It has been the first time we stayed at a ryokan, and the Hirayukan turned out to be a great choice. The onsen (Japanese baths) was a really good experience as well as the traditional Japanese cuisine that we tried while we were staying there. We booked a private onsen at night and we weren't charged for it. The staff... More

The room is very spacious, with 3 areas, bedroom is separated from the main sitting area, so very comfortable. There are also chairs and coffee table in the room in case you are not used to sitting on the floor. The room offers a spectacular view, snowy landscape with running water, bridge, and if you are lucky enough, you'll see... More

We were travelling between Matsumoto and Takayama and decided to spend a night at Hirayu Onsen. The town is dead quiet in the midst of winter when we arrived, and still dead quiet when we left the next day. The ryokan is a little old, but everything was in good condition, as expected of a Japanese ryokan. The rooms were... More

Our family of 4 stayed in this historic ryokan and enjoyed every bit of it. It has a new wing and and old wooden building blended seamlessly together such that when you stay in the new wing you would have to pass thru the old building with the floor creaking under your feet to go to the onsen. On the... More

We opted for the half board which included 9 course dinner and breakfast. The dinner was delicious and we also ordered additional Hida beef with hoba miso. Drinks were additional as usual. But overall very reasonable for such great quality. The highlight though was clearly the onsen. On the night I was there? The ladies onsen was on the second... More

The hotel was outdated, in need of serious renovation. We stayed in western style room and the bathroom was so small and dirty. I couldn't believe this could happen in Japan especially with the price we paid but it did. We dare not look inside the blanket cover as we afraid we wouldn't be able to sleep. I'm glad we... More

We were quite happy with our stay - a great first experience in an onsen, the delicious meals, the easy access to the bus station. My travel companion insisted on western style beds, though, which were expensive. Pros: 3 minute walk from the bus station, excellent service (the man at the front desk even helped my mom fix her eyeglasses),... More

This is a great place: the food is good, the view is great, the onsen are among the best we've been at, the room was large and comfortable. But you pay a lot for all that which is why I did not rate the place "excellent". If you want to hike in Kamikochi and look for a place to start... More
