"Historical" to say the least ! We are located 52 Leynbaan Street in a XVII century Portuguese Colonial House a few steps away from the beach, inside 3 km of circular remparts. The Fort was then modified by the Dutch and the British. "Leynbaan street" means "ropes street" in Dutch. Here several family generations were making coconut ropes for the ships in the small harbour nearby. Our house is one of the most significant, with its specific shape and backyard so usefull when there was no city drainage... but that only the beginning of the story ! This Colonial House was renovated in 2008 by the UNESCO FOUNDATION (see the plate in our photo album), then set up as a Family Boutique Hotel (LE JARDIN DU FORT) and a Gourmet Restaurant (PUPPETS Restaurant & Café) by the current owner from Sri Lanka. Inside the premises an impressive collection of thirty antique Puppets and some masks are ready for Puppets Shows twice a year. They come from Ambalangoda a city nearby famous across Sri Lanka for their shows. These cultural events unfortunately belong to the past but our Puppets shows are like a revival for a night from time to time. From its exceptional ratings LE JARDIN DU FORT is recognised as one of the most fancy and comfortable in Galle area, ideal for couples, individuals and families. PUPPETS Restaurant & Cafe is serving Gourmet dishes using Sri Lankan Ingredients, albeit not only, with subtle techniques brought by the Owner and the Chef herself, inspired from French and Thai cuisines, and Sri Lankan of course. About LE JARDIN DU FORT Guests reports : "Best location in the Fort", near the beach and the lively streets while hidden in a very quiet road. The "very friendly atmosphere" and "exceptional welcoming owners and staff" makes it unique, and the "fancy deco with a French touch" catches the eye. It is also "very clean, and mattresses and showers are excellent". Generosity being the key word we welcome all guests with a refreshing drink and we are happy to share our secret tips on Galle Fort's best beach, shops, restaurants. We are also happy to tell you more on Sri Lanka and Galle Fort's history, or even give cooking classes on request. About PUPPETS Restaurant & Café customers report : "Their PUPPETS Fusion Restaurant is serving the most delicate dishes I had on the island as a Sri Lankan, based on the traditional local meals and ingredients". "Their Chef is very creative, and with a subtle palate !". Also "... and more important for foreigners like us : it is not over spicy and you can feel an incredible variety of savours". We speak English, Sinhalese, and French and we intend to make your stay in Galle Fort unforgettable !

From the moment we arrived to the moment we left, the property and service met all our expectations, indeed exceeded them. This hotel is superbly decorated and furnished, is highly comfortable and is staffed by a team that pay attention to detail and serve with genuine warmth and a pleasure in what they do. Loved the room, loved the quality, the location and the general ambience. In short, faultless. We’ll be back - one day.

Le Jardin du Fort is not a 5* hotel in the classic sense but it has all the things that you need for comfort and enjoyment of an accommodation while being different and attractive in a distinctly unique way. Our room in what was once an old house was “romantically” decorated with lacy curtains around a four poster bed but that bed was extremely comfortable, the room had A/c and fan and the ensuite was modern and very good. The hotel is small and has kept some original features like the old doors and window shutters, as well as an eclectic array of delightful decorations and indoor gardens.
The staff are friendly and helpful and the ethos is towards being green and eco aware.
The French breakfast, with crispy croissants, is the best I’ve had in our whole time in SL.
We loved our stay here and the location inside the fort is great for exploring this fascinating old colonial part of Galle. A lot of the old buildings now house vibrant cafes and shops and you can easily spend a day wandering around the winding streets.
NB the hotel is located on a narrow street so don’t expect a sea view! That’s found when you walk around the wall of the fort.

We ate lunch at the café which offers tables at the front of the hotel. The service was friendly, the drinks were fine, but the food was dry, overcooked and almost inedible. In an area which offers plenty of eating options I would not recommend trying this one.

You had Srilankan Roties, with sambol and onions confits. And you said "it is not the way they are in India" Sure... You are in Sri Lanka. Leaving in Sri Lanka for years I can tell these they are definitely like Sri Lankan do them. Probably better (at least less dry since we incorporate small pieces of green vegetables which is not always the case, since in the country they often minimise their cost (not mentioning the sambol and onions confits we add around to eat with the Roties, making them quite soft actually) I am not saying you should like them. But we found strange your remark about Sri Lankan roties not being like Indian roties. At leat will we inform the Staff about being cautious and inform them when Indians order Roties. Best

1. The room is exceptionally average. Very very tiny rooms Extremely poor ventilation and sunlight. Good for those who like dark and dingy rooms or those who haven't lived in better hotels.
2. Staff is PARTIAL to white people. Numerous requests to get food for myself disregarded while white people are immediately served. This is not just my imagination. I saw it on several occasions.
3. Food is so average, There are better restaurants in the Fort area.
4. No water bottles provided.

We found much better hotels in the Fort Galle area.

