We have stayed in lots of different places in Japan over the years; be it hotels, ryokans or guest houses/hostels. Simply put: This one tops all of them easily. First of all the staff is awesome. Every single person working here, be it a full time employee or someone only staying for a short wile is super nice, helpful and fun to hang out with and they all love this place. Second of all the activities: In the short time of our stay (4 nights), we were were able to take part in workshops about Japanese traditional dance, tea ceremony and spent a lot of fun time with the staff drinking and eating. All this while wearing our 100 yen rental Yukata! Third the location: Have you ever been to Kyoto and saw the awesome traditional houses at Kamo river with the lanterns in the evening? Well this is exactely what you will find here. Just being inside and gazing outside at the river from the huge shared spaces in on the first floor is amazing. Last but not least: The onsen! This cheap guest house has it's own onsen that can easily compare to ryokans with a price 5-10x above this guest house. You can use it 21 hours a day, even in the night (cleaning hours 11.00 - 15.00). It is refilled all the time with fresh spring water which is not circulating at all. Basically that means: Fresh water continously flows in and older water flows out. This way it is always perfectly clean. The only small thing is, that the old traditional building is clairaudient, but the guest house provides free ear plugs, so that should not be a problem. I can't thank the staff enough for creating this awesome environment and keeping the guest house in perfect shape.

Loved this place. Did not feel like a hostel but a delightful guest house. The staff were a team or treated each other as extended family members. Jacopo from Italy, Lucy from London, Chi and Masao provided a very warm welcome and hospitality. This is a haven with 2 private small onsens I used often and a beautiful public onsen separate for women and men. There's even a small water fountain onsen in front of the building. I also enjoyed having the river next to it. There's a lovely walking path. It's beneficial however to keep a mosquito or insect repellant handy. The train station is walking distance & this town is not far from Tokyo. The beds are futon on top of tatami flooring, I did not have a back pain upon waking up. The bathrooms are kept very clean with air freshener spray and the windows do open. The house has 2 kitchens, one has cooking facility and the other has a basic microwave and electric tea kettle. If you like seafood, the staff can recommend good quality restaurants yet inexpensive. I also enjoyed meeting other international guests from Asia, Europe and America as well as Japanese guests. This is a quiet town at night ideal for travelers who are seeking a more peaceful environment!

Our family of 4 loved this hostel. We did read a bit about Ryokans before arriving, and had more than one “oh, it’s a hostel” moment. In particular, they don’t serve food or tea and although staff was very friendly, everything is self service. Having understood that, it was just fabulous here. We had a nicely decorated tatami room for 4 people with river view on ground floor. We had some trouble sleeping on the Futons, but that’s not the hostel’s fault. But the ceiling did not block noises from above, and at one night, it took our kids a long time to fall asleep because of all the noise. Our room had a separate winter garden with sink and chairs, and with access outside. Toilets were somewhat far, but OK. There are no showers except in the Onsens. It’s an old labyrinthine Ryokan house. The shared kitchen arrangement has worked very well for us. There were enough plates and silverware for everyone, plus a huge fridge for guests. The table area can get a little crowded for breakfast, but we’ve always found a space. The Ryokan has two Onsens (one male, one female), and a couple of private Onsens on a first come, first served policy. We liked Ito very much as a contrast from the large cities we visited in Japan. The Ryokan is within walking distance from everything. Would stay here again.

This is a fabulous place, the staff are friendly and helpful. The social area are comfortable and attractive. Kitchen area more than adequate. Some good shops nearby, one , if you leave hostel facing the sea and turn right is particularly good ( can’t remember name, not one of the 7/11 types) Onsen really good

If you would like to feel on how to stay in the real japanese ryokan, you must stay here. Feeling relax stay here and prefer to stay in the 3rd floor. Location next to Ryokan Museum. Even, K’s House itself becoming tourist object since I noticed many tourist taking pictures to the guest house.
