This traditional Japanese inn is located in the Kannawa hells area of Beppu. Kannawa, in common with most of Beppu, is utterly tacky (but great fun) being based around a series of hot spots (or hells) which have been turned into mini amusement parks (see the accompanying photo of a devil astride a steaming vent).

The inn itself is on the hillside next to all this razmataz, physically just yards away but infact feeling like its a world away. We stayed in a cabin located in the gardens away from the main building. The cabin provided pleasant, traditional Japanese accomodation (straw mat floors, bedding rolled out in the evening etc) and included a superb private onsen (hot spring bath). The onsen was constantly topped up by volcanically heated water and looked out over the patio and gardens (with shrubbery sufficient to avoid giving vistors to adjoining hot spots a hellish experience they hadn't bargained on).

The public onsen are secluded and not at all busy when...

Live like royal family without the luxury, I can only afford to spend one day at Kannawaen due to tight itinerary and cost, but it worth all the money. As a tourist, I prefer a small traditional Japanese inn like Kannawaen than large luxury hotels, believing that if I want theme park type resort, I don;'t have to travel that far to Beppu. English is a big problem here, but the super services backed by body languages of staffs are part of fun travelling in a foreign country. The only disappointed is I have to be separated with my wife while using the hot springs, though we were the only two guests in the whole inn at that morning. A walk on trail up hill behind Kannawaen is highly recommended.
