The great service starts before you enter with a doorman waiting to greet you. This service ended up being the norm with extremely polite and attentive wait staff showing you rooms and preparing your meals, though be aware that most speak only Japanese. The food was delicious

The place is in a quiet location, a bit remote from the main road. Traditional hotel with very nice service and excellent food. A visit to the onsen is a must. Walking distance from Nikko main site. I warmly recommend this hotel.

In Japan you can choose in having smoking rooms or not, when you book your room you have that choice. When I was in that Ryokan I chose for a non-smoking room so I can't answer you question about the smell, the rooms were very clean and neat though.

I think it doesn't... You can ask to a member of the staff though, might be they would help you. Japanese people are really kind and always willing to help.

"Its was booked through my daughter at a Japanese website. Not sure how it will be but the one facing the river will be nice"
"Suggest asking for a room at the back overlooking the stream and with a view of the hills/mountains"
