Staying at a ryokan is a great way to immerse yourself into Japanese life (or a least a very cultivated version of it) and we scheduled our stay at Madokano Mori at an early stage in our latest trip to Japan. The Madokano Mori delivered as a quintessentially Japanese experience and also as a very luxurious base from which to enjoy Hakone. Our room was quite magnificent and we made amble use of our private onsen on the balcony. Breakfast and dinner was served in-room by a charming member of hotel staff. The food was very good but didn’t quite match some of the stellar meals that I have enjoyed in other ryokan. The Madokano Mori has fairly decent public transport links, which is particularly useful for those with an Hakone Free Pass. We walked to and from Sounzan ropeway station, from which you can take a cable car over the collapsed volcano and onwards to the lake. Do use the baggage drop off/collection service from Hakone-Yumoto station, if that is the start/end point for your trip to Hakone. This allows you to get on with your day without having to firstly (or lastly) go to your hotel to drop off/collect your luggage. There is very little incentive to leave Madokano Mori in the evening (non-residents tend to come to it, if anything) and accordingly it was nice to have a decent bar on hand to refresh oneself in the evening. I found a few drafts of sake to be a very nice prelude to a dip in the outside onsen in the evening. For us, staying at Madokano Mori was something of an extravagance, but after two luxurious days and nights it felt like money well spent.

From the moment you walk in, the attendants help you out of your shoes, bring tea, and let you relax. After checking in, we were escorted to our room with explanation of everything. We soaked in the onsen on the balcony which was hot, though it was cold and raining outside. And then changed and headed downstairs to a private dining space for dinner. Dinner was a 2-hour ceremony of 10 courses. Each course is stunning - from the chef's expert technique to the beautiful artistry of the plateware. Many of the ingredients we were unfamiliar with, but gave it a try. The breakfast in the morning was similar (but much shorter with less dishes.) We left both meals stuffed, which was fine as we wore our traditional garments provided which were very roomy :) My husband and I stayed for just one night, which in my opinion, was perfect. The place definitely took some work to get to from Tokyo, but completely worth it. Also, it was our first time in a ryokan, so while relaxing, at times we were unsure of what to do and the staff was very kind. If you're looking for a unique overnight stay that is both traditional and luxurious - this will not disappoint.

From the moment you arrive, you will feel like royalty! This hotel seems expensive, but it is soooo worth it. Perfect greeting on arrival, relaxing check in seated in the lobby, escort to the room. Includes the most extravagant in-room Kaiseki Dinner and breakfast. Our attendant, Asako was wonderful! The hot spring spa on the patio was convenient. The whole stay was peaceful and luxurious. Highlight of our 2 week trip in Japan!

We came here after the typhoon. Arriving a bit anxious. We arrived easily with train to Odawara and then by bus. The bus was not well sign posted in English so do research beforehand. A simpler way would be to go by train to Yomoto and then bus to Gora station. Finally arriving at the hotel was like arriving into peace and tranquillity. The decor is exquisite and calming. The room was huge and very relaxing. Including sofas and beds not always to get in a ryokan. Everything was well designed and new. Dining was exquisite experience in a private room downstairs. The onsen baths were hot and very enjoyable. This place is well worth the money! Beautiful experience!
