The Sands Khao Lak by Katathani stands out for its excellent location near beaches, restaurants, and shops, and guests often commend the hotel for its friendly service and family-friendly atmosphere. While the rooms are spacious, some guests note a musty smell, outdated decor, and inadequate soundproofing. Brilliant overall stay and nothing not to like! Check in was efficient and that’s how it stayed!

A large hotel but extensive grounds mean you never feel crowded. Children’s pool area looked fantastic but then so is the adult pool, if adults only.

The grounds are immaculately maintained and everything is so up together, including the cleaning of the pools, in fact everywhere.

All staff with no exception were friendly, smiley and so helpful. A huge credit to the hotel and management.

A big shoutout to the bell boys. As elderly with walking difficulties we pre arranged with the hotel to have golf cart access to the top of the road. The guys were always available with a smile to deliver us to the top. First class service and a big thank you from both of us.

Ate in the Talay restaurant a few lunches and whereas a bit more expensive food was very good and worth paying the extra.

Breakfast was very adequate in both the adult area and family restaurant. A very minor criticism would be to vary the food a bit?

Room was very good, if a little tired, although not surprising with the occupancy levels. Cleaning of the rooms was very efficient.

Hotel is in a great location, with many very good restaurants at the top of the hill. We particularly liked Go Pong (just brilliant simple food), Jai and P’ann with Pam’s well worth the taxi ride. She organises it and just a little bit more class and finesse. Also enjoyed Nai Mueang, a Michelin guide restaurant a 200 THB taxi ride away.

Overall a first class holiday and highly recommend to all.

Family hotel with beautiful grounds, rooms fresh, clean. It was very nice that there are several slides on the grounds for children and adults. The most important and favorite entertainment is the "lazy river". It's run twice a day for an hour and a half. The coaster runs until 5.30pm. Breakfast is good, but before that rested in another hotel below the valuable category and there breakfast was more varied. But basically, you won't stay hungry. For lunch they ordered pizza in the room, very good and the price is adequate, even considering the markup on room service. Also on site you can taste unusual ice cream in marshmallow. Nice kids' playground. I really liked the location of the hotel. Nearby is a long street with cafes, massage parlours and shops. For families with children it is very convenient that you can take things to laundry outside the hotel for a little money. Although the hotel also has washing and drying machines. On the downside: there is construction on the property, which the hotel does not warn about. Initially, we booked a semi-luxury with access to the pool, where you could hear the noise from the construction site very strongly and smell the paint. We booked a pool room to spend time outside the room and didn't want to hear banging and drilling and stuff. After our claim, the hotel offered two dinners as compensation, but we wanted quiet, not free dinners. Then the hotel offered to cancel Reservation and refund, which we agreed to, but first we had to find a new hotel, which would cause us inconvenience. In the end, the hotel agreed to change our hull and offered a room of the category above. Although they initially said there were no rooms available. In another room (family room with access to the pool) overlooked the children's pool with slides and no construction could be heard. Another downside: the first junior suite overlooks the water body and the other building, and between the rooms is a wooden fence, because of this you can clearly see the neighbors opposite and on the sides. We liked the family room better if we knew those nuances, we'd have booked it right away. The price difference is insignificant. They waited a very long time for their luggage (35 minutes). There were a lot of arrivals and departures, so there was a shortage of staff.

Excellent hotel, good location, greenery, large well-kept area with several pools, the pools are clean. There are several slides for children, although they work somehow inconsistently, you can’t go and ride them all at once. There is a spa and massage on the street, the massage is more expensive than in a neighboring hotel. Fitness center, children's club, store with the necessary supplies. The rooms are clean, large, a little shabby, but not critical. The room has everything you need, bathrobes, slippers, umbrellas, ironing board and iron, safe, hygiene items. Towels were changed every day, there were enough beach towels. You could ask for the beds to be made softer - they added a feather bed; in the extra space it was a little hard for children to drink water in glass bottles, a launderette, if there wasn’t enough, you could ask for more. The beach is nearby, there are no sun loungers on the beach, but the walk to the beach is 10 meters. You can’t feel the ebb and flow of the tides. The food is delicious, we had it for breakfast, it was enough for us, there really weren’t any specific Thai fruits except dragon eyes. If dinner at the hotel is quite expensive, you can either go out to Mainroad or along the beach in different directions you will find cafes or restaurants, we found several very good ones.. In the evenings there is live music or some kind of program, unobtrusively.
In general, everything is good, the staff is friendly, I would especially like to note the hotel’s app - it’s very convenient, if you need something, for example, we needed a fumigator, we ordered through the app and it was delivered in 10 minutes, you can also order food to your room. You don’t know what to even wish for, maybe cut an exit in the hedge to a direct path to the beach so that you can walk closer and not go far, there’s nothing else you can think of...

