If you are in Montevideo, this hotel is about a 3 hour drive from the city. More people come from Buenos Aires because it is just across the river by ferry and then an hour drive. We arranged a car service from Montevideo with Lucia and Belen who took care of us every day.
This property is in the middle of a vineyard. The grapes are harvested for the nearby Narbona winery - which is worth a visit on it's own. The rooms are very large and many are two stories. They are almost a townhouse size. Our room faced the vineyard and the water beyond.
The pool is enormous and the staff take care of you. There is a pool bar and restaurant. Lucia and Jesus looked after us every day.
At the front desk, Belen and Lucia arranged wine tours for us to nearby vineyards.
In the main restaurant, Noel, Matias and Luis made sure everything was great.
I want to compliment the chef particularly. He knew we were staying for more than a week. He made a new egg dish for me every day. Where else would that happen? I was asked each morning if I wanted to try a new dish and it was always delicious.
Personal service at this hotel was fabulous. We would go back in a heartbeat.

Just gorgeous five star resort and the perfect weekend trip from BA! We found the property to be just beautiful and peaceful and loved the spa and indoor pool with jacuzzi. Super zen and tranquil plus they have bikes that allow one to discover the surrounding forest. The staff couldn’t have been more attentive and quick to respond to our questions. The bungalows are modern and quite large with a view of the river. Just stunning! Highly recommended if you need some spa and relaxing time!!!

Lovely hotel with a fabulous pool….we decided to stay an extra night because we loved the area. The guys played golf and we cycled to a couple wineries. We also ate at Narbona which was relatively good except for my one dish. The hotel has a good gym and River frontage

Food is terrible, terrible, terrible and there’s no service at all - get your own towels at the pool,
get your own drinks at meals and by pool, no one picking up towels or empty glasses at the pool. Resort overall is dated and I dare say our room was dangerous with stairs very close to the bed. The setting was beautiful but that’s absolutely all this place has. We were so ready to get out of here and I can’t believe how much we paid.

The hotel is really beautiful but it looks like the service quality and conservation dropped after it ended their partnership with Four Seasons and later with Hyatt. Employees were very polite, with good manner, but not in a sufficient number. Many details of bad conservation can be found.
Nevertheless, the sunset is unbelievably beautiful. It’s a must!

Dear Christian, Thank you for having taken the time to share your feedback following your recent stay with us. I am, terribly sorry however to see that your stay has been a less than perfect experience, and would like to assure you that your comments regarding your meal have been escalated internally. I do hope that in spite of the range of issues you mentioned, you would feel comfortable staying with us again in the future, and remain entirely at your disposal should you ever require any assistance at all with the making of future reservations. I stayed at this hotel a couple of years ago and it was fantastic, just as all of the other reviewers have stated. Unfortunately, our most recent visit was so horrifict that we didn´t even stay one night. At least the hotel helped get us out of the property, and back to the Four Seasons in BA, as quickly as possible.

For starters, the direct route to the hotel had been flooded, but our driver didn´t know about this (despite the rain having ended 24 hours earlier) until we were more than 3/4 of the way there. A one hour trip turned into three hours. What was so upsetting about this is that no one at the hotel bothered to offer anything close to a "sorry for the delay in your trip". Apparently, these delays are common so be prepared for a 1-3 hour trip from the ferry. In total, it took us 5 1/2 hours to get here from BA.

After the very chilly welcome at the front desk (better staff at a holiday inn), we were taken to a room completely filled with bugs and mosquitos. We had multiple bites (on our hands and faces) in the first 5 minutes of arriving in the room. The heated floor was broken, our sofa was oddly converted to a single bed (not requested) and dead bug stains were on the pillows. Definitely not up to Four Seasons standards.

Next stop was to the one open dining facility in the hotel (others were closed for private functions). The water was warm and cloudy, the bread on our club sandwich was terribly stale and the bacon was raw. Plus, the entire staff was preparing for the private party that would shut down the restaurant that night (ironing table clothes, clearing plates and silverware and worst of all, stoking the flames of an enormous fire for that night´s asado). Our lungs and eyes couldn´t take the smoke any longer and we left in disgust. Again, far from the standards of the Four Seasons.... not even up to the standards of a Hilton or Marriott.

I am writing this review from a "community room" in the hotel. It´s filled with screaming kids playing games on each of the room´s four computers. I had to wait 30 minutes to use the one I´m currently using.

If you like screaming, bored kids, loads of mosquitos, a very rude front desk staff and partially closed public areas, then this place is for you. If not, DO NOT COME HERE. Once you do, you are trapped! Save the fare for the boat ride and stay at the very wonderful Four Seasons in Buenos Aires!!

My husband & I just returned from a fabulous stay at the Four Seasons Carmelo. I am already looking for a way to return -- what an amazing resort!

We booked a bi-level suite as part of the spa package. What a great value -- we were treated to two spa treatements each during our visit in the incredible spa. The spa staff and facilities are A+ -- one of the best spas I have visited.

Our suite was beautiful, spacious and comfortable. Since the weather was cool during our visit (late autumn in South America), we spent a fair amount of time in our suite. We really enjoyed having the two levels and appreciated all of the luxurious touches.

The resort grounds are peaceful and beautiful. While we observed a few families with young children, the majority of guests were adults/couples during our stay. The resort seems a little quiet for kids -- this feels like more of an adult get-away to me. However, they do have a childrens play area that looked quite nice.

One of the highlights of our trip was a dinner at Narbona -- a winery about 10 minutes from the resort. Narbona is an intimate restaurant (about 6 tables) in a 100-year old winery.

