Me and my boyfriend stayed at Baan rub aroon for one week and did not regret it at all! The hostel had a wonderful"home"-feeling to it which was partially done by the beautiful garden and the interior. But most of all it was Nong (the owner) and the rest of the staff who made our stay feel like home away from home. Everyone was so kind and helpful, always making sure that we were having a good time in Chiang Rai. The hostel is located about a 10-15 minute walk from the clocktower, which for us was central enough. The only negative thing was that people liked to ride their scooters right on the road passing by the house. So bring earplugs if you are sensitive to those types of noises at night. If you are looking for a calm, cosy, welcoming, friendly and helpful hostel, look no further this is it! Kind regards, Sofia and Charlie

We enjoyed our stay very much. I think there’s room for improvement as far as renovations go but they know how to make you feel at home. The cleaning lady is a lovely and attentive woman, what a sweetie pie! And the owner called to check on our experience, which was a nice touch.

This was my second stay at Baan Rub Aroon and my husband's third (ten years ago). After three experiences, I think it's safe to say that I would not consider staying anywhere else in Chiang Rai. Nong is a wonderful host who seems to value her guests as people, gently offering suggestions for restaurants, day trips, and extra courtesies as a matter of course. She is also more than willing to help with calling taxis or arranging drivers. She oversees the morning breakfast, cooked and served outside, and each day was happy to tweak the menu to make the options more varied, even making my husband French toast twice.... made his day! Breakfast outside under the trees is a great start to the day... the density of birdlife provides a musical backdrop. We stayed in one of the discreet units this time and on the last visit, which I prefer for the lovely separation, privacy, and garden setting. The rooms are large with high ceilings and the bathrooms are enormous. We had a resident gecko in ours, and we very much enjoyed his antics. The guesthouse is located on the western edge of the downtown area beyond the traffic and downtown crowds, very peaceful (a nearby school is lively in the morning hours!). and within easy walking distance from the Clock Tower, the hospital and Th. Jet Yod where the cheap hostels and guesthouses mingle with massage parlors and bars and the sidewalks are crowded with backpackers. Beyond the guesthouse and up the hill is the Wat Phra That Doi Chom Thong and the adjacent city pillar, a renovated cosmological map surrounding the historic city "navel". A long city block away is the very beautiful temple complex of Wat Phra Kaew with its own emerald Buddha figure and a small, exquisite museum of Buddha figures and antiquities. Wat Phra Singh is another couple of blocks east past the hospital. There, in the secondary temple, dazzling murals cover the walls and tell the story of the creation and travel of a Buddha sculpture. Returning to our room at Baan Rub Aroon in the afternoon after a morning of such activities always feels like sanctuary, a great place to cool down and decompress. Although the rooms do not have mini-fridges, there is a common-use kitchen available through the back door with cooking facilities and a refrigerator where we stored fruit and Chang beer. If we ever were to become longer term guests, it would be a good opportunity to cook for ourselves. We highly recommend Baan Rub Aroon for travelers who prefer something set apart from the main stream tourist district.

Nong is the most wonderful host, this lovely is well located, walking distance to the night market & clock tower. What made the stay brilliant was Nong's help with planning my time in Chiang rai, arranging things & also arranging a wonderful Thai breakfast. She's always smiling & so helpful. I stayed in a private room which was brilliant. Can't fault my stay here.
