We had a great stay at this comfortable Ryokan. Our trip only afforded us one night here, but we wish we could have stayed here longer. The location is a little out of the way, But Matsumoto is easy to get around and free bicycles are available at the Ryokan. The owner is also great about driving you to downtown or the train station. Otherwise, it is a short taxi ride from the Ryokan to almost anywhere. The neighborhood surrounding the Ryokan is quiet and nice to walk or bike around. As my son said, when can we go back? Matsumoto is an easy town to walk around. Downtown is small and comfortable and short distance from the castle.

Family run business, Wonderful people, warm and friendly. I stayed with my 7 year old for one night we both loved it, and we would have stayed longer if we could.
The food was great and they dropped us at the station the next morning. Stay hereif you can, you will not regret it!

Stayed here in April '12. Staff were fantastic, spoke perfect English & were really helpful. The western style breakfast was a welcome change not to mention really really good especially after 6months in japan (coffee was good to)!

Location was great, right on the river side & the free bike hire is a great plus it took us 15mins to cycle to Matsumoto castle. & they have great surprisingly accurate hand drawn maps of the local area & the downtown area with everywhere that they recommend to eat/drink etc.

Our room was spotless, came with towels & traditional Japanese dressing gowns & they have free wifi!

Recommend this to everyone!

As I write this review, I am waiting for Asko, daughter of owner, to take us to our next facility when it opens. This family will drop their chores and drive their guests instead of guests calling a taxi.

If you want a gracious family to be your hosts in Matsumoto, this is the place to stay. Great futons and fluffy duvets, hot showers and a soaking tub, and a choice of delicious breakfasts. My family of 4 adults stayed here for 6 nights and we would, all, highly recommend Seifu-so.

The host family are warm and helpful. The facility is very clean and comfortable and wi fi everywhere. We would definitely use this Ryokan again.

Thank you Asko and family for making our stay so pleasant and worry free.

I stayed here for 2 nights with my husband and parents (Both in there 60s) and we all had a great time.

The owners are extremely friendly and happy to provide advice on local restaurants, trips etc. We bought our tickets for Matsumoto Castle at the guesthouse for half price and they also arranged a trip to Kamikochi for the 4 of us direct from the guesthouse.

The western breakfasts were welcomed by my folks and my mum even had a 'toast only' breakfast on the last day. Very accommodating hosts.

We had such a wonderful week at Seifuso Ryokan. The rooms are lovely - we stayed in the annex which has a communal kitchen, really nice to be able to cook your own meals. Having said that, dinner and breakfast at the Ryokan are delicious. They have a western option if you're sick of rice and fish for breakfast.. and great coffee!! The family are lovely and always there to help any time of day/ night. Speak perfect English too. The Ryokan is beside a river with great views of the mountains and you can borrow bikes to cycle round lovely Matsumoto. We took the opportunity to dress up in Kimono and have a tea ceremony, which was so much fun and very reasonable. I would definitely recommend staying here for a very relaxed, comfortable and friendly family environment. This was definitely our favourite ryokan during our trip in Japan!

I stayed here for two nights in April 2012. I can't add much to the other reviews, except to say that the family that runs this place really actually cares whether you enjoy your visit. They do all the little things you don't expect, but really make a visit special. They are also very friendly to english speakers, and offered me an impeccable experience. I recommend them as much as I can. Six stars if possible.

We lived in Tokyo for some time, and have traveled extensively in Japan. We always put a ryokan in our trip plans in order to experience the true Japanese lifestyle. Ryokan Seifuso in Matsumoto ranks as one of the most pleasant experiences we have ever had. Sure, one can spend 100's of dollars on exquisite inns in Japan, but as for value for money, Seifuso can't be beat. We know a little Japanese, but the Seifuso does not require any language skill to appreciate it. It is a completely bilingual operation, complete with cute hand-drawn maps of the area which were invaluable to walking around Matsumoto and the neighborhood. The management insisted on adjusting the onsen schedule at the ryokan, to allow my wife and I private use of the bath - we have never experienced such attention to guest needs before. While it may seem a bit outside of downtown, we actually walked all the way back to the train station on our last day, it was a very pleasant 2-3 miles or so, through many narrow streets and flat roads along the river. Don't let its location divert you to other accomodations! Do yourself a favor, and if you stay at only one ryokan in the area, make it Seifuso.

This is a great Ryokan.

The lady of the house and her daughter speak English.

The service is impeccable - lots of home produced maps recommending things to do/eat/visit in Matsumoto (which is a beautiful city - very relaxed). And the family are happy to make recommendations.

The Ryokan is a little way from the station but the owners are happy to pick you up from the station (and take you back!).

The Japanese breakfast is wonderful.

My only regret is that we did not spend more time in Matsumoto. The people there are lovely and the family at Seifu-so are particularly so.

I loved all the places we visited in Japan but if I was forced to pick one above the others I would vote for the Seifu-so.

This japanese ryogan provides quiet , relaxing, friendly service and stay. Room we stayed is tatami matt paved with river view. The public bath time is 6:00am-11:00pm ( with hot water) shared separated male/female bathrooms). We drove our private car with free parking. Helpful and english speaking staff welcomed us at time of checkin and checkout. Paid japanese /western breakfast is also provided on request.