We traveled to the Four Seasons via Buquebus (high speed ferry) from Buenos Aries to Colonia. The resort had reserved tickets for us in advance (we picked up our tickets at the ferry station). We were met by a Four Seasons van at the ferry station in Colonia -- the entire trip takes about 2 hours from Buenos Aries.

Certainly the best part of the Four Seasons Carmelo is the staff. We were always greeted by name throughout the resort grounds and treated like royalty in a very humble, respectful way. Every time we felt nothing else could be done to exceed our expectations, another staff member would delight us again.

This is a very special place and well worth the long trip. We will return!

Our vacations almost always involve urban escapes focused on museums, cultural events, shopping and dining. The Four Seasons name and the beautiful pictures of their resort in Carmelo swayed us this time, however, and we booked a three-night stay. What a great idea. We had a wonderful time and learned that resort vacations can be just as interesting, educational and fun as urban escapes.

If you choose the plane (instead of the boat) to get to the resort, the adventure in Carmelo actually begins in Buenos Aires. The fifteen-minute flight is both exciting and a bit nerve-racking, unless you’re accustomed to landing on a grass field. It’s also a great way to transition from the enormity of Buenos Aires to the middle-of-nowhere vibe of Carmelo. But don’t confuse the Uruguayan customs official for a porter (as our flightmates did) – he just might want to look through your luggage, so let him do it!

The resort is classic Four Seasons, with a mellow, Asian-influenced style that seems strangely at home in the middle of South America. It’s a beautiful place where the sounds are not car horns and buses, but the wind blowing through the pines and the rhythm of your life slowing down to a more relaxing pace. Once you’re accustomed to clear vistas with no buildings or development and calm nights with no traffic or sirens, you’ll wonder how you’re ever going to go home.

Unless you don’t like the outdoors (why would you come here then?), the best options here are the bungalows. The two-level suites are very nice, but the bungalows allow indoor/outdoor living and seem to fit the surroundings in a way that the suites just don’t capture. The square footage includes the biggest bathroom we’ve ever had in a hotel, an outdoor shower, a spacious bedroom and an outdoor sitting area with views toward the river. It really is paradise among the pines.

Despite its secluded location, activities abound: golfing, tennis, horseback riding, yoga exercise classes, and spa treatments. The hotel offers day trips to a local winery and the UNESCO World Heritage site of Colonia – well worth the time and money. We also thoroughly enjoyed a trip to the local restaurant/winery Finca Narbona for dinner.

The only negative we experienced was an incident involving money missing from our room that was not really dealt with by the management – a surprising misstep by a company that is normally tops in service. Otherwise, the service was very good although a bit too laid back.

If you’re worried you won’t have enough to do here, don’t be. If you’re worried you won’t enjoy the surroundings, don’t be. Just go. You won’t want to leave.

About Carmelo: A small rural town over River Las Vacas ( The cows) w/ 20 thousand inhab.( 15 thousand in Carmelo city) living on farming, winnerys and tourism. Major tourist attractions are:
a) Carmelo Four Seasons
b) Puerto Camacho and Club de Campo el Faro.
c) Restaurant "Narbona" from el Pacha Cantel: (A Argy that developed Puerto Camacho and the Club) thou expensive is a MUST.
e) A walk in the city
f) One hour from Colonia.

Highlights of the F. Seasons :
a) Location ( In front of the beautifull Uruguay river, ondulated sandy lands sorrounded by Eucaliptus forests, the superb Bungalows, are Imo the best choice for lodging.
b) The Spa, the Spa ! superb.
c) Service , excellent, pro and friendly.
d) Food was very good, we enjoyed alot the cooking classes with María Esperanza the Pattisier and her recipee for Alfajores.
e)Activities ( Water act. bikes, polo, golf, visits to close spots. A place you can go w/ kids

Best way to travel to Carmelo: La Cacciola fast boat from Tigre city leaving every day 8,30 am (after 2 hours croosing of the Rio de la Plata, you will be to Carmelo pier over Arroyo las Vacas). A Taxi should pick you up ( unless the hotel forgetts to pick you up as happened to us) . Cost by boat both ways U$S 55 per pax.

Taxis : Always hire private ones , the hotel doubles the fee.

Winnerys: There are a couple of winneys to visit. The Tannat kept in Oak might be a nice surprise to wine tasters...The Narbona restaurant sells Tannat botle for U$S 40 each. its (produced in their vineyards proceesed at Bodegas IRURTIA). The also produce their own cheeses.

Polo / Golf : Excellent proposals for fans . Polo clinics for U$S 50 per hour with Huber Robiralta (ex Susana Gimenez husband). The Golf field is amazing.

Bottom line: KUDOS for the Fours Seasons.. Excellent choice for 3/5 days of relax.

Usually I don't write reviews, despite being an avid reader of them, but after visiting Four Seasons resort in Carmelo, Uruguay, I felt compelled to share my experiences there.

The place is absolutely incredible - literally everything was perfect, starting from the lovely surroundings, a beautiful log cabin (they call it bi-level suite), magnificent food and super-friendly people. The people here definitely try to go out of their way to make you feel like royalty. We´ve stayed at a number of luxury hotels and resorts worldwide, including other Four Seasons properties, but have not seen anything at this level just yet.

Just as the previous poster, we've had dinner at the nearby winery and highly recommend it - it's a very enjoyable experience. Not much else to say, other than it's been an absolute blast and we would definitely come back here again.
