From the moment we arrived we knew this place was going to be fabulous. We were greeted enthusiastically by a delightful lady and checked in with a colour choice for ladies Yakata and navy for the blokes. The ladies get a different colour of three each day! The rooms were immaculately presented and spacious by Japanese standards. The bathroom particularly... More

This ryokan is about a 10 minute walk from the station--very manageable. The people were very friendly and our room was spacious and comfortable. We had a room with a wooden bathtub, which my husband used. My daughter and I went to the communal bath down the hall. There was no one else in the communal bath and we used... More

As some of the previous reviewers mentioned, this medium-sized, family-run ryokan would not be a place for luxury. That said, for the price, one would get a very good experience of traditional Takayama. The location of the ryokan was excellent -- about 10 minutes walk from the train station along the main street, surrounded by good restaurants of all kinds,... More

We stayed for two nights at this accomodation. The rooms are clean and spacious. The bathroom was excellent size. The best thing about this hotel were its staff (hilarious, friendly, kind old ladies who welcomed us and generally made a fuss) and its location (5 minute walk from the old part of town near restauarants, sake breweries, two open-air markets).... Easy to find Tanabe from the station, around 10 mins walk. The owner was very polite and friendly. The staff were very polite and friendly, and hospitable. You really felt welcome into "their home". Even though the staff speak mainly Japanese, we could understand them very well, through their hand gestures and expressions. I would go back to Tanabe if... More

My husband and I stayed in this Ryokan just one night. We found it really nice. We did ONSEN( a bit small but clean and comfortable). We had a typical Japanese dinner with a lot of Japanese specialities. Everything was very good. The room had "tatami", a curious bathroom and no beds. We slept on "Futon" and we have to... More

We had a wonderful stay at this ryokan with an accomodation on the more simple side. The service was very charming although they don't speak English very well. The food was outstanding - we had dinner for two nights and got different food. What a great selection of various japanese food - the whole table was covered with delicious dishes.... More

My family of four booked Ryokan Tanabe in Takayama based on the wonderful Tripadvisor reviews. Upon checkin, we were walked through the newer part of the hotel to an older room in the back. We were initially ok, but upon inspection of the room (old 1980s style pink bathroom), I asked the owner if we could switch to one of... More

This ryokan has a great location, approximately 7 mins walk from the train station and about 5 mins walk to the historic district of Takayama. The owner of the ryokan is very hand's own and greets the guests personally and provides suggestions. She is very proud of her ryokan, and her town of Takayama. She makes for a great resource... This is one of the better small-medium ryokans. It's big enough to have a decent onsen, and still offers the warmth and attention of a family-run inn. Dinner was excellent (although the Hida beef is only about 3 slices worth so don't expect a whole steak!) The ryokan is just a few minutes walk from Takayama old town and the... More
