An exceptionally ecofriendly beautiful accommodation in a remote part of Ubud town, surrounded by the tropical lush, offering a spectacular common space and beautifully done rooms with different decorations and colors in perfect harmony with the nature.
The services and the smiles of the friendly staff were an added value to the place which made it even more memorable.
You are giving yourself a memorable treat!

We returned to firefly after two years to find alot of changes. All is still great , this time we stayed in the Bamboo house and it was amazing we loved it every second of our stay. The new owners Penny +Wayne did every thing to make our stay great, they offered a huge selection of outings we may like to do.Kadek was his amazing self serving the most tempting breakfasts helping with get our laundry done and turning down our bed at night .Firefly now has a pool and great free wifi in all it is the perfect spot for us .The one thing that may be a draw back is there is some walking to get to firefly but if you want to enjoy the real bali relaxed and so beautiful then Fireflys for you cheers

How pleased we were to be staying her rahter than central Ubud, which we didn't like at all. Ann, who owns the place is a real character - an Australian who spends half her year here, living in one of the three houses within the grounds, and the other half in Australia. We were lucky enough to meet her just before she left. The communication by e-mail long before we arrived was very good and she even booked us tickets for a local Jegog on our first night and went with us. We LOVED our room - the bedroom was spacious, the bed very comfortable and the inside/outside bathroom lovely. However, the best part is the HUGE outdoor living room, with built in seats, chairs and lounger, looking over the beautiful garden. Breakfast is included and was the best we had in Bali - fruits from the garden with home made yoghurt and home made lemon butter, toast and home made jams and eggs - all served on a bale in the middle of a pond - delightful. The staff were helpful and friendly - especially Kadek - nothing was too much trouble and Ann works closely with her friend Yandira, who is also a driver who can take you off the beaten track and hlep you understnd the 'real' Bali. Yandira helps to run the place when Ann is in Australia. The guest house is a 30 minute walk into the centre of Ubud, where there is a large choice of restaurants, (Pulau Kelapa was our favourite - turn left at bottom of steps if walking into town) or ask Kadek, who will arrange a taxi or for a local warung to deliver and have the food on your terrace overlooking the rice fields. I cannot recommend Firefly guesthouse highly enough. It was the perfect end to our trip to Bali.

Just stayed for about two weeks, Oct-Nov, in the little joglo, the red house that others mentioned. It was so cozy and charming! The staff is truly lovely and accommodating, and Ann, who was in town, is just wonderful. She had so many great suggestions for places to go that were off the beaten track, and tourist-free (okay, other tourists), that I felt like I was discovering new secrets about Bali every day. It was very hot during my stay, but if I went into Ubud early in the day, it wasn't a problem. I didn't actually like Ubud very much - it's so noisy and crowded - so I mostly went on day trips with her driver Yandira, spending as little time in Ubud as possible. Yandira is indeed a gem, he's tireless and friendly. And he was extremely helpful with some bargaining on gifts! saved me a small fortune. What else... the breakfasts were huge and gorgeous, eating on the bale, the little deck overlooking the lotus pond, gazing out at all the flowers and trees and birds and other creatures was a wonderful way to start the day. Oh, and they just got internet, so I was able to get free wifi in my little home. All in all, it was a pretty dreamy way to spend a couple of weeks.

I was warmly welcomed to Pondok Ibu Anna by new owner Penny and head of house Kadek. A peaceful retreat in the rice fields, away from the noise and crowds of central Ubud, yet within easy walking distance of it. A luxuriant garden, ponds with waterlilies and fish, and very comfortable traditional accommodation. I stayed in the Villa, but the Joglo and Guest House are also lovely. It feels good just being there - the perfect place to revitalise. I used it as a base to attend the Ubud Writers and Readers Festival, and stayed on for a week to soak up the atmosphere. Always helpful and attentive, Penny and Kadek arranged reliable drivers and recommended excellent nearby warungs and restaurants. They arranged a cooking class focussed on the health benefits of food, and a day trip to Mount Batukaru for Alit’s delightful jungle walk, with lots of interesting commentary from Alit while his friend Yoga clambered up tall trees to bring us exotic fruits. I will return to Pondok Ibu Anna.