Just stayed at this hotel and overall the entire resort is beautiful, has all the amenities that you could want - adults only pool, kids pool and waterpark, swim up bars, beach front, kids club, taxi service, and much more.

However, I was so let down by how rude a lot of the bar/restaurant staff members were. Multiple times I ordered food and drinks and got a look from a bar man/woman as if I was annoying them by asking them to do their job.
At busy periods they were visibly stressed and it was obvious that they didn’t want to help. At one stage, I witnessed a barman at the coconut bar “shooing” away a woman who was trying to ask for a replacement cutlery set.
I have been to Thailand multiple times and this is not the typical attitude of the Thai people who in my opinion are generally the nicest people in the world.

The food for breakfast and lunch also left a lot to be desired. We fed our 2 year old lunch every day out of handiness (too hot to try and push the pram up the hill and down the Main Street in the middle of the day with 33 degree heat) but myself and my husband didn’t eat a bite of lunch after day 1 as frankly it was not one bit nice.

Otherwise, the cleaners were mediocre at best, our room was never cleaned properly, toothpaste marks and stains left on the mirror and sink bowl; handprint marks on the patio and balcony glass (I was here with my 2 year old daughter).
Bags of rubbish that I had gathered myself (as the room bin was tiny) were just left and not disposed of by the cleaners.

Absolutely not a 5 star resort, I expected much better.

Dear Madam/Sir, Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. We are pleased to hear that you appreciated the resort’s amenities and facilities, including our pools, beachfront location, and services. Dear hotel management,

we, as a family, recently completed our second stay at your hotel. Although we chose your establishment based on our experiences four years ago, we regret to inform you that under the current conditions we would not consider coming a third time. We would like to share with you a few points that bothered us during our stay:

Firstly, we noticed that there seemed to be no investment in the maintenance and modernization of the room furnishings since our last visit. In particular, the hinges of the cabinets in our room were broken, which affected the use and left a negative impression. In addition, the entertainment system, especially the TV, seemed outdated to us. In this day and age, where streaming services such as Netflix are ubiquitous, many hotels offer their guests the option of logging into their personal accounts. This is a service that we missed and that we believe would be a significant improvement.

Secondly, we would like to express our frustration with the daily reservation of beach loungers in the beach and pool area. Despite our advice to the staff, unfortunately no consistent action was taken here. Guests were able to reserve loungers for several hours without this being handled appropriately. Our suggestion would be to not put beach towels in the rooms, but to have them collected and returned in person from a distribution point at the pool or beach. This could help alleviate the lounger reservation problem.

In addition, we found the selection on the lunch menu in all of the hotel's restaurants to be quite limited. To increase culinary variety and provide guests with more options, we suggest setting up a "soup station". This could function similarly to the breakfast buffet and would be a welcome change for guests.

Finally, we would like to express our disappointment with the housekeeping service. Despite our efforts to bring the problem to the attention of management, our room was unfortunately not cleaned thoroughly. Every day we could still see traces of the previous day in the bathtub and under the bed we found a cookie that appeared to have been left by a previous guest. This is not up to the standard we expect from your hotel and has significantly affected our overall impression.

In summary, we hope you will consider our feedback as constructive criticism and take action to improve the points we have raised. We value your hotel and would love to return in the future, but unfortunately under the current circumstances this is not possible. We look forward to your response and hope to see positive changes on our next visit.

We rested in this hotel in March as a family of 4, 2 children and 2 adults. We found a tired room, the curtains were torn, the furniture was peeling from humidity, the smell in the bathroom was worse (sweetness, mold). Cleaning was not daily, but every other time... the hotel management needs to work on these issues. The area is large, two restaurants, 1 bistro cafe, the food is delicious and everything is clean! The male chef in the restaurant by the sea is a great fellow, when his shift - everything is very tasty 👍 hotel for a relaxing family holiday 🙌🏻 first coastline, but all in stones, you need to walk literally 100-150 meters along the beach to the right and there are excellent places for bathing.

Wow, wow, wow!!! Unbelievable! Amazing! We will definitely be coming back and upgrading our experience.

