As much as I'd like to say we enjoyed this - it does have a lot going for it - the truth is we stayed a night then left. It was just too traditional for us - if traditional can be considered to mean a place built some time on the 60s or 70s and neither renovated nor seemingly even...

There are not many ryokans that specifically cater for vegetarians - this is a major plus point at Hoeiso. Great food! There is also a beautiful natural pool sited by the river, where you can reserve a private one hour slot as part of room fee.

Hoeiso would be a good choice for those who (like us) would like to experience the traditional ryokan and the famed Japanese gentility. We were in the new(er) wing which was in itself quite dated. The room had an anteroom, a toilet room, a shower and private onsen (unnecessary as the public baths and the open air baths were great),...

The staff, service, calm location in the mountains, nature, back yard, Kaiseki meal (every day different meals, very japanese), onsen, ryokan style, view from the room, is just in the top. There is a small grocery shop a walk distance from hotel. Some disadvantages: cold in the bathroom/toilet, no wi-fi in the room, small repairs needed (some stains on the...

We stayed at Kijitei Hoeisi one night in April, a 10-min bus ride from Hakone-yumoto station. This seems to be a more foreigner friendly ryokan as there were quite a few foreign guests and English speaking staff. There is nothing nearby to explore. The ryokan looks and feels quite old. The rooms are spacious but a little dreary with modern...

This place is beautiful. The staff is your typical Japanese uber-polite, service-oriented team. They seem so pleased to be welcoming you into their 'home' and helping you have a perfect stay. The room is made up of three main areas - the dining/living area, the sleeping area and a semi-outdoor area. All of it spotlessly clean. You're served breakfast and...

Maybe not in the best location of Hakone (bus K every 30mins), the experience of this ryokan was incredible, the building is not new but kept all its charm. Food was amazing, a lot of explanations in japanese - only few words in english - which made the experience more unique. The big advantage is you can book the outdoor...

Poor English, no wifi in the room, very old facility. We stayed only for one night, but the experiences have been kind of poor. The only highlight is the private out-door bath, which was very cool and relaxing.

We partner and I only stayed here for one night but it was very relaxing and enjoyable. The food is good, beautifully prepared. The onsens are clean and beautiful. Was nice to be able to book the outdoor onsen for private use, good for couples and families. The staff don't speak English that well but it wasn't an issue, they...

I've booked the room via booking.com for one night last November for my mothers birthday trip. This hotel is whatever you would have seen on the telly about traditional Japanese ryokan! We got room 321 which gives you lovely view of the mountain behind, and you have the elevator that goes straight down to the onsens :) I have looked...
