Boy were we glad it was only a one night stay! The place being old isn't the problem. It can be old but clean. Unfortunately this isn't. You are greeted by an awful smell at the entrance, not sure what from, perhaps from the poor dog chained to his tiny rotten kennel. The room is dirty, with thick layers of...

The buildings are run down. It is located on a forest road with an uneven set of stairs up from the road. The owners have an old dog living on the front entry deck and when we arrived the stench of urine drying on the deck was disgusting. I should have read the reviews of others before booking.

At first when we arrived we were worry, the entrance is smelly and it's quiet lost in the middle of the forest but it ended up to be a great experience. The host is a cute Japanese grand mother, she is so nice and speak English good enough. The traditional Japanese room has a bathroom and toilet, it's clean and...

Freezing cold (paraffin heater in room - a safe, modern one but smelly all the same). Cleanliness not a strong point - apart from the Japanese hot bath - all a bit run down really. Taxi driver raised his eyebrows when we said where we were going. Just not worth the money to be honest.

As previous reviewers have said, this hotel could do with a spring clean and some redecoration, but it was clean where it matters and the lady running it when we were there could not have been more attentive or helpful. We didn't eat there, but the visitors' book in our room was uniformly complimentary about the food. There was snow...

It's called a "pension." But that's besides the point. Cleanliness is not a strong point of this little place, and it ain't the fault of the dog. It had been, shall we politely say, quite a while since it was last cleaned, which must have been in Showa, or perhaps Taisho. Maybe Meiji. Our room had a bathroom which was...

Picked up by the owners from Nikko JR station after making the agreed phone call from the call box as per the email. Having travelled direct from the UK the JR rail connections and pick up from the station worked fine. The residence is placed about half a mile from the town and given that a trip to Nikko's temples...

Very good place to stay in Nikko, and very charming owners of the hotel. It's a bit away from the town, but I think Nikko as a town has not many things to offer, so you don't really need to be near the town. In exchange, you get a nice, 8-tatami traditional japanese room in an extraordinary environment and with...

We booked this inn based on positive reviews on a travel site, by which we were misled. For this price, we didn't expext anything fancy but a basic clean accommodation. After climbing up steep stairs, a handsome beagle, Charley welcomed us. My dog-lover friends would've petted him, if he had received a little more TLC with deodorant. The couple running...

The hosts are extremely helpful, friendly and cute. They picked us up from the station and drove us back again and gave us all different kind of infos what to do (especially as it was raining, that was useful). Even though we left one day earlier than planned they were very friendly We liked the dinner a lot. It was...
