Travelers' Choice
Asunaro Inn is a traditional style building made of 200-year-old materials brought from the historic Echigo area of Niigata Prefecture. I welcome foreign tourists to my inn with our warm hospitality and homely atmosphere, and I would like them to learn about Japanese traditions, culture, and cuisine. Whenever you come to Takayama, please consider Asunaro Inn as your premier choice. Thank you very much. The building where the lobby is used to be an old landlord's house in the village on the mountain of Niigata prefecture and is built with thick Keyaki wood. This house was built without nails to withstand the high humidity and 4-5 meters of snow the area receives. Our lobby has a great reputation because it displays the consistency, simplicity, and serenity of the Japanese architecture style. We will preserve this cultural site. We are sure that all our guests will be pleased with the beauty of the old Japanese architecture. We promise you will feel relaxed and at home.

Traditional ryokan in Takayama area. We stayed in family room for six people. The room was a bit snugged for six, but okay for Japanese standard. The breakfast set was traditional Japanese style. The food was abundant and tasty. It’s unfortunate that we got to the hotel pretty late at night, so we didn’t get a chance to try their dinner. The owner and overall service was nice as well. Our stay at this ryokan surely was one of the highlights of our trip.

Traditional Inn in great location with warm hearted people. Since this was our first trip to Gufu, I asked their recommendation for place to visit, everyone in the hotel was so kind to share their recommendation for good Sake place, restaurant, cafes, Ramen, etc.

Staying here was a beautiful experience. In difficult times it felt like we were in a bubble. The staff were friendly, polite and helpful. The onsen was a treat. The ryokan was a easy introduction to a distinct Japanese experience. Breakfast options included Japanese and western. We had both. They were both great. We will come again.

Only 6 mins walk from the station, this is a pretty and comfortable ryokan. It’s easy to explore Takayama on foot and there are bikes available. We stayed here 2 nights on traditional mattresses and tatami mats. There’s a private onsen and we had a traditional dinner and traditional breakfast which are truly unique experiences. Everything is exquisitely presented.

Asunaro was the favourite place we stayed in during a two week trip to Japan; in fact it now rates as one of my favourite hotels/inns anywhere in the world. The ryokan is beautiful with lovely wood craftsmanship everywhere from the lobby to the bedrooms. Our room (with a traditional coal cooker) was large and extremely comfortable with western chairs as well as Japanese furniture. All the staff were incredibly friendly and helpful - the owner even drove us to the train station on a miserable rainy morning after we had requested a taxi. (The ryokan is an easy walk to the station.) Food was delicious - we only had breakfast but it was a feast - Japanese-style one day and western the second. I am sure dinner would be exceptional and delicious but we, perhaps unwisely, choose to head out to restaurants. And unlike other hotels and ryokans there was a table in the dining area with juice, water and a proper coffee machine for self service. As for Takayama, it has some pretty cool nightlife/bars as well as charming architecture and musuems. And the morning market has all sorts of great foodie delicacies. All within easy walking distance of Asunaro. I recommend Asunaro very highly!

Room Tip: We upgraded to a larger room with a traditional coal fire and it was well worth the extra price...