If you want to be away from hustle and bustle and try and feel like you are not a tourist this is the perfect place.
Location - In the middle of beautiful rice fields, where you can see fireflys at night. It is less than 30 min walk to the Main Street of Ubud.
Accommodation - We stayed in the one bed, which was bliss! It was very clean and tidy, and loved the outside sheltered bathroom! Filtered water was provided also.
The gardens are set up beautifully and there is a little hut in the middle where you can have you breakfast.
Anna the owner and her staff were extremely welcoming and helpful. They are a lovely team.
I thoroughly recommend, I almost don't want to though so I can keep it a little secret!
Other - collection from airport was organised for us at $35 and took a couple hours (didn't feel long though).

Unless you have been to Bali before I don't think you can appreciate how special a little place like Bali Firefly is. Yes its a bit of a walk from the car to the house- about 5 min if you are slow like me, but Kadek will carry your bags. Yes Ubud markets and shopping/eating district is a bit of a walk away, but we didn't mind the walk there (30-45 min) and paid a taxi to return us for about $5. We ate each night at nearby Kopi Desa, very cheap, or Lala Lilli, just a bit further but surrounded by lilly ponds, beautiful. There are 3-4 places within walking distance for meals. Their driver Yandira can take you on the most amazing day trips for approx. $60 for a very full day, or half day trips for $30 which we used for great shopping for art, woodwork, jewellery etc. But please believe me when I tell you this is a very special spot with gardens to die for, views of gorgeous ducks preening the rice fields every morning, and possibly the best breakfast we have ever had in Bali. Kadek is so so so sweet and humble and kind. His breakfast is amazing, home made yogurt with lemon butter, freshest fruit salad, sometimes with shaved coconut, duck eggs fresh from the neighboring ducks, and toast with home made paw paw jam and lime marmalade - words cannot describe. But possibly the best part of staying here is the local knowledge, and seeing the real Bali. No touristy trips, no silly visits to places just not worth seeing, Anna and Yandira will show you the real Bali for reasonable prices too. We have been to amazing waterfalls, walked through jungle at the base of a mountain, eaten freshly made real Bali food with the family who showed us the jungle, shopped directly with the artists who make jewellery and amazing artists and wood carvers. We wasted no time in typical touristy places that don't benefit the people of Bali which I really appreciated. Do yourself a favor, spend at least part of your stay here to see it for yourselves. Anna herself inspires me. She is 80 years young but strong and still quite spritely. Please read other visitor review to get a good idea of what to expect, but we loved our stay and recommend it highly. Ann, thank you for the best Bali experience ever!!!

If you ever get a chance to go to Bali stay with Ibu Anna at her Pondok and Kunang-Kunang Guesthouse in Penestenan. It was wonderful. The location was great. Located deep in the ricefields of a very small village near Ubud. The people though, made the adventure. Ibu Anna, Yandira, Kadek and Iluh made our stay most relaxing, exciting, and so very interesting. Kadek and Iluh take care of all of your needs within the compound. Assistants, par extraordinaire!
Each day, Ibu Anna and Yandira had a great selection of options for us to consider. Over the course of the two weeks we spent with them, we had some quiet days, just enjoying the compound's birds and gardens, walking on the rice field paths into Ubud, and reading our books near the fishpond in the garden.
On other days though, we had adventures that I'd wager are amongst the best Bali has to offer. We went white water rafting with a very experienced guide in the back and Yandira in the front. It was great. We went to White Sands and to Blue Lagoon beaches, both far from the regular tourist crowd and so lovely. We were able to get to the volcano lookouts before the tourist buses arrived and somehow, almost magically, have a number of important temples, seemingly to ourselves. Furthermore, we ended up in little villages, where we met the artisans who make the silver, batiks, Keliki paintings, indigo dying, carvings and then sell from their homes. We went on a jungle walk, high up in a very small village where there were no tourists. In fact, there were no stores to be seen in that village. True village life. Don't miss the cooking class or the evening entertainment on offer. Particularly the Kecak performance...spectacular.
Other reviews and and the photos will give you a good idea of what Ibu Anna's property is like. It's actually much prettier that the photos are able to show. Don't just go for the great accommodations...go for the adventures that Ibu Anna and Yandira will take you on. They're more than worth every penny and you'll be asking yourself when you'll be able to come back to experience the ones you couldn't fit in. Thank you all so very much.