You have already put a review on 29 Dec under 766arvindk (to which we refer readers since there is interesting info there about your behaviour) - Your intention is clearly to harm since it is based on fake - not to say mean - basis as we will show : 1. You say : The room is exceptionally average. Very very tiny rooms Extremely poor ventilation and sunlight. Good for those who like dark and dingy rooms or those who haven't lived in better hotels. ANSWER : You stayed in our Family Room : over 40m2 ... if you call it small... With the "Rolls Royce" of A/C if I can say (super quality A/C), and fan. And super nicely decorated according to probably 99% Guests (read reviews) -> a big lie then :) 2. You say : Staff is PARTIAL to white people. Numerous requests to get food for myself disregarded while white people are immediately served. This is not just my imagination. I saw it on several occasions. ANSWER : "on several occasions" ? really ? Where you here so long and so much ? Hopefully it is like you don't believe it yourself, feeling the need to specify "this is not just my imagination" . Anyway if there is a mixed team and society in Galle we belong to it for sure. So it is a very low attack, showing your intention to harm. 3. You say : Food is so average, There are better restaurants in the Fort area. ANSWER : As I said you already wrote a review on 29 Dec 2019 under 766arvindk, where you say that fodd was good ! ... Almost funny. If we need a last evidence of your lies there it is... 4. You say : No water bottles provided. We found much better hotels in the Fort Galle area. ANSWER : Not only we provide water bottles in each room but they are glass bottles to avoid plastic. I would not be surprised though that you still claim for plastic bottles in 2020... All in all it is a repetitive review, with fake infos, contradicting even your own previous comments on some facts, deliberately made to harm. The fact is that another guest from your nationality was so much ashamed that he even offered to help us getting rid of you when you where there.

It has been over five months since I have been following up with the owners, asking them to refund the money they owe me. They charged me double (I have proof!) and are refusing to refund the excess to me. When they charged me double, I got an email assurance from Charles that he would refund the excess to me. But the money has still not come back to me. At first, the owners would respond to our reviews on google, etc. alleging that we were bad guests, until I pointed out that not only were we not, it also does not justify them withholding payment due to us. Once they realized that their opinion of a guest does not authorize them to charge the guest double, their strategy has changed - now there is only silence! We are not based in SL and hence, they are taking advantage of the fact that we cannot physically go there and demand the money they rightly owe to us. I assume that most of their guests are foreigners. So please note - be careful of this hotel and their attitude. It was a 4 night stay so obviously I am talking of a fairly high amount. Our experience there was terrible and I am really surprised and wondering how this place is getting glowing reviews. But the main purpose of this review is to highlight the fact that the owners have no honesty. They have cheated me out of my money and I demand my money back. Charles/ Maneyika, I will not give up. So pay up.

Your comment is as true as your three previous ones about the same stay and same issue, which is by the way a violation of Tripadvisor guidelines. From your arrival and since your departure you have been a pain like never was with any guests. Finally putting completely fake reviews just to blackmail us, like saying rooms are small and dirty when you stayed in an enormous room generally praised for being also super well decorated and super clean. While you were the most dirty guests we ever had, constantly requesting personal assistance, blocking room/days without consideration for other guest who might have been willing to stay etc... And other lies in your previous reviews. You are also sending friends "on mission" putting fake reviews (ike on Feb 4th and others) although they have not stayed : very elegant. So don't be surprised that from the beginning we have no consideration at all for your lies, insults, behaviour, and recriminations. Therefore it doesn't change our first answer that I am copying again : QUOTE " "Happy to read from you that the food in our place is very good, especially pizzas and croissants. Regarding the Srilankan owner who according to you "had no manners" she is the same person who is praised for her manners, warmth, kindness and for her service in 300 reviews bringing us 9.6 on Booking.com and number 2 (by Customers ranking) on Tripadvisor. Which anyone will tell you is extremely difficult to get, and as much to keep, especially over this number of reviews. However since we receive many Guests we have the chance of being able to make valuable comparative statistics. So when I will add that you simply were... - extremely demanding before and during your stay, requesting a lot of personal nevrotic attention, not mentioning your verbal and written logorrhea - very dirty compared to 99% of our usual guests (the cleaning lady complained) - very "reluctant" (after refusing) to pay while we had not received your online payment - You also requested us to block a room that you didn't use.. too bad for other Guests. ... then I think potential or past Guests will make their own judgement. You said "service is pathetic" : roughly 300 people out of ... close to 300 on Booking.com say service is excellent (Staff/service mark is 9.9/10). And cleanliness as far as I remember is close to that as well, and not thanks to you. What is "pathetic" on the contrary was your behaviour : it was so abnormal that another Guest also from India like you interfered between Maneyika and you, telling that it was enough to be such a shame for your common country (India). And he was - very elegantly I must say - offering to pay for you. Which obviously we refused. Only when we said we were going to call the police and stop you at the airport you understood that you could not make a fool of us in spite of your scandalous attitude. Or pathetic as you say. " [UNQUOTE]

We stayed three nights at this amazingly charming Bed & Breakfast. The hostess was told us a lot of Galle, her business and her family. The atmosphere was very relaxed and it was our impression that she treated her staff (two women and three younger men) as her family; there was always a lot of talking and laughing. We highly recommend this Bed & Breakfast which is located centrally within the fort of Galle.

To begin with, this hotel would not be for everyone. The owners make this very clear and we received a message after we booked and there is a note in the room. It was however, very suitable for us and we thoroughly enjoyed our experience here. The staff are ery welcoming an accomodating and the rooms are spotless and spaious. Breakfast is super, mkae sure you try the croissants and the repes which are all home made. The location is excellent and you are right in the middle of the Fort area which means you can walk everywhere. This hotel is ideal for couples and for those who are travelling alone.
