#2 of 184 hotels in Malang
Travelers' Choice
This most unique hotel in East Java, the only 5-star luxury hotel in Malang, is not just a hotel. It is a whole destination by itself. It is a beautiful living museum filled with priceless beautiful antiques and artworks of Indonesia, and every corner of this hotel celebrates the colorful history of Indonesia, of Java, and of Malang in particular. Every single staff so naturally carries the "hospitality from the heart" that is so authentically Indonesian gracefully, and nothing is ever a problem. This is the very place to experience the true soul of Java and Indonesia.

I had wonderful experience having my breakfast plus private hotel tour with the GRO of Hotel Tugu Malang. Pak Handi bring us around the properti, share the history behind the amazing collection of the owner's family. It was super nice and wonderful opportunity to see every corner and also the most expensive room in that hotel, the Apsara Room. Breakfast was delicious, and all staffs in every level was so polite and nice. Can't wait to make another trip to Malang and stay in this hotel. Thank you for having me.

Hotel's Favorite
My husband and I were able to stay at Tugu Malang after successfully bidding on a charity auction. It was a fantastic excuse to stay here (we love the Tugu Hotels) and support charity. The owners of the Tugu hotels are amazingly creative. I loved the tribute to the history of Java in such a beautiful setting. We took the bike ride around Malang which I highly recommend and also had a massage at the Spa - amazing! The staff are attentive without being over the top. The rooms are exceptionally well furnished, each room a different theme. I was able to sneak into the room next door which is dedicated to the famous Indonesian artist Raden Saleh. It is in a world of its own. Hotel Tugu Malang is the perfect way to experience and explore Indonesian beauty in a stunning setting. I highly recommend.

Basically we all love beauty. If you think beauty is art and heritage, maybe we have the same appreciation about this place. For me, a hotel is not just about hospitality and comfort when you are there. Strong concepts that become the soul of a place, will provide unforgettable moments. The first time I had dinner here, I was amazed by the atmosphere of this hotel. Very exotic. I really found the concept of 'art, soul and romance' that this hotel carries. Accompanied by friendly staff, I toured the hotel with the atmosphere of the Babah Peranakan Jawa (peranakan: a cultural mix of hundreds of years, between Chinese migrants in Java and native Javanese). Not only looking at priceless antiques collections, you will also find a strong heritage atmosphere here. In fact, I felt like I was traveling back in time, when I was in a dining room with the theme of the remains of the Angkor Temple. The same thing you will find in other parts with different concepts. I really appreciate the idea of Tugu hotel to preserve culture and art. Every month on the 15th, they present an art performance at dinner. This event is more socially oriented, to care for the arts. So you don't need to pay to see it, only with dinner without a minimum purchace. I really enjoyed it. With a delicious Nasi Bakar (grilled rice) menu and snacks as appetizers, I followed the show to the end. A sweet experience, because even though as a local citizen I rarely see live art performances. So if you plan to come to Malang, I highly recommend this hotel.

My wife and I decided on a romantic weekend away (from Jakarta) in Malang at Tugu a few months ago as part of a charity auction at the Tugu Bali. We have also stayed a few times at Tugu Lombok. So clearly we are confident in what Tugu is able to produce. Again the quality of the service was excellent. Nothing was an issue and the staff were genuinely friendly. The architecture, the collection of art and antiques seems to be at a whole new level in Malang, compared with Bali and Lombok. The history of the owners family and their contribution to East Java is on display. It might be more helpful for people like me (non Indonesian) if the art/antiques had descriptions underneath them so you can understand their significance. The advice I got from a friend who visits Malang regularly was that we shouldn’t leave the hotel. We followed this advice for the first day, but took the bike tour on the second day. I would strongly recommend the bike which was expertly lead by the Guest Relations Officier, Andi. Malang is a city that moves at a different pace to Jakarta and Bali, so you are sage. During the bike tour you are taken to markets and even to the matriarch (recently deceased) of the family who owns Tugu ... so you get some insights into a city that is charming. I was truly glad to see this side of Malang. It reminded me of an Indonesia that I had first seen as a kid in Surabaya in the 80s ... but perhaps Malang residents are more proud of their city as it seems to well kept and tidy. Breakfast at Tugu Malang is something you should prepare for by making sure you have plenty of time and an appetite. I did this and didn’t need to each lunch ... not only is it big, it is tasty. If you are a antique/art buff you can spend your days in the hotel without a worry. For others it is a great place to relax. It comes well recommended by me.
