The Royal Thalassa Monastir garners appreciation for its welcoming service and a wealth of amenities, including diverse dining and a spa, although the gym incurs extra costs. While its beachfront setting wins over many guests, some express concerns over remote location and spotty WiFi. Mixed reviews emerge regarding cleanliness and upkeep; travelers commend the hotel's value but caution against inconsistent cleanliness and dated decor. The atmosphere is described as generally lackluster, with entertainment offerings often deemed unvaried.

1 - On arrival, only one staff member was available to receive an entourage of 14 people. We were given no explanation of how the hotel worked.

2 - At check-in, we were handed a sheet with the hotel's rules and conditions without further explanation.

3 - Except for one buffet employee - Mr Mongi Guermazi - all the hotel staff we dealt with showed a lack of pride and rigour in their duties. We saw everything: dirty tablecloths that weren't changed, only turned upside down; cutlery that fell to the floor and was put back on the tables; dirty or already used napkins; inattentiveness and several order changes...;

4 - The room cleaning service didn't meet our expectations either. Except for a single day when the room was entirely cleaned and the beds made, we had days when the cleaning was only done at our request, at reception. There were towels to be changed, shampoo and shower gel to be replaced, water to be replaced, beds to be made and rooms to be vacuumed.

The sheets were never changed and had several dirt stains;

5 - The open bar had poor sanitary conditions, exposed to customers. Plastic cups were washed and reused in front of us, in the same stall where the staff washed their hands. The water used to wash the glasses was never changed. The drinks that were part of the all-inclusive regime were always served without ice;

6 - As for the ‘All Inclusive’ regime, this was the first time we had to pay a deposit for beach towels. To make matters worse, the deposit was paid in euros, but the amount was returned in Tunisian dinars. As you know, this is a loss of value, since €1 corresponds to around 3.33 dinars. If it's paid in euros, it should be returned in euros;

7 - The open bar and pool area do not have access to the hotel's wi-fi. They only serve drinks, often without ice. From 9 pm there is nothing to eat in the hotel;

8 - All the sun loungers by the pool were ‘reserved’ before breakfast. The hotel has a notice warning that towels are not allowed on the sun loungers for 45 minutes. However, we saw towels every day, all day long, without them ever being removed. Often without the presence of these people in the pool for several hours of the day.

9 - The all-inclusive regime also doesn't include services such as the spa, the indoor pool and the hotel gym.

I have visited this hotel many times already, greeted like family. Wonderful manager Anis, this is a man who knows Russian in A! It is he who answers queries , if you write to the hotel mail about arrival , this time upgraded the category from standard , to suite with sea view , room 480 . Dear Anis is very grateful! Reading the previous review, and just feels like you were relaxing in different hotels, the towels in the room are always 3 pieces different, by the pool the seats were always, cleaning while , are on the beach. Tablecloths are snow white and after each service they are changed . Chic Thalasso Center . If you take the program for 4/5 days it comes out significantly cheaper than paying every day.
I want to come back again!

Room ok if a bit tired. We had the best cleaner who done a great job every day, always giving us fresh towels and sheets. We started tipping on day two (after withdrawing dinar from the ATM at Monastir airport) and she started leaving us even more extra water and made designs on our beds with towels/sheets/pj's. Our patio door didn't lock but we were on the top floor and weren't that concerned as someone would have to be Spiderman to scale up and get in.

Staff in restaurant were a bit hit and miss with some not being very attentive. Ala (a young 20 year old lad) was the opposite, hard working and done his best to give you the best experience possible. He made sure our wine and water was filled up even before we'd finished. He cleared our plates away promptly and as soon as he saw us approaching made sure he had a table for us. The food is typical of an all inclusive holiday - you are going to get some of the same foods every day or every couple of days. We found there was always a choice for us. The fresh made omelettes and flatbreads were so good, for that reason there was always queues at these stations which is only to be expected.

We booked Mona and chose the international menu - food was good and there was lots of it. Tip - don't eat all the starter as the main was huge!

The local spirits were disgusting. The gin didn't even taste like gin. The only semi palatable thing was vodka and even then it wasn't great. If you wanted to pay for Absolut Vodka it was 40 dinar (£10) per drink. The cocktails again were pretty woeful. The lack of plastic cups/glasses was a bit frustrating and only having one bar staff caused big queues which wasn't great.

The pool was lovely and clean as was the surrounding area. As usual not enough sunbeds and we had to get up at 5.30/6.00am to get one!

I have no words for the entertainment! We heard singers (from a distance) a couple of nights, it was so bad I thought it was karaoke. There didn't appear to be anything else on at any other times and we found ourselves reading in bed by 10pm!

There is no "promenade" to walk along at the front. We like walking and found ourselves having to walk along the side of the main road which had vehicles whizzing past at speed. There was not a day went by that we weren't constantly shouted at, tooted at and pestered by the local males. It was a bit much.

As soon as you venture out your hotel grounds you are pestered by taxis - numerous times. However saying no thank you meant they usually left you alone.

All in all a decent holiday but definitely not 5 star.

