of arrival. The public Onsen was like 2-3x the private Onsen. There is nothing attractive in the public Onsen. Facilities wise that’s not as good as some other Onsen ryokan (eg I couldn’t see any locker), but I don’t think it’s a big issue. I would prefer enjoying my in room Onsen anyway.
The staff here all speak good English so there is no issue with communication.
The hotel has a vending machine and there is no markup on price. Another good point to mention.
I can find no flaws in this ryokan. I love this hotel so much and would love to visit again. We will definitely recommend friends and family to visit this ryokan if they want to visit beppu in the future.

Lovely modern ryokan with private onsen in room. Very clean rooms. Very comfortable futon.
Full-on amazing Japanese breakfast and evening kaiseki served daily - they made extra effort to ensure no repeats. Food was exquisite and fresh local produce.
Staff were v nice ...had limited English but made the extra effort to really help... we conversed using google translate : )
We arrived from Fukuoka on train then taxi up to the ryokan... 10 min or so ...some taxi didnt know the address so stand-by with the ryokan telephone.
Went into picturesque Yuifin a few times by bus... theres a bus stop about 10 mins walk down the mountain... journey took about 30 mins.
Only one slight complaint .... the floors are very thin above ...we had non-Japanese neighbours above who were noisy, heavy footed and rather inconsiderate running around til past 1am...we asked to change rooms... even tho they were full house... they made extra effort to re arrange a room on the second floor. So if you can request go for a room above. Theres only two floors.
Would def recommend.

We were here to celebrate our anniversary. The staff assisted to make a special decoration on the bed and presented us a framed photo of our dining experience.
Room is spacious and modern.
Lovely food and environment. We especially enjoy the hot spring inside the room which is but enough to accommodate 2 adults.

My wife and I have just spent 2 nights at this exclusive hotel which is placed in a strategic spot overlooking the whole city of Beppu. The views from the the top of the hill was absolutely stunning. It was so exclusive that satellite navigation may not take you there with your first 2 attempts. There was only a small path with traffic both ways taking you to the hotel. There was a crazy junction that you either make a hairpin turn that any car could not make with one manoeuvre. Other than that, the food on offer at the hotel restaurant was among the best that I have tried in Kyushu. I could show you some views f my room which was breath taking. There is hot spring bath in the bedroom as well as public ones in the common area of the hotel. The staff is very friendly and helpful. It is a great place to stay if you self drive. It is about 15-20 minutes’ drive from seven famous hotspings including the Devil Hot Springs and Africa Safari which are the 2 best local attractions. Highly tecommended and you won’t regret it

Last Minute Trip to Yufuin but can't find a decent hotel or you ought to be pay outrages price. Then we decided to give Terrace Midobaru a try and we were very satisfied. only 20 minutes plus driving from Yufuin we found this hidden gem on top of the slope over-viewing Beppu. The room was excellent and you can't complaint about the semi open air onsen. Dinner was lovely and well executed.
