we arrived on a rather rainy afternoon in Nara and the staff at Ryokan Matsumae kindly lent us umbrellas so we could continue to explore Nara's charming back streets. The room was traditional and very simple, but also very comfortable. We had a sound nights sleep listening to the rain outside and we're delighted with the traditional Japanese breakfast that...

I stayed in this ryokan for one night in October 2016. The hotel is in a very good location which is not far from Kintetsu Nara Station and is near other tourist attractions: Naramachi, Deer Park, Nara Museum and Toudaiji. The atmosphere are very homey, although rooms and facilities are a little bit old. All rooms are Japanese style (with...

Loved how the ryokan is tucked in the back streets of Nara - world heritage area - next to lovely little shops, cute houses and yummy restaurants. It is also conveniently located at a walking distance from the park and the main street. Our host was the loveliest woman, who speaks good English and was extremely helpful. The room was...

I recommend this hotel. It is cheap, service is great and staff are really REALLY nice and helpful. The lady who is there is an expert of calligraphy and her work is just beautiful. We used their public bath and everything is really clean. We didn't take our breakfast there so I wouldn't know how it is. no negative side.

Stayed one night in a tatami room with toilet but no bath. Room was clean. I think we were reasonably demanding customer with 2 small children, but the staff always answered our request and question with a smile and care. Okami (landlady) was especially helpful. We had very nice Japanese style breakfast which was prepared with care. This Ryokan is...

I stayed in 4 different ryokans throughout my fortnight trip in Japan, and this is by far the best I've stayed! in! I arrived on a rainy afternoon with my luggage, and left the luggage there (like all the hotels in Japan) before check-in time and started touring Nara. The hostess there gave me a map during check-in and recommended...

We stayed 3 nights at the start of June. Service was the highlight, being very friendly and helpful. We had a traditional tatami room with no en-suite (i.e. no shower or bath, but there was a toilet and sink). Using the on-site spa/onsen was not a problem, and actually an enjoyable experience. Nicely situated close to the tourist-y parts of...

“- use ear plugs - you will get a better sleep, walls are thin; - check curfew hours in advance, and notify when you arrive - this is not some Hilton or Hyatt; - order Japanese meal - it will be much better than Western; - ask staff NICELY to help lift your suitcase to your room and back.”
