There aren't many options for solo travellers at Hirayu so I had to stay at Okada Warukutei. I think the staff were very helpful and polite. As I do speak some Japanese, I didn't experience any trouble. I noticed that when I made the effort to speak in Japanese, they were very happy and more forthcoming in providing suggestions/recommendations! One... More

This hotel is in a lovely old building with special fireplaces around which groups can have their dinner. I stayed for two nights in one of their rooms with a private open-air hot spring bath. This was very atmospheric and the water was very warm. However, I thought it could have been cleaned a little better - there were cobwebs... More

My first experience of a typical Japanese ryokan and it was most pleasant. Very traditional although small but cute and artfully decorated. Service was excellent and the 'feast' we had for the tour group was well presented. Even gave us a taste of plum wine! Service was great from all but especially the lady who took us on a tour... We had originally intended to stay at Hirayu No Mori but unfortunately it was fully booked. Not having stayed there I can't vouch for how it compares. We wanted to experience a Ryokan at some point in our trip and found many of the options to be very, very expensive. We chose Okada Ryokan Warakutei because it was relatively inexpensive... More

A nice (but maybe a bit old) hotel with a good spa. The hotel itself is not that good looking (anymore) but the experience of a traditional Ryokan is great in itself. The spa is really good (we had it al to ourselves!) and the food is picture perfect (see the picture!). All in all a good choice if you... More

The roykan itself does not feel as old to me as some suggested in the comments. It is definitely not new but I would rather put it as "traditional", and I did not feel it is dirty by any standard. 5 of us arrived right before 6pm to have dinner after a long day at Tateyama alpine route and a... The room is ugly and dirty. The walls in the bath have lots of spots. The carpet and the tatamis have ugly spots. There are no plugs to charge your devices except behind the television. No WiFi in the room and the WiFi in the lobby was switched to 0 bit/sec at 2100. Some of the receptionists are not friendly.... More

This was my first ryokan experience which was good. The overall hotel was ok with traditional japan style especially the bed room. It’s about 15 minutes’ walk from bus station (I came from Matsumoto city). When reached hotel, I got the corner room which was the nice view around. It started snowing during my visit in the beginning of Dec... More

We stayed here for 5 nights as a family of 4 with 2 young children (ages 5 & 7). Because it's early summer, part of the hotel's exterior was undergoing maintenace, which is totally understandable. But what we didn't understand was why we were given a room which is right behind the scalfolding. So no view to speak of. Front... More

We chose to stay at Okada Ryokan because it is a relatively inexpensive accommodation option to access the nearby attractions of Kamikochi National Park and Shinhotaka Ropeway. We got what we paid for, but it suited our purpose. It is an aging hotel in need of a facelift and has nothing special to offer in terms of amenities, service or... More
