Lovely restaurant with views over the River kwai. A great choice for our monthly get together. Most of us had the special spare ribs which were to die for. The wine was good quality and reasonably priced. Both Evelien and Joe were great hosts and gave us a guided tour of some of the rooms. For those of you lucky enough to stay here I guarantee you will not be disappointed.
I can't add much to the hundreds of glowing reviews already posted. The highlight, really, is the staff. Our hosts and the staff were a joy, helpful and attentive, personable and thoughtful, flexible, welcoming, helpful, responsive, easy to communicate with. One example: my wife had a birthday during our stay, and they arranged for a special dessert for her (which was as beautiful as it was delicious) which far exceeded my expectations and made her very, very happy. As for the facility: Our suite was comfortable and spotless. The pool is fantastic. The views of the river are beautiful. The restaurant is superb. The grounds are lovely, with new things to see and enjoy every time you look around. Even the other guests were friendly and warm. Things that are unique, which I particularly loved: the dogs and cats were a special treat, and were really sweet. Taking a boat from the resort up the river to the famous bridge, which I thought was an absolute highlight and well worth doing. The tranquility of the grounds and the amazing attention to detail in caring for them. While there were ample opportunities to interact with other guests and staff, you always have the ability to find a quiet, private place if you choose, whether by the river, on a hammock on the grounds, or in your cottage. The massage service was outstanding and on the grounds. The pace is easy, comfortable, just right. I enjoyed the experience very, very much, more than almost every other hotel or resort experience I have ever had. Thank you to the wonderful staff and to Evelien and Djo for a memorable, perfect time away from the hustle-bustle of Bangkok.…
My husband and I just had another wonderful 1 week stay at the Oriental Kwai Resort over Christmas 2020. We thought we’d post a review of the top 10 reasons that keep us coming back. The list is in no particular order, we just hope this additional information is useful to you. Everything we are writing here is from our personal experience. In our reviews we always try to list the good and bad as we experience it, but in this case, we honestly don’t have any negatives. We would definitely recommend Oriental Kwai Resort to a friend (and have) and happily recommend to you as well. Enjoy :) 1. Awards: At time of writing, we note that the Resort is listed as the #1 Traveller’s Choice on Trip Advisor for the Kanchanaburi area and has received annual Trip Advisor awards for many years in a row (and having visited the Resort many times now to escape the hustle and bustle of Bangkok, we can attest that this honour is well earned, deserved and to this day maintained). Hey, am I allowed to give a personal award from my husband and I to the Resort entitled 2020 Award for the most fabulous resort stay?! 2. They take Covid19 Seriously: Our experience was that the Resort has taken the threat of COVID19 seriously and during these hard and somewhat scary times they not only provided a superb experience parallel to our pre-Covid visits but also an experience wherein we felt that our health and safety was prioritized with owners and resort staff practicing and enforcing best practices for a healthy and safe environment for us to enjoy. 3. Location! Location! Location!: The Resort is peacefully located on the famous River Kwai in the tranquil country-side of Kanchanaburi (yet close to everything as we name in point 10 below). 4. Family Owned & Operated: This is a family owned and operated quality resort. There is no doubt in our minds that the husband-wife team run their resort with their hearts ultimately providing guests with a personal approach that will make your stay memorable (many people return, including us for this reason). They are hands on, visible daily and truly care. Immaculate spacious cottages and grounds, comfortable cottages with ice cold air conditioning, warm showers and seamless wifi, well trained polite professional staff... the list goes on. 5. Perfect English, Thai and Dutch for Bookings and Questions: Easy to book direct (and/or ask questions) as you will get someone on the other end that speaks perfect English, Thai and Dutch. You can call, email or LINE with no worries about language barriers. Personally we have always used email to communicate and owners respond very quickly. 6. Hidden Gem: Escape the busy lifestyle of a big city to this hidden gem of a resort that is less than a 3 hour drive from Bangkok (the Resort will even arrange an affordable private ride for you if you so desire). 7. Great Prices: The prices of the cottages, food, drink and services at the Resort are all more than fairly priced, you will come away feeling like you got the better end of the deal! Hello, major bonus! 8. Delicious Eats & Drinks: Speaking of food and drink, uhm, so delicious... there is not a thing on the menu that I would not order again. Just when we think we have had the best thing, well the next thing becomes the new best thing. 9. Yummy Breakfast Included: Included in the room rate is a delicious full menu breakfast; I won’t ruin the deliciousness that awaits when you visit by telling you all the options, suffice it to say yum yum yum. 10. So Much to Do: Lots for everyone of all ages to do... from nature lovers, animal lovers, history lovers, golf lovers to the adventurous to the do nothing whatsoever lovers! The Resort staff are more than willing and kind about arranging and/or assisting with sightseeing and time spending plans... - Spend time at the resort just hanging out in or by the pool, sitting on your cottage balcony, taking a walk through the luscious well maintained green space and gardens, playing in the playground or badminton court, having an onsite spa treatment, visiting the resident super friendly loving goats, dogs and cats, taking advantage of the free wifi available all over the resort, watching a DVD from the huge collection of movies the Resort offers for free or even borrowing a book to read from their onsite book shelf/library; - Take a long tail boat to town, it will pick you up right from the resort shoreline; - Visit the impressive Hellfire Pass & Memorial Museum, the Thai Burma Railway Center, the war cemetery and/or the famous Bridge over the River Kwai (have you seen the movie?!); - Spend a day at one of the two local Elephant Sanctuaries (these are humane sanctuaries for rescued elephants who are now living their best lives being spoiled and well fed with no riding and no bullhooking or other gross treatment); - Swim at Erawan National Park & Waterfalls and/or explore the Huay Maekamin Waterfalls; - Hike/climb up to visit Tham Phatat Cave; - Play golf (Kanchanaburi has many golf courses in the area and Djo, one of the owners plays so we’re sure he’d be happy to advise on good, better and best courses); - Cycle through the local villages & markets (rental bikes are available at the Resort); - Admire some beautiful temples: Wat Tham Suea & Wat Ban, Wat Mettatham & Wat Tham Phu Wa; - Get your adventure on with SUP boarding and paddle down the River Kwai; and/or - Take in a move at the Movie Theater in town or pick up forgotten supplies at the Big C, Tesco Lotus or stores of the like. Lastly, you will not find the Oriental Kwai Resort on the online booking machines, another example of how the Resort keeps their personal touch and attention to detail with guests. Also, it is our opinion, that this is how this family owned and operated business is able to keep their resort experience real for us guests as well as maintaining affordability so that we, the guests, can be offered this type of amazing Resort experience for a fair and affordable price. Thank you Oriental Kwai Resort for making our stay all that it was for us! We had a great time and look forward to seeing you again soon :)…
Oriental Kwai Resort has everything you want: Beautiful location with great view, a good restaurant, lovely decorated and clean rooms, friendly staff, nice swimmingpool, beautiful garden and some things for kids. Highly recommended!
This was our 3rd time staying at Oriental Kwai Resort and each stay has been fantastic! The grounds are beautiful with colorful flowers and trees all around the property. The rooms are very bright, clean and comfortable… one of our favorite things about the room is that the rollaway beds for our two kids are real beds that are very comfortable. The restaurant is also our favorite restaurant in Kanchanaburi. The food is excellent and the prices are very reasonable both for the food and wine. The hosts/owners, as well as, the entire staff are so friendly and welcoming. Being only 3 hours from Bangkok, it is the perfect weekend escape from the city. We can't wait to go back!
