We very much enjoyed our time at Takayama, and staying at Zenkoji temple! The temple itself is beautiful and old, and the matresses were heated (a nice surprise). We also enjoyed meeting other guests in the common kitchen! The host was very helpful with all our needs, helping us find our way around and supportive with whatever was needed to... More

I stayed in private bedroom, tatami with electric blanket to keep you warm at night. But the carpet near toilet was smelly. The hostel need renovation for toilet and shower rooms. Zen garden in the middle need to be taken care from the owner. I'm ok that check-out time is 9:30AM you can leave your luggage there as long as... More

The accommodation is basic and good value. Showers, kitchen, etc all fine. The temple did not seem to be in use while we were there - e.g. there are no monks in residence. The guy who runs it really should learn to enjoy his guests rather than treat everyone who walks through the door as a potential rule breaker/upset to... More

If I go to Takayama again, I don't think I'll stay there and I don't want to recommend anyone this place. First of all, they say this is a Non Profit Organization so the fees are " donation" basis, although the owner requres you to pay 3,000yen per night per person. So I think the guy misunderstood the idea of... More

We stayed 3 nights at Zenkoji and would stay again. Overall the experience was very positive. The temple is a very unique accommodation experience - the rooms are tucked behind sliding doors along narrow corridors. The kitchen is quite adequate - although we found it just as cheap to each out at budget restaurants and so used it very little.... More

This place is located very close to all the action in Takayama and it makes a great base for exploring the town. We had a private room for 3 nights, which had sliding doors onto the main temple area. It was very spacious and we loved our futon beds. The main hall of the temple itself was absolutely freezing at... More

Been here in October 2015 and loved it. peaceful quiet all guests super uber respectful of each other (dead silence from 9.30pm) a place where you can relax indeed. As it's a temple and it's run by a charity oorganizatin service is basic but to me it was fantastic. If you're curious, not pretentious and you can be quiet when... More

This hostel is a temple and that makes your stay a special experience! The place is very quiet, so if you're looking for some action go somewhere else. The kitchen is big, the common room cozy and the rooms supercozy in japanese style! And I really enjoyed the zen garden! The nun is friendly. Unfortunately she doesn't speak English very... More

Our traditional Japanese twin room was extremely big, clean and comfy. The host Yukina was very welcoming, kind and helpful. It was a different place to stay in, we have never stayed in a working temple before and we would highly recommend it.

This place has a very interesting history, which the hostesses does not tell you up unless you chat with her for sometime. We encountered her in the share kitchen common area one night, and she told us the history of Zenkoji. The temple has been in her family since 1893, and her grandfather and parents are unable to take care... More
