Luckily enough to have been there and seen the celebrations for the 100 year anniversary of Turkey, we had a lovely family holiday at Side Star Resort. From the moment we arrived and received such a warm and informative welcome, we knew we'd have a good time (there is always that little bit of trepidation based on the odd bad review you read). Would recommend this hotel to anyone wanting a lovely, hassle-free, family holiday Pros: > Large, clean room - it wasn't a great view (front of hotel) with a tiny balcony but we're not the family that spends too much time in a room on holiday so for our needs it was great. Enough room in the evenings for us to get ready without being on top of each other and relatively comfortable beds. Cant ask for more for the price > Basic toiletries provided - wouldn't have bothered packing ours if I had known as we're not fussy about what products we use as long as they clean us. It was a nice touch > Mini bar restocked daily as part of all inclusive plan (fabulous!) > Ability to book a la carte meals in restaurants (Turkish, Thai, Mexican - 1 meal at each included in all inclusive package). Nice change to buffet & really good food / service > Overnight buffet 9pm - 7am - brilliant for late arrivals (we did not get to our hotel until 11pm and I was a little worried with 2 tired and hungry kids but this was perfect to grab a quick snack) > Daily beach towel exchange - such a brilliant idea (and when collected they are lovely and warm so good for changing at the end of the day [5 - 7pm] when it's a bit cooler and wrapping the kids up in them when wet from the pool) rather than towels wet from the day > Great maid service - room towels changed daily as required, beds made daily and can ask for sheets to be changed if necessary (bedding made into swans etc was a nice touch) > Majority of things are included in all inclusive and there was never really a moment where you could not get a drink / something to eat - just make sure you are aware of the timings for availability and you can can't go wrong. > Buffet - in terms of choice of food you cannot fault it, our kids tried so many new things over the week due to having the food there and available to see and try (see cons below) > Pool bar - this was by far our favourite area - we did not actually visit the main buffet for lunch as the 'snacks' (which I would consider full on meals e.g. pizza, chips, jacket potatoes etc.) were great. We particularly loved the crepe lady and wished we had had time to thank personally for the probably 30 crepes she made for us during our stay :-) > Beach within walking distance with sunbeds and activities centre (we did Parasailing and Speed Boat Tour). Beach itself is lovely and the sea is just beautiful - warm and clear. There is also a bar at the beach that does snacks during certain times > Large pool area and good slides (although my kids tell me they wanted more obviously). The lifeguard manning the slides deserves a shout out as he is brilliant with the kids and keeps the slides open as long as he can so they can get their last goes (opening times are 10 - 12pm and 2 - 5pm) > Good little selection of shops in the hotel > Bus service to Manavgat and Side centre right outside the hotel (2 euros per person each way) - although I would advise against the journey with young children on market day as that is absolute carnage! Bus drivers are helpful though in making sure you get off in the right place and know where to get the bus back and which one it is > The staff - they are just brilliant - friendly & helpful. We had a few issues with language barrier but most of the staff understood basic English (which I always find amazing, considering I don't know a word of Turkish). There were activities for both younger and teenager children (although our children did not take part, it was great to have this as an option and you can tell the entertainment staff work really hard on these activities to keep the kids entertained) > They hotel are really good at asking for feedback so please do complete these forms where Cons: > Buffet - if it's not your thing the sheer volume of people and food out can be a bit overwhelming. It was nice to go later but then you miss out on seats for entertainment (see below). Not our favourite part but we knew what we were getting as part of the package and there was a lot of choice > Lack of seating in evenings for entertainment - especially if like us you are not regimented in getting to the buffet / evening meal early and finding your seats. It meant we probably missed out on what looked like some great entertainment evenings because we did not want to stand the entire evening > Sunbeds - despite the usual signage to NOT reserve sunbeds with towels, EVERYONE does it. We learnt from our mistake on day 1 when we made our way to the pool to find it difficult to get sunbeds around 10am - although have to say the pool attendant was super helpful in finding us some. It was not that busy but I was down at the pool by 8am every day we were by the pool after that to get sunbeds which was usually early enough and I enjoyed by 2 hours peaceful reading in the quiet! Slightly frustrating when some people did not even show until midday - staff should just remove towels that are clearly not with anyone in my opinion (not sure how I would have coped in a busy summer period) > Main pool was FREEZING! I suffer from Raynaud's and struggled to stay in any length of time despite it being 27/28 degrees outside. Kids were absolutely fine in it though. > Location of nearby ATM to get cash if required - there is a small shopping area about 10 mins walk from the hotel where there is an ATM but if you just need the odd Euro to get the bus etc. it's a bit of a trek > Not necessarily about the hotel and you are visiting a Muslim country, but if you don't need to get up at 6am to pray, then take some ear plugs, as the call to prayer chant will wake you up (we avoided having the windows open at night but thankfully the room was cool enough) > Ice cream - great to be included in the all inclusive (11am - 4pm) BUT it is basically a freezer with limited selection of shop bought ice cream i.e. Cornetto, Feast, Twister (especially if you go towards the end of the session). We were expecting proper ice cream in a cone > The Turks don't do cakes / desserts (unless it's crepes, waffles or baklava). This is probably a personal thing but the cakes we had were too dry and any mousse / cheesecake type desserts were too gelatinous / wet Tips: > Take Euros not necessarily just Turkish Lira - whilst Lira is accepted, most of the prices are in Euros & it appears they prefer payment in euros where possible and this would have been easier if we had known before > Book a la carte restaurants on arrival if only staying for a week (can be booked 10 -12pm each day except Thursdays in reception). We went on our 2nd day and nearly struggled to get in before the end of our stay and ended up doing them on consecutive nights > Tipping is expected for pretty much every service so be prepared for that > The hotel has a lot of cats wandering around which are very friendly - they will jump up for snuggles! If you love cats (which we do) it was lovely to see and get to know them throughout the week. They do roam free and you can buy cat food from reception. If you don't like cats bear this in mind > Timings are not all exactly correct - e.g. the buffet advertised as starting at 7pm actually opened at 6.30pm. Very minor but get the sense that the timings are set for main summer and are just not adjusted on the information packs > Definitely go into Side - we had a lovely walk around the old town to the Temple of Apollo (also can see that if you wanted a break from the all inclusive it would be a lovely place to eat) > Manavgat waterfall - this is beautiful but it is not necessarily as extravagant as I would have imagined. However, it was a nice little trip for an hour and there are a nice little array of bars / shops there too (NB: you have to pay to see it). You can catch a bus from Manavgat town centre to the waterfall > Things not included in all inclusive package - popcorn / candy floss from the cart in the evenings and the arcade games (which includes bowling) (We did not use the spa so cannot comment on that but it did look lovely)…
