This property is not your standard hotel experience, it's a character filled home with a very interesting and friendly owner, who goes out of her way to make you feel welcome. Rooms are a bit tired, considering the property is 85+ years old that can be expected. The Japanese breakfast on the first day was outstanding. Get involved in local...

The place is fine for just sleeping and within walking distance of all the attractions. However , it is not very clean and expensive for what it offers. The lady who owns the place speaks little English, but is very friendly and helpful. She offered to do our laundry which was appreciated.

owner stays on ground floor. very friendly lady. the room is small - not for more than 2. felt crammy. owner did offer another small room for 1 on ground floor. however, as family with small kid, we thought it was better staying together. the ryokan had seen better days and coukd do with a bit of sprucing up.

I stayed here for 2 nights and must say the thing that makes this ryokan better than any other is the lovely host that is Noriko. She is hospitable, charming and very welcoming into her home that she loves and has looked after for years. If you're looking for something modern and new, then this wouldn't be the place for...

We recovered from a negative first impression of this inn to enjoy our stay here and would recommend it to others. I wouldn't feel right giving this inn an excellent rating given that the condition of the place and the quality of the furnishings etc is not up to the standard one would expect of accommodation in this price range....

It is difficult to write this review because the owner is so lovely. The ryokan is a bit rundown and not worth $202/night. The location is great and the beds comfortable. At around $100/night it would be terrific

Our family of five stayed for two nights at Ryokan Tsubakiso. It was the highlight of our Japan trip. We arrived from east and west and were greeted by Noriko, who poured tea while we caught up as we relaxed on the tatami mats of the spacious family room. We occupied three rooms of this charming inn, two in the...

We stayed for two nights and were impressed with the hospitality and spectacular Japanese breakfast. Noriko was so welcoming that we felt like we were staying at a relative's house. She even did all our laundry, which was a lot more than we thought we might get. Yukata kimonos were available for all of us, including our 9 year old....

This place honestly has a bit further from the center of action than I’d anticipated, and a bit more resource-intensive than I had hoped for a ryokan, but if you’re willing to just take that in stride and jump in with two feet, it’s a fantastic experience. I don’t think we could have asked for a more authentic, enjoyable ryokan...

I went to Nara, travelling alone, for a few days and hadn't booked in advance. As luck would have it, Ryókan Tsubakiso was available and I couldn't have been happier. Noriko was super hospitable and the accommodation was great for the price. I highly recommend it!