The food was awful, I’m a vegetarian and I couldn’t eat much, so much cross contamination. Nothing was labelled and when unsure the workers didn’t understand to help me, even when using google translate to communicate. I was very hungry a lot of the holiday. Even most of the salad had fish or meat in it. My boyfriend eats almost anything and he was disgusted by the food, and always repetitive meals, pink chicken almost everyday too. We made friends with 5 other couples who all said the same about the food!
The drinks were so watered down and the alcohol didn’t taste like what you asked for, no matter how much you drank it didn’t affect you. If they forgot what you asked for they just gave you what they wanted, again the other couples found this too. We would often do rounds for another couple and a few of the waiters got funny ordering more than one drink per person, we had to point to our friends to be allowed (even thought we were all inclusive)

Made to feel uncomfortable when I walked anywhere without my boyfriend by most male workers.
We booked for a double bed and got two single beds and were made to keep coming back until finally changed after a few days. Once changed the shower would go hot and cold, but burning hot to freezing! There was no long mirror and no big light so hard to get ready for the evening.
In the morning cleaners would knock but not wait and come straight in or if we said no come in anyway. Walked in on my boyfriend naked, while changing. Did the same to me while changing too! This was multiple times over our week stay. Air con barely worked, but we would keep bathroom door shut to keep the room cooler and the cleaners would leave it open, but we wouldn’t know until the end of the day when we came up. Our door didn’t shut properly, you had to shut it properly yourself and we came up quite often and the cleaner had left it not shut properly, which again we didn’t know until we came up to get ready in the evening, meaning anyone could have walked into the room and had access to our stuff, including passports, bank cards and money etc.
The cleaners didn’t change the bedding at all just made the bed. They did leave fresh towels everyday.

Rubbish to no entertainment, a man with a keyboard, a singer who wasn’t great, or just music, there was a creepy entertainment man who was using and selling drugs on the job, he made a lot of women feel uncomfortable.
To get a decent service you needed to tip them otherwise they weren’t interested in helping you most of the time.

The hotel itself looked nice by appearance, with the size, the pool and the spa.
The pool was the best bit of it all! It was so big and quite deep, so people never really got in each others way! There was a private beach too that was nice but the sea was filled with plastic and other kinds of rubbish :(

It's the worst hotel I've ever had for the last 20 years. In order:
-Everything is worn and worn to the brim. We're put in room 251 - a two-bedroom room, but mud and trash are everywhere. From the toiletries, one piece of soap and several cans of shampoo with a cloudy content. Cleaning on a strange schedule - morning pick-up of towels in the afternoon bring new ones, but can forget. Now attention - to book a sunbed by the pool you have to get up at 5am, or better at 4:45... by 7am everything is taken, the sunbeds are all broken, the paint has hatched. In the lobby, some of the upholstery on the sofas has burst and foam is sticking out. Nutrition is a separate topic - level 3* in Egypt. Everything's either raw or overcooked. Salads include tomato salad, cucumber salad and cucumber and tomato salads. Complaints at the reception are pretended to be either misunderstood or ignored. The beach is a narrow strip of shore strewn with garbage and cigarette butts. Anyway, if you don't want to ruin your vacation, stay away from this hotel.

I was there for a week and i suggest everyone to find another location.
The rooms are decent considering how old the hotel is, but the service and the location get 0.
First issue we had was with the rooms. We where a group of people and some of the group paid extra to receive a room with sea view - but they received the worst possible room with a view of the back of the hotel, the person from the reception didn't cared that they reserved a room with sea view.
We had the all inclusive option. The food options was missing most of the days. Had 3 out of 7 days where i decided to eat past because nothing else was ok.
We had issues with the staff also. We where suppose to receive a bottle of water each day in our room, but we had days where that didn't happened. Each day they will come in the morning, take our towels and get new ones 4-5 hours later so if you wanted to take a shower in the middle of the day(lets say before going to lunch, no towel to use).
A lot of options where marked as included in price but when we got there most of them required additional pay or required a deposit that needed to be paid in there currency or if you used euro/dollars you would receive at the end there currency.
The beach was small, not enough places for everyone that was staying in that hotel.
We had included on a la cart diner that we had to book it in advance and select the menu in advance also, but when we got there them menu we received was not the same that we selected.
Overall i suggest you find another hotel to go to in Tunis

I want to share my impressions about this hotel . We were 15.08 , went to this hotel since there were only positive reviews, but actually there are a lot of cons. I'll start in order: the room was nice, large, but the bathroom had worms and the sink was packed. The cleaning of the room was poor, the linen was already dirty when we stopped by, we asked it to be changed, towels were taken every day but not always brought to the room clean , went to the reception twice to bring towels to the room , never waited , had to take without permission in the corridor . The area is not large, one large pool. Food (I'm not demanding for food, I just want it to taste good) the choice was small, every day is the same , and how for me everything was tasteless .Liked only breakfast . Another downside is that you need to ask the waiter for drinks and wait for him to pour (sprite,fanta ,) alcohol has been diluted . Alcohol was given in plastic cups (the cups were washed in the sink where and rags were rinsed ) after I saw it more drinks in the bar on the beach we did not take . No animation at all, I'd say no animation at all. Live music was always played in the evenings. And only one plus I would put is this sea, the sea was warm, the shore was big and not deep, the clear sea was only two days. Then there were waves and they brought dirt and jellyfish. In general I do not recommend this hotel .

