We chose this hotel for one night before starting on a safari. It was recommended by lots of people and we were not disappointed - the hotel staff were so friendly and helpful throughout our stay. The dinner buffet and breakfast were top quality with lots of vegetarian choices and the waiting staff were very attentive to anything we needed. The rooms were so big and the bathroom was spacious as well. The decoration in our room had an animal theme which was lovely. We had a double bedroom overlooking the back of the hotel so we were not disturbed by any noise. The dining room, lobby and sitting area were really clean and decorated nicely in an African theme. We didn’t get a chance to use the swimming pool and wished we could have stayed for longer. I would have no hesitation in staying at this beautiful hotel again.
Asante Sana

Excerpt from Great-Aunt Lulabelle's letter, dated August 17, 1919
"We disembarked from the steamer in Mombasa with great relief, and made the long and very dusty trip to Arusha, only to arrive at the most divine oasis, The African Tulip. I'm writing by the pool, enjoying a plate of exotic canapes and an ice cold gin fizz. The bouganvilla is alive with the most darling birds. It's ever so distracting. I can hear the men at the bar - I'm sure we will be called into the dining room shortly, so I will try to write quickly and describe this for you. You enter the premises through a gate and are immediately transported into private gardens. While our bags were whisked away, we were escorted into a beautiful lounge area and offered a cool towel and refreshing drinks. The lounge opens into a gorgeously appointed dining room, which flows out to the pool area. Our rooms are ever so comfortable, with cool, refreshing air and a large, ensuite washroom. The window overlooks the pool and gardens. I believe I will separate from our tour and enjoy these environs for the next month, and will join up with them again later. Much love my dearest, and more to come in the next letter."
Of course this is an entirely made up letter, but when you walk into The African Tulip you feel transported back in time in the most delightful way. The food is excellent, the rooms are lovely, and the public areas are magical.

We loved African Tulip. We spent one night prior to our safari and one night after our safari. The staff was friendly efficient and very attentive. They assisted us in checking in for our early morning flight as I was experiencing difficulty getting it done. The service was very personalised and they treated us like family. Meals were very tasty and filling. The bedrooms very spacious , the beds very comfy and we had six pillows which was perfect for us. The bathrooms are very spacious too and they even put a large supply of qtips and cotton balls! They also have coffee and tea in the rooms. Instant hot water for tea at your finger tips.

Gorgeous hotel! Felt very upscale, staff were wonderful, restaurant was great. The pool is lovely for relaxing, and we enjoyed snacks at the poolside bar. We are a group of three relatives and opted for a triple room, which had three twin beds available, along with a lovely balcony. Incredibly spacious bathroom and shower. The hot and cold water dispenser in the room was especially useful. Would be an especially nice way to unwind in comfort after a long plane ride.

We only stayed for 1 night at the hotel before our safari but enjoyed it very much. The rooms were very spacious and comfortable and it was very close to the center of Arusha city. The filtered water dispenser is a great idea to reduce plastic waste. Breakfast was a good spread with good choices and the staff were all very helpful.

During Christmas eve , the hotel had a special dinner , guitarist and even we played a raffle . There were gifts for each of us in our rooms. On Christmas day , the hotel put some souvenirs on our tables. It was breathtaking!
The rooms are sparkling clean with a visit by the attendants twice a day .
The swimming pool is a reasonable size and safe for children and those new or moderate swimmers.
The food was delicious and was a great variety. Food orders placed with the hotel were received quickly .
As a big family of 13 guests , we thoroughly enjoyed our stay and look forward to coming back.

We stayed in the African Tulip hotel prior to our trek up Mount Kilimanjaro, and then post trek/pre-safari, with a stop over on our final day to collect bags/clean-up.
The rooms were all very nice, clean, and quite comfortable.
The staff are all extremely friendly, helpful, and very accommodating.
Meals were terrific, the breakfast buffet was delicious - with an omelet station!
They were able to securely store our extra bags of safari gear while we went on a one week Kilimanjaro trek, and then they securely stored all of our trekking gear while we were on Safari.
We didn't use the pool, but it looked very nice.
The next time I'm in Arusha I'll be back to the African Tulip!!

This hotel is located in the Heart of Arusha, only a few minutes drive from the central clock tower in the city. The hotel is a mix of modern and traditional with African and western decor. The rooms are clean and spacious and relatively modern with modern showers and bathrooms. The staff are friendly and the service was amazing. One of the hotel managers was very accommodating, bringing my wife complimentary food during dinner as she was still hungry. I would recommend this for anyone staying in Arusha whether they are staying to explore the city or as a stop before the head on their safari.

Having stayed at this hotel back in 2011 it was nice to come back and visit it again. It was a bit of a deja vu being assigned the same room I had 13 years ago! The rooms are very spacious with a large comfortable bed, window seat, desk & seating area. The bathroom is large holding a sink with plenty of counter space, a tub and a walk in shower that still leaks! There weren't a lot of other guests during the 4 days I was there because it was low season but as before the staff all provided excellent service both at the front desk and in the restaurant where the food was good. Please note there is no elevator in the hotel. The hotel is Indian owned and what lost it 2 stars from my review was the Indian manager who I found kind of creepy. He was constantly asking me how everything was and not one of those many times did he sound genuinely like he cared. But what really made me angry is the evening I was having dinner in the restaurant ( I was the only patron) and having this manager yell at & berate one of the restaurant staff right in front of me. I was mortified! Firstly that he would do such a thing in front of a guest but more importantly the horrible demeaning way he spoke to this girl. It was all in English so I was able to understand everything and it was all over something minor like asking for a day off. Very unprofessional and the event and this manager really dampened the rest of my stay here.

I found that Tanzania people like the US dollars dated 2006 or newer. When we arrived in Tanzania we had to pay $100 per person cash in US dollars for an entry Visa. I heard UK people only had to pay $50. Go figure.
There are more places to choose from in the Arusha area.
