The front of the house experience of this ryokan is nice. The staff are all incredibly thoughtful and accommodating, and check in is enjoyable. Beyond the lobby, many of the common areas (including the rooms themselves) are not what one would expect at this price point. There is chipping paint in common areas, elevators look worn, the pool area is extremely dated with chipped liner. All of this would be ok if it weren’t for the prices this ryokan charges. This place needs a major refresh. The fluorescent lighting in the main area of the guest room makes you feel like you’re in a doctor’s office. There were also many surfaces in the guest room caked in dust (the trim along the dividing walls). We had traditional Japanese meals in other restaurants in Tokyo, and enjoyed the food. The dinner at Gora Kadan was a bit rushed, and to echo another reviewer’s comment, it seemed like it was sitting around on a warming plate and wasn’t that good. I was looking forward to staying here. If I had to do it again, I’d consider other options (especially for the price). Overall, this wasn’t a particularly luxurious experience.

I really wanted to love Gora Kadan — but for the price — I was utterly disappointed. The place is not worth the money and I would not recommend staying there. It feels like it was probably a beautiful, well kept 5 star establishment two decades ago...but has not been kept up and is far beyond its glory years. The staff are the saving grace — very nice and gracious. But the property is tired. The furniture in the rooms and common areas is tattered. Walls and fixtures and stained. And the food was the worst I had on my trip to Japan. Some of the meals I even chose not to eat. The views are pretty and the area is nice — but do yourself a favor and spend your money elsewhere.

We stayed for 2 nights at Gora Kadan and felt it was the best of the Ryokans in Japan that we had stayed in. We opted for a Japanese room with open air stone bath and were delighted with the very generous space, cleanliness and facilities within our private room and the futons were particularly comfortable. The facilities of the Ryokan were excellent and the extensive multi-course Kaiseki was also the finest we had out of 7 Ryokans. Service and staff was impeccable - they took great pains to see we had everything we needed and even chauffeured us to the nearby Open Air Art park which is world class. We felt Gora and Hakone were lovely destinations and highly recommend both.

Really enjoy our stay here. The service was great and our in room attendant was really attentative. I think her name was Fuyuko or something... She led me to the room, saw the Yukata and then looked at me and said "wait a moment, I think these will be too big for u, let me get u a smaller one" without me asking or saying anything. She was really attentive. Our room tsubaki was really spacious, clean and nice! Love the Japanese garden and the hot tub too. It was a tad bit too hot for us, but don't worry u can easily adjust the temp with the knobs. We had in room Shiatsu massage and it was really good! The massage chairs upstairs was great too! Kaiseki dinner was alright. Fresh ingredients but no wow factor.

Hyped and overrated. Both the room and the foods are absolutely mediocre for the price they are charging. I have stayed 4-5 nights each at Zaborin, Beniya Mukayu and Myojinkan, and am now checking out of Gora Kadan after 3 nights. The teppanyaki beef in the last dinner probably weighed 2 pounds each but the quality was pathetic and we ate 1/3 of it just out of hunger. If you are looking for tranquility, onsen and most definitely foods, Beniya Mukayu will spoil you.
