This was hands down the best place we stayed in Japan and I'm actually wordless to describe our experience. Starting with the extreme friendliness of the staff - especially the old yet energetic lady who does your bed and serves you breakfast - who will go out of their way to make you feel at home. The rooms are beautifully decorated with tatami floors and come with a gorgeous view of the river. Much more comfortable than I was expecting. As a plus, you can use the private onsen downstairs (perfect after a long day walking). Location is perfect, right across the river from the morning market and the "black" old town streets. Staying here is a bit like going back in time and is a relaxing experience everyone should have. The only thing I would point out is that the dinner is

From entering this small hotel and being warmly greeted by the owners our stay here was of an authentic, interesting and genuine cultural experience. We stayed three days, had a room with a terrace, ate breakfast and dinner at the ryokan. The service was exemplary, the helpfulness and just downright niceness of the owners was a joy. The meals were exemplary and everything you could wish for. The food was delicious, beautiful to look at, well balanced and interesting. We loved our stay here.

The owners are very friendly and welcoming. This was our first trip to Japan but the 3rd Ryokan so we were ready for the shoes off at the door and steep stairs upto our room. The view over the river was lovely and the hostess makes sure all guests are settled in and have the right sized Yakuta's ( informal Kimono ) which are worn properly ( even shows how to tie the Obi ( belt ) correctly. Dinner is downstairs in your own room and is sitting on chairs (no legs) at floor level...if you struggle with getting down due to hip/back/ankle issues you will struggle. The meal is beautifully prepared and traditional ... by this point in the holiday we were better with our chopsticks and braver with eating things we had never come across before. You can use the onsen downstairs which has a

It is the age of this place that captured the hearts of my wife and I. Not to mention the above and beyond hospitality of all the staff at the Ryokan. It is simply amazing. Even if you are like me who always prefer to stay at newly built hotels, give this place a try, you won't be disappointed. And for the price I say it's bang for the buck. I only wish I could stay one more night! Takayama is such a nice place to stroll and just chill off your day. We arrived late at the hotel due to prolonged shopping at Premium Outlet so I emailed via Booking.com to let the ryokan know of my estimated arrival. They responded within an hour and told us they will be waiting for us. And before we dragged our suitcase through the front door, the gentleman came up and assisted me. Check-in

We stayed here for two nights with our six year old daughter. The lady that runs the ryokan is an older Japanese lady who is absolutely delightful. She gave our daughter cute snoopy slippers and a new colourful kimono to wear each day, which our daughter absolutely loved getting dressed up in to wear around the ryokan. We had two breakfasts and one dinner. We ordered a western breakfast for our daughter, but otherwise we ate Japanese style which was delicious, varied and plentiful. The ryokan also had onsen, which was a new and pleasant bathing experience for us. For an authentic and thoroughly enjoyable Japanese guesthouse experience, staying in a ryokan is a must do in Japan. Has been one of the highlights of our trip so far!
