this ryokan was located a bus ride away from takayama and a bus ride away from kamikochi - in the japanese alps. we were here for the fall foliage and hiking in kamikochi which are beautiful and worth at least a couple of days. at the end of each day it was wonderful coming back to the ryokan and having...

As a Westerner, the experience of a Ryokan is a wonderful one and should be a part of every Japan experience. Sleeping on tatamis, eating Japanese style in setting and sitting, and of course enjoying the onsen - those are wonderful experiences. Set in a charming village with hot springs flowing into troughs along the roads, with winding forest lanes...

The first time staying in a ryokan. Quiet enjoy it. The private batch is not open for 3 days maintainance. However. The public batch indoor and outdoor is sufficient after a tiring day outdoor. Recommended.

Stayed here for 2 nights. This is one hour outside of Takayama which we didn't realise and were a bit disappointed about as this is a very quiet town with not many options for eating out. The room itself we found in need of updating and carpets, walls and bathroom looking a bit tired (there was a cigarette burn on...

There aren't many options for solo travellers at Hirayu so I had to stay at Okada Warukutei. I think the staff were very helpful and polite. As I do speak some Japanese, I didn't experience any trouble. I noticed that when I made the effort to speak in Japanese, they were very happy and more forthcoming in providing suggestions/recommendations! One...

This hotel is in a lovely old building with special fireplaces around which groups can have their dinner. I stayed for two nights in one of their rooms with a private open-air hot spring bath. This was very atmospheric and the water was very warm. However, I thought it could have been cleaned a little better - there were cobwebs...

My first experience of a typical Japanese ryokan and it was most pleasant. Very traditional although small but cute and artfully decorated. Service was excellent and the 'feast' we had for the tour group was well presented. Even gave us a taste of plum wine! Service was great from all but especially the lady who took us on a tour...

We had originally intended to stay at Hirayu No Mori but unfortunately it was fully booked. Not having stayed there I can't vouch for how it compares. We wanted to experience a Ryokan at some point in our trip and found many of the options to be very, very expensive. We chose Okada Ryokan Warakutei because it was relatively inexpensive...

A nice (but maybe a bit old) hotel with a good spa. The hotel itself is not that good looking (anymore) but the experience of a traditional Ryokan is great in itself. The spa is really good (we had it al to ourselves!) and the food is picture perfect (see the picture!). All in all a good choice if you...

The roykan itself does not feel as old to me as some suggested in the comments. It is definitely not new but I would rather put it as "traditional", and I did not feel it is dirty by any standard. 5 of us arrived right before 6pm to have dinner after a long day at Tateyama alpine route and a...
