My husband and I treated ourselves to the most amazing holiday we could dream of at the Gora Kadan. The Kadan Suite is stunning and the service is impeccable and truely Japanese. If you want a unique holiday weekend away from Tokyo it won’t get better than this.
Stayed here some years back. The quality of food and service has dumped down alot. It really is just a shadow of its former glory. Building itself is tired, needing a proper refit in many areas, the stay are not positive and food quality has dropped too.Massage service also very average and overpriced .It is full of loud foreigners when we stayed too.I found it was sold to new owners..and old owner operators have cashed out and left..thus standards have dropped .No reason to return again as simply poor value for money and not luxury anymore.
The hotel location is pretty good. Very good service. Very spacious suite, large enough to add tatami in the living room, the outdoor bathroom is very comfortable too. Dinner is Kaiseki cuisine, personally I think it’s even better than some of the Michelin restaurants. Breakfast can be served in Western or Japanese style. Breakfast and dinner are plentiful. Great value for money.
Walked from the Gora Station to the property. The bellmen practically ran to help us with our luggage (didn't have cell service so couldn't call for the sedan ride). Warmly greeted at the front desk and escorted to our room. Fairly large with anteroom/bathroom, then dining area, opening to large living/bedroom area that opened to a private garden. After reading multiple reviews, chose the western style bed (room D) to ensure a quality night's sleep. Recommend checking in right at check in time to maximize your time at the property. We only stayed one night. As soon as we settled in, we took their car service to the Hakone Open Air museum before it closed at 5PM. Worth a visit for sure. Before dinner changed into our yukata robes and toured the property taking pictures during golden hour. Had our Kaiseki dinner at 6PM (opted for an early meal - since we booked a 40 min session in the private family bath - wanted to leave some time to digest before going to spa). We really enjoyed everything that was served; however, I can see how those guests with a thoroughly Western palate might struggle. The private onsen is close to the public onsen - pick up the key at the front desk. They are very strict with timing though because it gets fully booked. Make sure to leave on time so they can prepare the onsen for the next guest. Next morning used the public onsen - indoor and outdoor options. Full bathing and shaving facility in locker area afterwards. For breakfast, had the option of Western or Japanese style - we're in Japan - so chose the Japanese style. Very nutritious, flavorful and filling. Checked out and stored our luggage - did the usual touristy Hakone day trip cable car-gondola-cruise-bus loop. Gathered our luggage in the afternoon and used the car service to the Gora station. Staff bowed good bye as our car left the property. Arigato!…
The room was nice and looked traditional and we slept on a single futon bed each even though we were a couple , we weren't offered a double futon, so we just pushed the beds together, we were given just one mattress , so we looked around and found another mattress to put underneath so we had 2 mattresses off the floor. We had our own private onsen which was lovely. Breakfast was included and was very nice. Our only issue was that they weren't very good with there English and when asked if we could have another cup of tea at breakfast they said no. Also they were really strict at getting you out dead on or before 10 am . We asked if we could leave our bags there at 10 am as our bus wasn't coming to 11.30 am and the first lady said no, and then i managed to talk to anothe person who said ok. Overall it was an interesting night.…
