Asunaro Inn is a traditional style building made of 200-year-old materials brought from the historic Echigo area of Niigata Prefecture. I welcome foreign tourists to my inn with our warm hospitality and homely atmosphere, and I would like them to learn about Japanese traditions, culture, and cuisine. Whenever you come to Takayama, please consider Asunaro Inn as your premier choice. Thank you very much. The building where the lobby is used to be an old landlord's house in the village on the mountain of Niigata prefecture and is built with thick Keyaki wood. This house was built without nails to withstand the high humidity and 4-5 meters of snow the area receives. Our lobby has a great reputation because it displays the consistency, simplicity, and serenity of the Japanese architecture style. We will preserve this cultural site. We are sure that all our guests will be pleased with the beauty of the old Japanese architecture. We promise you will feel relaxed and at home.

The hotel's traditional Japanese ambiance, cleanliness, and meticulous attention to detail are celebrated by guests seeking an authentic experience. Spacious, comfortable rooms with a traditional flair are frequently commended.

The ryokan was beautiful and the favorite part of our trip. My husband and I came in later than expected (check-in time is supposed to be in the afternoon which I highly recommend doing to allow the host to prepare properly as they prepare for the next day’s breakfast which was AMAZING since we were able to take the region’s specialties).
The host was extremely accommodating and patiently explained the amenities. Loved the traditional styled bathrooms, beds, and general ambience of the ryokan. The onsen and bathrooms in general were relaxing and peaceful as there is limited rooms available. The yukata, socks, and indoor slippers provided were comfortable and the staff were patient with us getting used to the ryokan etiquette.
The spacious room also had recommendations of restaurants and a guide to the area. The room was kept warm by an A/C unit per room which you can alter the temperature if you needed. There was also a traditional sitting area in the room and right outside the shades (which allowed privacy and another chance to appreciate the traditional Hida-Takayama craftsmanship.

The Ryokan was absolutely amazing, incredibly clean, with traditional tatami mats and futon for you to sleep on which were very very comfortable. The entire inn was decorated with very nice traditional furniture which made photo-taking an absolute blast. Do note that the futons trap heat very well so don't sleep with the heater on at max or you will wake up in a sweat. In the room, there is a list of restaurant recommendations that is set out in English, very good food.
Breakfast was relatively simple in a nice restaurant within the inn. They offered their famous miso paste served on the leaf grill. Staff were very polite and helpful.
Went to their quaint little public bath that had everything you needed - moisturiser, hair dryer, facial products. It was a nice good soak (note it's a hot tub).

Excellent stay with top notch service. Beautiful traditional furnishing which is clean and new yet preserving Japanese cultural elements. Staff are all friendly and helpful and speak good basic English, which helps a lot. The ryokan meals (breakfast and dinner) were both excellent and worth every penny.

Ryokan (traditional Japanese hotel) that exceeded our expectations. Super spacious rooms, with many details taken care of to the millimeter and the staff super friendly and friendly. As soon as you arrive you have to leave your shoes at the entrance to walk with some slippers that they provide you and you also choose a yukata to wear during your stay. The traditional Japanese breakfast was amazing! Also, if you are celiac, they adapt your breakfast to gluten-free continental. The onsen is very cool but it's a shame that it can't be reserved to go privately with your partner. Without a doubt if we returned to Takayama we would repeat the experience!

Very typical Japanese hotel, right at the entrance you already have to leave your shoes. The reception speaks English until a certain time, this hotel has laundry at a great price. Very well located near the motorway station. The Japanese style breakfast is important if you make sure you eat the typical food as it is quite different. The bathroom is amazing well Japanese style with bench and basin. The wonderful room well Japanese style.

Lovely staff. Good location near the centre of town Great room and atmosphere was cosy Food was pretty good and we liked the quiet feeling of the restaurant - food was ok/good but not amazing There was a good spa area too. Free bikes was a bonus But - they need to get rid of at least half of the laminated notices all over the hotel No one needs signs saying - 'Don't use more hand towels than you need' etc Gave the place a youth hostel vibe that it really isn't

Best hotel experience we have had by far. We headed on a day trip to Shirakawa-go and came back by bus to Takayama. The Ryokan is only a 6 minute walk from Takayama train station and bus terminal so the trip was swift with small luggage). We arrived late by almost an hour (English speaking host works until 5:30pm), even so, they were very understanding. We were greeted with indoor shoes at the front of the Ryokan, our bags were taken straight up to our room before we even checked in. The English host guided us up to our room and gave us a tour of the amenities. The room itself is very spacious and separated into three parts with the toilet, shower and sink being separate, making it easier for groups to use each amenities when needed. The next part of the room has a closet, fridge, tv ( Has Netflix on remote, must require your own account) and lounging area. The last part is the most relaxing section which is the bedroom with the futons. Laid out were three large futons which were VERY comfortable along with the air conditioner and air purifier making our sleep in a Takayama winter serene.

We stayed it this Ryokan for 2 nights, room only, in early March. The hotel is centrally located 10 min easy walk to station. The welcome was warm and check in swift. Note you need to leave shoes in foyer and change into provided slippers. This is explained and assisted by staff as they collect your luggage. Our room, Standard with shower, was good with nice local touches, and Japanese bedding. Extra pillows available. Hotel decoration is beautiful. Coin operated laundry helpful, seperate men/women Onsen on site. Hotel offered breakfast and has a restaurant which we didn’t use, but we heard from others during our stay that the breakfast was good.

This ryokan is fabulous! The room is very large and clean, basically a mini apartment, with attention to the smallest details and equipped with all comforts and amenities. The staff is very courteous and at certain times there are staff who speak English. At the entrance it is necessary to remove your shoes and wear the slippers provided by the staff. It is possible to walk around the ryokan with a delicious Yukata, which the property makes available. There is also a clean and well-kept honsen. In the room there is the possibility of preparing a hot tea and enjoying it in the dedicated area. The property also has a microwave and a vending machine for drinks. Highly recommended, wonderful experience!

I visited with a friend on a girls trip. It was snowing on the day, and the view was very fantastic. The inn was warm, and I was very satisfied with the abundant use of ingredients from Hida Takayama for rice. The hot springs were also at the right temperature for a long time. It was so easy to get to the morning market in Takayama, and they lent me snow boots and umbrellas when it snowed. If you have the chance to visit again, this is a place you would definitely like to visit.
