It was very difficult for us to find this hotel after we departed from our train ride from Tokyo. We tried to speak with a grocery store clerk but it became too frustrating. So we took a taxi cab and withing 5 minutes ride, we arrived at this unique hotel. As things turned out, this hotel had the most spacious and comfortable lodging we had experienced during our 6 day stay in Japan. But unfortunately they had no food available! When we woke the next morning, we were amazed to look from our hotel balcony down to an incredible river gorge with bridges and colorful trees. We actually found this hotel by accident as we originally planned to travel more in Nikko.

You literally get 2 rooms: living room and bedroom, toilette is separate from the shower which is very convinient for 2 ppl. Fresh air and river noise grants a perfekt sleep. From the station it is the first building and you enter already on the 5th floor, as the hotel goes down the river bank. It only says kaze hotel's on the side of the house, so easy to get confused. You are supposed to change to the sleepers in the entrance and take your own shoes with you, before reaching the reception. By the reception you can borrow a yukata of preferred size. In the area by the reception one can enjoy a massage chair, there are many of them and wifi is open network, no password, bu you can only use it in the lobby. Closest shops for food are 7/11 30 min on foot straight ahead to kinugawa onsen stop. Or Lawson (the same direction) bu you need to cross the river by bridge first. Shampoo, hair conditioner and toothpaste /brush are provided in the room. Definitely will be back!!!

So my daughter loves Stephen King books (the Shining) So after reading other reviews of this hotel referring to it being a bit creepy, we booked for a bit of adventure. Pros the hotel is spacious and very traditional. Beautiful views over the river gauge and the constant white noise of a raging river below. Ladies onsen had 3 baths 2 inside 1 outside. The lounge has massage chairs looking out over the gauge and a karaoke machine. The foyer has a range of vending machines including one for icecreams. There is a suspension bridge 3 minutes walk away that takes you to the other side of the gauge. Cons- it will take approx 40 minutes to get to Nikko and the trains do not run frequently. Check the time table to plan your return journey to minimise long waits on the station. Food is limited and must be ordered the day prior. Highly recommended for travellers with family and those who are not rushed.

Stayed here on a Sunday evening with family. The layout of the standard rooms we stayed in (504 and 505) was of the typical ryokan configuration. The location is also quite convenient being right across the Kinugawakoen train station. With all taxes and fees included, the rate came to be less than 6000 yen per room. The option with breakfast included was double that price, so we stocked up at 7-11 near Kinugawa Onsen Station and passed on the hotel-provied breakfast. The on-site onsen is rather old, and the open-air bath is quite small. However, the view from the open-air bath can't be beat. There are mountains all around and the gentle but imposing Kinu River flows silently at the bottom of the canyon. The relaxation room (also on the 5th floor) is equipped with many massage chairs that are free to use and provides the same majestic downstream view (towards Kinugawa Onsen Station) as the open-air bath does. The free wifi was fine in the lobby but not reliable in the rooms. However, at the price point I got, I was completely satisfied with the product and would strongly recommend this property.

I arrived at the hotel very dark under the stormy night. It was a bit scary but front desk staff was very nice to welcome me. The onsen was quite old facilities but nice water, good quality as known well for all. As long as the onsen water is great, I do not care about the facilities. JR station : Kinugawa koen.