The hotel is located in a beautiful setting overlooking the beach with a beautiful outdoor swimming pool, which is why I gave it 2 stars.

For the rest, we feel that there is no more investment and that management is trying to make savings at the expense of vacationers.

The hotel is aging and poorly maintained, crumbling cornices and paint, stained carpets, broken tiles, etc.

The air conditioning hasn't worked all week, the hotel is permanently dark (I saw staff scanning with a flashlight, you even have to activate your phone to return to your room, day or night). at night..) and the unheated indoor swimming pool to save electricity.
In the evening, the access ramps to the hotel pool side are plunged into darkness.

The restoration is catastrophic: that’s really the downside.
The food is in the form of all-you-can-eat buffets but there is little variety and you get the feeling that the food is low-end.
All "all inclusive" alcohols including local alcohols are mixed with water.

There is a shortage of staff; therefore, you wait all the time.
If you arrive mid-service to eat, the servers are overwhelmed. You are obliged to clear the table and wait for someone to bring you cutlery, glasses and napkins (you are eating on the previous vacationer's dirt).
The drinks are by the glass you have to call the waiter to be served but as they are overwhelmed, you do not drink or go to queue at the pool bar.
Hygiene is very limited, the plates and cutlery are really dirty, greasy and the placemats are not washed or changed... once right side up, once upside down...
On the Thalasso side, the staff is pleasant, but still no maintenance, half of the water jets and bubblers do not work; the bathrobes provided are torn even though this service is chargeable!
Having already stayed in around ten hotels in Tunisia, this is really the only one I will never return to.

Hotel with staff who are very attentive to customers. We particularly appreciated the lady at reception who did her utmost to ensure a successful room change. The restaurant staff is really nice with a real sense of service, especially Fahti and Mo Saa (Mohamed) who made our meals excellent moments of conviviality.
A big thank you to the beach attendants who always helped us with the installation!
For thalassotherapy, superb place. The indoor pool is surprisingly less than 30 degrees. Towels at the economy…. You cannot change your bathrobe when it is wet following certain treatments….

Hubby and I have just returned home from staying at the Royal Thalasso Monastir. The hotel is more a 3/3.5 star hotel definitely not 5 as advertised. The reception entrance, pool area and bar at reception are nice but the rest of the hotel is dated. The bar staff, waiters and animation staff are all very friendly and can’t do enough for you however we found the reception staff to be very dismissive.

There appears to be lots of cleaning going on but nothing is really very clean. Our room was only swept on our last day and all that was really done was towels, toilet roll and water replenished and the beds made.

I didn’t visit the spa once I was told that the robes and towels other guests received hadn’t been washed. However they did say the treatments they received were really good. Also if you want to use the gym there is a charge of 30 TD per person per day.

Our patio doors didn’t lock so reported it at reception and they advised they would send someone to look at it (they never did) however on chatting to other guests they had the same problem so basically it seems things don’t get fixed when broken. It wasn’t a major issue for us as we were on the 4th floor.

The food was absolutely fine. There was plenty of choice. There was usually a couple of fish dishes, two choices of meat generally always beef and a rotation of chicken or turkey, freshly made pizza and pasta and a couple of Tunisian dishes, lots of different salads and mini cakes (which were lovely). There is an a la carte restaurant you can book but it is very small and books up very quickly unfortunately we didn’t manage to get a reservation for it.

The all inclusive drinks aren’t that great. However the bar just off reception has an extensive menu of cocktails and premium drinks that you can pay for.

There is no rep at this hotel however you can book trips via reception or there is a rep from Tunisian Travel Services that visits the hotel between 9-11 who you can book trips through. We did the 2 day Sahara trip which was great. Two very long days but it was definitely worth it.

The hotel doesn’t have a cash machine to withdraw money however it does exchange money at the reception.

The hotel doesn’t have anything in the vicinity however there is a train station about a 10 mins walk away where you can get the train to either Sousse or Monastir and the cost of tickets is very cheap. We went to Monastir and it was only 0.55 TD per person each way. Monastir is such a beautiful town lots of things to see and we went to My Cocoon for lunch and the food was fabulous with really big portions and really cheap.

The WiFi at the hotel is ok. In the rooms and reception it is fine but at the pool area the signal comes and goes.

Whilst we have enjoyed our Tunisian adventure I wouldn’t come back to this hotel and would definitely do more research on the areas before booking up again.

Yes, you are entitled to one free visit to the ala carte restaurant - the one in the hotel and the one on the beach as well, but for the second one - only on certain days. The people at the reception will explain the details. You can book jet skis, parasailing and other water sports on the beach. The staff speaks French and English. Communication was easy and we got along well. Very nice and kind people.
