Detailed Reviews
Very comfortable & clean little Inn which is 10 mins walk to old town, morning market or bus/train terminal. The room size is good, big enough for 4 adult and space to open up our 4 big luggage. Bath & toilet are shared but we have no problem with that as we have the whole place to ourselves most of the time. Bath area is separated into male (on 1st floor) & female (on 2nd floor) with a small Onsen. Don't need to worry about food, there are lots of restaurant nearby. Is value for money for the price I paid.

I spent 2 nights at this minshuku recently and whist it’s not luxurious I thought it provided excellent value for money, and would be hard to beat in terms of accommodation in this price range. The minshuku provides both western and Japanese style rooms, most of which are not ensuite, and has 2 lovely hot spring baths, one for men and the other for women. The tatami rooms were not large, but were adequate, and came equipped with a small table, cushions, a safe, television and fridge. The safe may be useful for valuables as the locks on the door were fairly primitive, though in 5 months in Japan there has never been an occasion where I’ve felt I needed to be concerned about the safety of my belongings. It seemed as though most rooms looked out onto the road so would have a view of the pagoda at the nearby Kokubunji temple. The bathrooms were great, very clean and the hot spring bath was very relaxing after a days hectic sightseeing. The toilets were in a separate room, and constantly smelt a little bit chemically, which perhaps is the one thing that could be improved on. I ate breakfast on both mornings that I stayed here and thought the food was very good, it was Japanese style, and included the usual miso soup, rice, seaweed, pickles, with the addition of a piece of salmon and a local specialty, hoba miso, a magnolia leave laid over a charcoal brazier with miso, onions, shiitake mushrooms on top, it was delicious. In terms of location, the minshuku is in the new town about 5 minutes from the train and bus station, and about 5 minutes again from the area with all the old buildings.

Family run Minshuku (type of ryokan). Tha owner speaks a bit of english. She is nice and helpfull.
Her meals are great, escpecially breakfast (Japanese), served in a very traitional dining room.
The rooms (western style) are clean, without anything special. Some have a view on a pagoda. a few are en suite.
Not so cheap (12000 yens + meals for 2 people) but it is still a good option.
Free bikes are available to travel around, which great, the centerTakayama is very flat, you won't kill urself, and save lots of time !

We stayed 2 nights at this ryokan and had a wonderful and comfortable stay. It was only a short walk from the JR Takayama station and we did not have any trouble pulling our heavy luggage from the station to the ryokan.
Upon checking in, you'll find a ready flask of hot water with green tea sachets and Japanese rice crackers waiting in your room. Thought it was a nice touch. The flask of hot water is also refilled daily.
As with most traditional ryokans, there is no lift and it can be difficult if you're traveling with a huge/heavy luggage. There is also no toilet/shower in your own room. The male and female toilets were located on different floors so it can be inconvenient if you've to go upstairs/downstairs just to use the toilet.
The public shower area (separate for men and women) includes a small indoor onsen which was really a welcome relief in winter! Shower area and toilets were kept very clean. Do note that the shower area is only open at certain times of the day (7am-10am and 4pm-10pm).
Overall, it was a comfortable stay and certainly cheaper than most ryokans in Takayama. Would recommend this if you're on a budget but would still like to have the traditional Japanese experience.

Stayed one night on a recent trip to Takayama and Shirakawago from Nagoya. The inn was about a 5-10 minute walk from the train station and located near a some nice eateries. It was snowing the entire visit but the hotel was warm and inviting. The room is extremely simple, with shared baths and communal sinks. But everything seemed clean and the futons were adequate. Would return if we ever go back to Takayama for an overnight trip.

This guest house is an easy 10min walk from the JR train station. It does not have a 24h reception. We arrived after 10pm and everything was dark on the outside and inside. The owner came after we waited in the entrance room for about 1 min. We had to take our shoes off and stored them in an unlocked cabinet near the entrance door with our room number on it. The owner, who does not speak English, cleaned the wheels of our suitcases before we entered. We had room 205, which is a Japanese room that is not much bigger than the two beds with firm mattresses that are in it. The entrance door is only 6ft tall but the room has a normal ceiling. The room also has a separate bathroom that does not have a high tech toilet seat that you see in hotels all over Japan. There is also a small entrance room with as small fridge, a small wardrobe and the bedroom has a small closet that you can use to store some clothes. The bathroom comes with a multi use bottle of shampoo, liquid soap and, I guess, as bottle of hand sanitizer. Two complimentary toothbrushes with tooth paste were provided and there was no hair dryer. Hair dryers are installed in the onsens and at a public sink on the first floor. Be careful, the hot water is extremely hot! There is a notice on the bathroom door saying that bath times are from 7-9am and 4-10pm which was real inconvenient as we are early risers.
The bedroom also has a flat screen TV with no English channels, a quiet and efficient A/C, a safe and a thermal can with hot water, 2 tea bags and 2 paper thin cookies. The floor is hardwood with Japanese mats throughout the guesthouse whereas the bathroom is all plastic floor, ceiling and wall panels. The hotel was supposed to have free wifi which was not working in our room. I was only able to connect in the entrance on the 1st floor.
I had booked this hotel through hotels.com and, interestingly, there was absolutely no paperwork and the owner did not even check our IDs.
Check-out time is 10am; breakfast was not included in our room rate which was below US$100. There are plenty of restaurants a few blocks away from the guest house.
Long story short: If you like a Japanese experience in a private guest house then this may be for you.

The hotel is modest but the installations are clean and comfortable. We loved the very central location in the heart of Takayama, which allowed us to reach all the main town attractions by foot.
If you have a chance to try the Japanese breakfast, please do: the Hoba miso on rice was delicious!
Our host spoke enough English to make communication functionnal, and she was extremely helpful in the true japanese hospitality fashion.

The ryokan was only 5 mins walk from Takayama station. And the old street is about 10 mins walk from Minshuku. So it is situated at a very convenient location. The room is clean. However, there is no lift, so gotta carry the suitcases up to our room at 2nd level. Not easy when the luggage was heavy.
