traditional ryokan run by elderly couple and daughter, understaffed; they do everything, reception, cooking etc. not the cleanest place and in need of mending. traditional squat toilets only. the room was shabby. the nearest hostel to the station, almost literally on top of it. they do warn you to take it easy with heavy luggage, the ascent is very steep,... I spent one night in this "hotel" on May 24, 2014. Just terrible ! By Japanese standards, even worse ! Living in Japan for 2 years and knowing the country for many more years, I have been in other same types of minshuku (family type or B&B Japanese hotels) which were as old or older but this one is the... My friend booked me into this ryokan because she wanted me to have the experience of staying in one. Unfortunately, it was not the nicest place I stayed in at Japan and I am sure there are better options. The ryokan is conveniently located above the train station, however, this also means that one gets to hear the trains passing... More

I booked into this hostel after the recommendation of my flatmate, who stayed Xmas 2010. After reading a few of the reviews on here, we had another booking confirmed and cancelled this booking, Japannet.com takes 25% of your booking if you cancel between 7-14days. Very steep. This mean over £30 cancellation when I cancelled 14days from checking in. Beware.

We were very hesitant to visit this ryokan after reading some of the reviews, but now, after staying there, I feel that that I have to adjust a bit. The ryokan is situated right behind the Yumato Station, up the hill, a 5min walk. If you arrive at night or late afternoon, a series of paper lanterns is lit along... More

Living in Japan and being a fan of cheap minshuku, I dismissed the warnings of the other reviewers, much to my regret. I don't mind a common toilet and sink, but no hot water (even in the bath)? No western toilets (nevermind a shower toilet)? The floor of our room was so flimsy I thought I would fall through. We... More

couldnt belive the hotel when we found it, for $120 a night we where well and truly ripped of. It was the only disappointment we had while visiting Japan and glad we only got to stay for 1 night in this hotel

We were a bit afraid by reviews but actually we were very satisfied. It looked a little bit old but it's fine! no insects! n very clean and very hot in the room... but after the hot bath no need of the radiator! the staff was very nice and could speak 2 or 3 words in English! it was a... More

Initially, my mum and I were a bit apprehensive about staying in Kappa Tengoku because of all the bad reviews - that it was dirty, that there were too many stairs, that the toilets stunk. After all the horrible reviews, we were expecting Kappa Tengoku to be extremely rundown and hard to access. To our pleasant surprise, this was far... More
