The intention of The Legend is to give Guests a true taste of nature in the North of Thailand, whilst providing the best standard of Accommodation and Service possible. The Legend has been built as much as possible within the natural environment and many of the trees and shrubs are very old - much older than the Hotel. During the building process every attempt was made to ensure that as much as possible of the natural environment was preserved - which to some degree accounts for what some may regard as the rather idiosyncratic layout of the Resort. Dear BlondeScouse Dear Guests make a voluntary decision whether or not to travel to the North of Thailand during the “Haze” Season and there is nothing that can be achieved by us reporting the situation regarding the quality of the air in our specific location on a daily basis, as there is absolutely nothing we can do to influence it and it may not reflect the situation 1Km away. I agree entirely with you regarding the quality of the air and wish that the Thai Government could be more effective in dealing with the situation, but since the majority of the impactful burning is taking place in neighbouring countries a real solution lies in eliciting the support of the Governments of those neighbouring countries, although we have of course made frequent representations to the appropriate authorities. It is correct that the river along which the Resort is built acts substantially to clear the air for us and the photographs of the sky at the Resort were sent to you with the disclaimer that they represented the current situation. Advising Guests to still travel but spend their entire holiday closeted in their Hotel room does not represent a viable option so Guests are free to make their own judgment on whether to travel to the North of Thailand during the “Haze” and you chose to do so. Rather than “ignorance” I think the stance of the Hotel represents the only possible position. The only currently available alternative course of action during the “Haze” would be to close the Hotel rather than keeping it open during what is for us a very low occupancy and loss making period. We could then save a substantial expense by laying off all the Staff and letting them and their families fend for themselves. Instead, we choose to keep the Hotel open, largely as a gesture of support for the Team Members here, many of whom have worked at the Property since its opening and who have no other source of income for themselves and their families. Since you wrote several Emails to us in advance of your planned arrival expressing your concern about the Haze, you were quite rightly, given the option to cancel your trip, with a full refund, or rebook for alternative dates, so to choose to continue to travel and then “down mark” the Hotel, substantially as a result of your dissatisfaction with your experience regarding the “Haze” seems a little illogical. At no stage did I pretend that there was “not an issue” with the “Haze” and the precise transcript of some of the relevant Email responses follows: "Of course, if there are real concerns it is always possible to buy a mask locally or perhaps even bring one with you." "Although I do have to say, that I have not received even a mention of “haze” from any Guest, and certainly no complaints." "As mentioned previously, during the “burning season” the situation can vary from day to day depending upon the prevailing meteorological situation, but the photos give a truthful “real time” indication of the situation today." "We do not have a “Reader” for the Hotel or Air purifiers in the rooms but I can honestly say, that, apart from yourself of course, not a single Guest has expressed concern at the situation either verbally or in writing during, prior to or after their stay." "Since this is an environmental and meteorological issue, we have no control over the situation and are unable to exert any influence at all apart from to express our concern to the local authorities and the Tourism Authority of Thailand. I am afraid there is unlikely to be any positive response from either party since the situation is also beyond their control, resulting substantially from burning in nearby countries." Equally illogical appears to be the constant demands for an AQI Reader and Air Purifiers in the rooms as neither will make one jot of difference to the experience of the Guest once they leave their room – which is the primary purpose of travelling to Chiang Rai. Since you appeared to be in a negative frame of mind regarding the “Haze” we come in for what I feel are a number of less than fair criticisms. I agree entirely with you regarding the exploitation of Elephants and any other animals and that is why we have brochures advertising and promoting the Sanctuary of Elephant Valley on display in our Lobby and we do not visibly promote Elephant Rides. They are available, unadvertised, from the Tour Desk as an option for Guests, since a surprising number of Guests do still ask, and it is not for us as Hoteliers to expect that the preferences of our Guests will always correspond with our own. A bit like the availability of cigarettes in a Convenience Store. Hopefully the time will come when nobody is interested in taking an Elephant ride. Since you sent numerous Emails prior to your visit expressing your concern about the “Haze” you were given the opportunity to cancel without charge or rebook for another date, as the air quality is beyond our control. On reflection, perhaps it would have been best if you had, since you appear to be judging the Hotel substantially through the lens of an Environmental issue which is totally outside of our control. Thankfully readers may recognize some remarks for what they are. Whilst everyone knows the best price for an Excursion is unlikely to be obtained in a Hotel Lobby, the prices offered by the Tour Desk in our Lobby are a long way from being ten times what one would pay down town or the Tour Desk would very quickly be out of business, and I feel it highly unlikely that the lady at Elephant Valley was able to see for no more than 2 or 3 feet. That is, to put it mildly, a highly debatable assertion on her behalf if it was in daylight. I really am sorry about the “Haze” as there is no doubt that during the “Haze period” it has the potential, for some, to detract from the enjoyment of a wonderful ”back to nature” experience and I really am sorry that it impacted negatively upon your holiday experience although I can truthfully say that no other Guest has mentioned any concerns either to myself or any Team Member. Indeed, recently we even had a visit to our Property from a Group of representatives from a prominent Embassy and even they did not expect that we would be able to do anything to mitigate the effects of the “Haze”. I fully understand and empathize with your concern regarding the “Haze”. Sending me numerous Emails prior to arrival about an issue over which I had no control, you were given the opportunity to cancel without charge or change your dates and on reflection it would probably have been best if you had availed yourself of either of those options. Nevertheless, I hope that you and your mother enjoyed some aspects of your stay.

Guest comments are important too us as it is only by seeing ourselves as our Guests see us that we are able to improve. I am glad that you found the style and ambiance of the Resort to your liking and that you enjoyed your stay with us, although I have noted your comments regarding the food. This is always a little difficult as opinions on food are necessarily generally subjective but we are currently working on plans to upgrade the Breakfast Buffet - and this will involve the inclusion of more foods that are appealing particularly to European Guests, cheeses for example. With regard to the Thai food it is a little more difficult as some Guests regard our Thai food as not authentic enough and others as too spicy, so we are trying to find ways to reach a happy compromise on this point.