we had the great opotunity to meet ibu anna.... she, kadek, madeh and yandira provided us a very warm welcome. we stayed for eight nights at the kunang-kunang. we had such a great honeymoon there. this place is a piece of heaven on earth. kadek is a perfect employee. he is allways there to help you. yandira is a great guide. the breakfast is very delicious ( duck-egg, toast, homemade marmelade, fruitsalat, coffe or tea, sirsakdrink; - dont forget to ask for kadek's famous blackricepudding!! all employees will love you for that ;-). ) for lunch and dinner are very good warungs in the near. ( our favourite was bubu's warung and lala&lili). here you get a complete dinner for est. 12 $ (2 pers). the guesthouse has an outside bathroom which is very nice. the sleeping room is getting prepared by kadek every night ( anti-mosquito) which worked very well! you have a small fridge in your room.
the wi-fi worked well.
the highlight of this special place is the bale belong in the center of the garden! great place to relax and enjoy. and have you breakfast!
but the best are the great recommendetations from yandira or ibu...... the kecak/firedance is a very good show, but dont miss the jegong-concert! it is a blast!
one of the greatest day was an arranged jungle-walk with alit! despite the weather conditions this is a must-do! there is only ony one word to describe..... delicious! ibu took us to this very special trip and we were speachless! alit and his family are so nice people!
and while you are in ubud, dont forget to ask for a wellnes-treatment in the near spa's.....
in a nuitshell: this place is great! we loved the time we spent there!

There have been many changes in Ubud since Eat, Pray, Love advertised its unique charms to the world, and the neighborhood around Ibu Anna's in Penestanan Kaja has been rapidly growing around it. Anna has been there for 10 years and, though her place is well maintained, and has a lovely mature garden, it is overpriced compared to the spacious new villas which often have pools and better views. These villas have several bedrooms, kitchens, beautiful garden bathrooms, pools and ricefield views for much less per night than her two small rooms. Most come with daily cleaning, but not the time and attention Ibu Anna and her staff give to their guests. Ibu Anna is an interesting woman who lived several places in Asia before settling in Queensland. Her friendliness and knowledge could be very helpful for first time visitors, but having been to Bali myself many times before, having my own friends and favorite drivers, I felt uncomfortably pressured to take the excursions she was promoting.
The bedroom and bath at Ibu Anna's are smallish, but the bed is covered with a bright locally batiked sheet, crisp, clean and cool for lounging in the tropical heat. The main living space of this Guest Houses is outside, and quite pleasant, except for the daily unpredictable and sometimes startling appearance of strange men (workmen, gardeners, guards). There is ongoing construction close by which disturbs daytime peace, but, despite being cautioned to keep windows and doors locked, nights are still symphonies of frogs, cicadas and distant gamelan practice. I missed the cooling evening breezes with all the windows locked.
Unless there's a rice field short cut I didn't find, Ibu Anna's is more than a 15 minute walk from Ubud, especially when it's hot and steamy. Cars cannot bring you all the way and motorcycles can be scary on the one lane path where old women carry construction materials on their heads and men push wheelbarrows. It's an easy walk into the villages of Penestanan where there are many restaurants (for foreigners), warungs (the only places locals eat out), small shops and artists studios. Vespa, the closest restaurant, has an organic menu and wi-fi.
Irritating and ungenerous: Anna made a point of charging me the less than $10. exchange difference between US and AUS dollars, even though I was alone, which saved her 10 breakfasts, and laundry. The "view of Agung" must be from her bedroom balcony in the main villa; it was certainly not visible from the Guest House. The Joglo is tiny and possibly romantic for some, but closed tight at night as advised, I think it would be sweaty and suffocating; I would look at it before considering paying $85/night. You might prefer a 2 bedroom villa with a pool and beautiful bath for less than what Ibu Anna charges for one of her small rooms.