We came during the low season and the resort was still busy which is a testament to the resort and the area. We booked for 4 nights just so we can check out the area as well as the resort. We've previously stayed in Phuket and decided to add on Khao Lak for this trip and not only did it not disappoint, it exceeded our expectations and them some. From the moment we arrived to the resort, we recieved the customary Thai welcome. The staff are so humble, warm and welcoming. The vibe was just amazing from the outset.

The design of the hotel literally covers everyone's tastes. Couples, honeymooners, families young and old to older generation of people looking for a quiet and relaxing holiday.

As busy as it is, there are 2 buffet breakfast locations next to each other. 1 reserved for families and a quieter one for adults only which is a brilliant idea. There is a huge selection of food so it it should cater to nearly everyone, truly.

There is a store with supplies next to reception and the prices are very reasonable especially considering it's part of the resort. It has everything. Clothing, footwear, swimming gear, drinks (alcohol including popular brands) ice cream, snack etc.

Self service washing and drying machines for 50 baht each which is again an amazing idea for families in my opinion.

We booked 2 connecting rooms on the ground floor next to the mango bar so we had great access to the main beach front pool, the breakfast buffet, the talay restaurant (have left an amazing review there - check it out). The rooms were amazing truly and housekeeping was really well done.

As busy as the resort was, the 3 large pool areas (including 2 swim up bars) make sure that you have more than ample space to enjoy a swim. Again there is a kids/family pool which is really well designed that adults thoughts enjoyed it as much as the children of all ages. The bistro and swim up bar combination is perfect as you can eat and drink all day poolside.

I could go on and on about this resort but I'll leave it at that. Probably the easiest 5 star review I've ever given (along with the Mandarava Resort in Karon Beach). It's probably also the most detailed. You definitely won't regret coming here.

Fingers crossed we'll be back next year 🙏 God bless you all

We have recently stayed at The Sands for 4 nights. The hotel is great for families with lots to keep the children entertained. The lazy river and fish feeding was definitely the highlight.
There was lots of choice at breakfast and everything was replenished quickly.
We only ate once at lunchtime but the food was very reasonably priced as was the hotel shop.
The gym at the hotel was one of the best I have had on holiday. Lots of equipment to choose from and felt very clean and well maintained.
This hotel is in the perfect location for many trips, and with several restaurants located right outside you really don’t need to venture far.
The rooms feel very modern and spacious and with the sliding doors separating the living room from the bedroom gives you the chance to move around once the children are sleeping. This hotel is very family orientated and I would highly recommend.

The Sands was perfect for us - a family with small children, but also travelling with elderly grandparents. The pool and grounds are wonderful and the resort is very conveniently located within easy walking distance to many restaurants, bars and shops. Honestly, there is everything you could want and more. The only minor criticisms are that the room decor in the lagoon-side Sands room felt a little worn and not quite upto 5-star standard, and housekeeping was inconsistent in the level of cleaning and replenishment of amenities. In the case of the latter, however, they were very quick to bring more towels, toilet paper, water etc. on request. Overall, our stay exceeded expectations and in terms of all-round satisfaction and value for money, having stayed at many properties all over Thailand, I'd say The Sands was the best.

We have just returned from the Sand Resort Khao Lak. The resort is very large and has beautifully kept grounds, with a large lake with Koi Carp in and a few water monitor lizards, which are feed twice a day. The staff are amazing, vey kind and considerate.
We went as a couple and to be honest if I have taken the time to read up more about the resort I would have realised that this resort is 80% more suited to couples with children. The resort caters extremely well for families. the staff have realised that older couples do not want to sit in a large restaurant with children and babies, so there was a separate restaurant for couples for Breakfast but not for evening meals.
I have never seen so many baby strollers out side a restaurant before. We mainly went to the main road for meals in the evenings which suited us, and luckily for us we have a ground floor room opposite the adult only pool (another good thing) unfortunately the adult pool was hardly used as it is quite shallow which make the water as hot as a bath so not at all refreshing. My grandchildren would have loved this resort with it facilities and water park for children, but unfortunately not really suited to us.
On another note the sea could be very rough with big waves, I was dismayed to see parent with tiny babies and toddlers going in the sea and twice I saw mum and baby wash out with a big wave, if it hadn't been for other parents on the beach I dread to think what would have happened, and even when the red flag was flying which it was for two days whilst we were there the parents still took the youngsters in the sea. We also saw a few people rushing out of the sea with Jelly fish stings.
I would highly recommend this resort to familes, but remind them of the changing sea conditions.
