This place has been serving backpackers for the last 20 years or so and offers a wonderful setting for people on a budget. The rooms are generally pretty basic but then again where else can you get a room with a bathroom for under 300 Bhart. The gardens are wonder a view of the river would not be out of place if this was a boutique hotel. Add to this the great restaurant and the great team you have everything you require to make your time in Kanchanaburi an enjoyable one

it's a super cheap place to stay in kanchanaburi and the quality you get for the price is more than fair. it's not luxurious, but for this price you cannot expect it. the rooms are basic, but clean and nice. you can get a room with a terrace which is very nice. they have a big garden and a nice patio restaurant.

My husband & I stayed one night at Jolly Frog/Smiley Frog. It was the most affordable hostel we have stayed at yet on our trip, but was the nicest & best location. We stayed in a fan-cooled private room with a view of the courtyard and river. The room was spacious with a large bed & private bathroom. The room was plenty cool with the fan & windows, and if you keep the bathroom door shut (as the sign suggests), no mosquitos. The front porch had nice sitting areas to enjoy the peaceful area and views of the river. The courtyard area faces the river with many picnic tables, lounge chairs, and a hammock. We even went down to the dock to watch the sunset over the river. There are rooms directly over the river on piers which have front row access to the views. The rooms & bathrooms are very clean and the staff is very welcoming. The lodging is connected to a restaurant, which has a good variety of food at a very affordable price. There are also massages and tours offered, which we didn't use (not enough time), but the massages looked to be the most affordable we've seen in our month in Thailand. The location is in the backpacker area, so lots of restaurants and bars, though the Frog is set off the main street for a bit quieter atmosphere. It was a 30 minute walk from the bus station, though many taxi trucks would be glad to take you there for a small fare. WiFi is very good in the room and restaurant. We didn't use the shower, but I believe there are room with cold showers and hot showers. The only slight negative is the stairs going up to the rooms and the dock. They need a little updating as they are a little unsteady and well-weathered. But we could see they are working to update and maintain the property, as they were working on some brick work in the courtyard while we were there. So I'm sure it's on the project list. Overall, loved this little place. We would recommend and stay again!

My wife and I have been staying here since November 2016. We'd been to Kachanaburi a number of times but didn't know about the Jolly Frog (now renamed Smily Frog) as it's set back and hidden from the main tourist strip. I heard that it has a lovely garden and a superior view over the river Kwai so we tried it. The Smily Frog has is undergoing a transformation. The old dilapidated rooms are being demolished and replaced by brand new clean rooms with brand new beds and fittings. The Garden The gardens are beautiful and right on the river Kwai. Kachanaburi is renowned as being the hottest province in Thailand. I've had to retreat to the garden and lay under the trees there all day at times when it was so hot I couldn't walk more than a few meters outside the hotel without having a complete meltdown. There are Raft rooms right on the river facing a pontoon that you can swim and fish from or just wallow and relax. The Cats There used to be many cats who lived there but most have been found homes now. A few people who posted reviews were critical of the cats there but for me it's charming and shows that the owners are kind to animals. When I see a hotel or restaurant with cats I'm assured that there are no rats. The Restaurant Known by locals as the best value for money and clean. The pizzas are big and only 200 baht or AUD$8. Location Right on the river Kwai and in the middle of the Main tourist street. Room Prices Raft rooms 230 baht up from 180 baht Single Rooms 150 baht Double rooms 250 baht Public Toilet has no soap which is concerning if you need to use it and are eating in the restaurant. Location: Five stars I feel sorry for travellers who stay in ivory towers away from the river Kwai where you wouldn't know you were staying on the beautiful river Kwai surrounded by mountains.

Got the first room when you enter the location. Which has a nice view on the river. But thats about it. The room had very bad to no WiFi. The ceiling is about to fall down because cats are running over it all night long. I mean the ceiling lamps where shaking because of the fighting cats. The stuff has been nice tho and i'm pretty sure this place was lit back in the days. But this was long ago. And if you think "but it's cheap"... you'll find cheaper and better once just across the street.

This really supports the saying 'you get what you pay for'. I had the first room when you enter the grounds and my patio had a great view of a wall. Of course the gardens and river views are nice but opening my room door was another story. With poor lighting and dark sheets I should have been suspicious of the cleanliness. It seems this place has lived long past it's glory days. You can find cheaper, cleaner options around.

the place is 90% frequented by people who are freely allowed to do drugs, smoking and getting dangerously drunk, everywhere, anytime. stealing is daily commonplace. the management prefers not to get involved, resulting that the place is actually run by drunkards and drug users. the rooms are as described by many reviews wifi only at reception desk. for only 50 baht more one can find decent guesthouses, with better facilities and safer environment.

A bad holiday spent in this guest house. The room was dirty and unhealthy. There is no wifi available in the bedrooms and the Jolly Frog doesn't provide towels. The staff is only there to sell excursions to guests.

Very good value for money. Kind and friendly staff. Basic rooms but clean. Beautiful well maintained garden with the river Kwai at the bottom of it. Great for sunset it also has hammocks to relax on. The food menu is vast. So much to choose from. Great value and in my opinion the best food I had tasted in Thailand. Stayed there 25 years ago and it is still as good now as it was then. It is one of the older backpackers so it has some wear and tare but has been well maintained. Run by a wonderful German lady and her two Thai sons. If you do not stay there. I would recommend going to eat there.
