In the historic port of Galle, Amangalla sits within the ramparts of the 17th-century Galle Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Named after the Sanskrit word for 'peace' and galla, the Sinhalese word for the town of Galle, the resort reveals the Fort's daily activities and its rich legacy. Offering views of the resort's 200-year-old gardens and of the Fort and harbour beyond, Amangalla provides for the leisurely exploration of this historic trading port and the surrounding countryside.

While all Aman properties are unique, this lovely hotel occupies an historic building in Galle fort. Everything is within easy walking distance and the hotel is charming. Rooms are comfortably appointed and modern yet colonial in feel. The restaurant and bar are terrific and the service was so personal. We loved our stay.

This grand hotel takes one's breath away with it's colonial ambience, abundance of antiques, fabulous rooms and very attentive staff. It was magical to sit on our balcony each morning sipping coffee and watching the monkeys play in the trees in the lush garden below. The thoughtful gifts that adorned our pillows each night are testament to the commitment this hotel has to providing it's guests with lasting memories. Thank you Dammika for being a superb butler.

This was our fourth hotel on our trip and we chose it because I’d been there 24 years before and enjoyed it then but wanted to see what it was like now it has been renovated by the aman group. The main entrance, lounge/bar and dinning room haven’t changed much and still brought back memories, lovely colonial furniture and high ceilings with fans. We went for a really good suite with garden views which is in the new wing and was lovely.....huge four poster, wooden floors, terrace great bathroom and shower etc. I mean, we loved this hotel for so many reasons but the staff here are so so sweet and genuinely care. You know , Sri Lanka has really had a tough time of it with the war, the tsunami and now the recent bombing in Colombo ! Every time they have to recover slowly and it has taken its toll on tourism every time ... it was explained to us that business had been bad many hotels had had to let a lot of loyal employees go but the aman had kept them all on , which they were very very grateful for and showed it. The food was great and they made us a super special romantic dinner on a private terrace with candles and the whole works . You can just walk out of the hotel and there are small streets full of restaurants of every kind shops and bars. When we left the hotel, every member of staff came outside to say goodbye which made us a bit tearful 😢

The history of the Amangalla, is the colonial history of Galle Fort. Formerly the Dutch military HQ, you feel as if you are staying in someone’s comfortable and very gracious home, and this is due to the very warm and welcoming staff. The Garden room felt like an apartment with huge windows and a sitting room. The location is perfect, and the service was excellent. We signed up for the Ayurvedic package which was a very generous programme. All inclusive spa treatments massages for both, Ayurvedic breakfast and dinner, afternoon teas. It elevated this hotel stay to a holistic resort. Our tours, day trips and schedules for treatments were managed perfectly by Hashita, who was exceptional. Low occupancies in Sri Lanka means that this is of the the best deals at any Aman hotel right now, and Galle is charming.

I had a quick two night stay at the magnificent Amangalla at the beginning of September I first visited Galle in 2011 and spent a night at the lovely Galle Fort Hotel, having dined at Amangalla the one night I was there, I knew it was somewhere I wanted to return and stay. Having stayed at several Aman resorts over the years, I must say Amangalla does not disappoint. Hotel interiors, ambience and above all the service are exceptional. I must make special mention of my extremely dedicated butler ‘Navin’ here, who took care of me during my stay. I can’t recommend this beautiful hotel enough. Thank you Navin and Amangalla team for making my trip so memorable. Justin Brewer
