I almost cried when I had to bid farewell to the Katerina Saray. the place has a special atmosphere that only comes with lovely staff, kind smiles, a lovely breakfast, a mountain river and an imposing fortress overhead. The rooms are splendidly high Ottoman and you can revel in the red velvet and faux gold leaf of your bed and gilded ceiling. The hotel is discreetly set apart from the town centre, 10 minutes stroll along the river, which only emphasises its air of grandeur. The rates are very reasonable and you feel very gentrified in the country house - a former Russian imperial military hospital. I've booked for Christmas and New Year 2020 already to escape the masked ball of Christmas in Western Europe. They put on occasional garden parties with local musicians and light the braziers to warm the winter spirit. This place has to be experienced. It's unique.

We stayed in Kars for two nights, and had a delightful time with the hotel as our base. The hotel’s location was perfect for us – it’s in the shadow of the Kars citadel/fortress, only a few hundred meters down a nice walkway from a lovely square with restaurants, with the major Ataturk Road just beyond that. There is a part of the university system just past the hotel in the other direction, so there are often students walking past the hotel. And with all that said, it’s a delightfully quiet location. In the evening, the sound of the river that’s 20m from the hotel helps lull you to sleep, and the mature trees along the bank provide nice shade during the day to sit outside and read with a cup of cai.

The staff are wonderful, and tremendously helpful. The Russian influence on the architecture is matched well by the furniture and rooms – it feels ornate yet also warmly worn in. The local breakfast is delicious and plentiful, and served in a large room of large, grand tables and chairs. The room was warm, the WiFi was solid enough, and it helped set us up for a really lovely visit to the city. Would highly recommend.

One last note – we visited Ani on our trip, and like other folks we were lucky to have Celil as our host/guide. I am not always a fan of guided tours, but would strongly recommend anyone to reach out to him if you want to learn both a breadth and depth of history about Kars, about the communities and groups in this region, and about Ani. He has been researching Ani for decades, and his work helped set Ani as a UNESCO world heritage site. He went beyond what we could have expected from a guide, and made a wonderful visit an absolute treasure.

The building itself was nice, reminded me of those dark Russian buildings.
Our room was fine but very, very stinky from bleach. I have asthma and was dying inside. There was only one window with the mosquito net so it took forever to air the smell out.
We were surprised to hear that they don’t have a restaurant, according to Google they do, so we just walked into town to eat. They do have little tables by the river for drinks only. Otherwise no food.
Breakfast was good.
My concern was that I contacted this property many times prior to arriving and never received a reply. When we were checking in they looked surprised to see us and asked if we have a reservation… When I showed them the Expedia printout they asked how long ago I booked lol. It was like 4 months prior! Does it even matter?
We did get a room but staff looked so uninterested that I wouldn’t have been surprised if they sent us away.
Overall, not many tourists come this way and it shows.

We visited the hotel in September 2020 and were very pleased with the quality of service and the attention of the hotel staff. We would like to express our special gratitude to a girl Shahika from Turkmenistan for her responsiveness and help in solving any issues.

A Haramulade hotel. It contains traces of history in every corner. Everyone from the bellboy to the waiter floor attendant to the security guard are doing their best to make you comfortable from the first time they see you. Receptionist AKİF BEY, I would like to thank you specifically for your interest in the information you have given about the environment. Hope to see you again in four months.

The hotel has a quiet location, by the side of a small river and very close to the city's castle. The decoration and the air of the entire hotel and each room are that or a long gone era, about a century ago. It is clean and well maintained. We only stayed a night here and had a room on the second floor. The room was O.K. and the buffet breakfast had a limited number of not very appealing choices.

Our walk in the historical places around the hotel was very nice. In the evening, you can spend hours by the fire in the gardens by the river.
The employees were very helpful and our conversations were very entertaining. I can't find words to say about breakfast, I will miss it so much.
