My husband and I stayed at Sumiyoshi near the end of a ten-day trip to Japan because we wanted to try the ryokan experience for one night. Sumiyoshi was perfect - intimate, homey, and welcoming, exactly what we were hoping for. We arrived by train shortly after 5 p.m. and walked to the inn,, a nice 15- to 20-minute walk... More

The hospitality of the owners (very nice Japanese couple) is very much genuine and make you feel at home. The room was big and very traditional, and amazing decoration. Slept on the floor ("futon setup") as expected from a traditional Ryokan, and it was REALLY comfortable. Helps even more that you can hear the river in the background. very soothing.... More

Being my first ryokan I was not sure what to expect about Sumiyoshi in Takayama. We decided to walk the few blocks from the station to the ryokan. It is about a 15 minute walk through the center of the city and past many little shops. We were promptly and warmly greeted and taken to our room on the second... More

I stayed at Sumiyoshi Ryokan for one night as a solo traveller. I have been to Japan a quite a few times, but this was my first time staying at a ryokan and it was absolutely fantastic! The ryokan is located in the heart of Takayama old town, in a gorgeous old house/inn and definitely gives you a glimpse of... More

My mother and I stayed at this ryokan in 1991 and it was a memorable experience so I chose it again for the 2 nights that my husband and I were in Takayama in May. We were not disappointed: the service was excellent, as were the dinner and breakfast we enjoyed in our room. The bedding was comfortable, sharing a... More

This was our first ryokan experience in Japan run by an absolutely delightful couple who were extremely welcoming. The room was quaintly decorated and the communal hotel bath was a welcome relief after a long days walking. Dinner - what can I say - amazing!!!!!!! A memorable experience - a boring business hotel definitely can't compare.

This ryokan was one of the highlights of our trip to Japan. If the cost were for accommodation alone it would be rather too expensive, but when food is factored in it is worth every penny! We did not initially plan to eat there every night, but quickly decided it was too good to turn down. Food was fresh, seasonal,... More

We went in august, 2 adults and our 5 years old daughter. We were looking for accommodations with a little bit lower prices, but the reviews from this ryokan made us spend a little bit more and be able to stay at such special place and have also a dinner there to top the experience. We had stayed in other... More

We travelled 3 days (and 2 nights) to Takayama, from where we've visited the surroundings, during our trip in Japan. We were looking for a traditional Japanese accomodation, with traditional rooms, sleep in a futon, onsen and all this stuff. We arrived on Takayama on Sunday Morning, and the old couple who manage the Ryokan let us to do the... More

We planned a trip a year ahead for the Cherry Blossom festival in Takayama and quickly decided that this would be the Riokan we had to stay in (TA reviews). A short taxi ride from the station, the owner was waiting out in the street to welcome us and take us across to Sumiyoshi. On arrival we thought this traditional... More
