My wife and I had a wonderful time in Varanasi. This Holy city is simply gorgeous. Despite the traffic chaos in the streets, the people is so sweet. Not a single motorbike nor tuc-tuc touched me during our walks in the crowded areas. The Ganges religious ceremonies were simply very emotional... At the end of the day, completely exhausted, my wife and I were regularly returning to our Ganges View Hotel, on the Ganges river. This antic Maharajah family house, with its old furniture, paintings and souvenirs, is a dreamable place, if you are an authentic nostalgic person. In this hotel, you are deeply immersed in the real India. You can see that, as soon as you open the brass padlock of your room. This is the India we always imagined, since we were kids, in our Western countries. Any time I was moving around the flourished terraces, I was feeling strong romanesque emotions. I was just walking through the pages of an adventure book. All facilities in this hotel are simple, but very efficient. No TV. Why to have a TV ? Shows and movies are outside, in the streets. After a very good vegetarian meal, full of chapatis, the only thing you need is to have some rest in a beautiful antic wood bed, surrounded by colorful wool carpets. At the end of our stay, before to go, with some sadness in our throat, the Manager gave us an Indian holy scarf as a souvenir from Varanasi, as a souvenir from the nice personnel of the Ganges View Hotel. My wife and I were not able to hold back.. our tears ! …
This hotel is great if you are looking for accommodation near Assi Ghat. The hotel has a certain charm, especially the restaurant where breakfast and dinner is served, with lovely antique furniture and paintings. Bear in mind however that this is not a 5* property. It will appeal to some, but not to all. It is certainly a heritage building, but the hotel looks old and tired. I can only speak for the room I stayed in (Dec 2019) on the main (ground) floor: while there is a balcony/terrace with shutters, giving out on the street, the room is rather small (most of the room is occupied by a poster bed) and dark (the window gives on the balcony), with a connecting small standard bathroom. The staff are friendly and all smiles, and eager to help where they can. Great location if you want to experience the early morning/evening rituals. There is even early morning yoga just outside the hotel. The noise didn’t bother me. I can wholeheartedly recommend the Harmony bookshop next door.…
We thoroughly enjoyed a 3 night stay at the artfully decorated, homely Hotel Ganges View. It is located at Assi Ghat, a lively and eventful ghat where important morning and evening rituals occur. Assi Ghat is approximately 20-30 min walk from the centre of the old city, however this is a good feature about the location of this hotel allowing some escape from the bustling centre. There is plenty to see and do around Assi Ghat. The walk to the other ghats very easy from Assi Ghat and will be apart of every visitors itinerary - Assi Ghat is a good place to start the walk of the ghats, then finish. There are good vegetarian restaurants within walking distance of this hotel as well as traditional street foods and local cuisine along the main road a couple of minutes walk away. Hotel Ganges View offers evening Indian vegetarian buffet meals in their very comfortable dining room for their guests - the meal delicious, plentiful and a highlight of our stay here, for 400 rupees pp. The hotel is spotlessly clean. The water is hot. Rooms comfortable. The hotel has several attractive terraces and courtyards to enjoy some peaceful serenity off the street, which was necessary for us in busy, lively and always eventful Varanasi. As the hotel is right on the ghat it’s difficult to escape the noise that starts early in the morning- but this I feel is a problem all over India within larger cities. Staff are friendly, helpful and attentive to needs. I’ll stay here again if ever I’m lucky enough to visit this fascinating city.…
Overlooking the Ganges, the hotel is an exquisite ensemble of rooms opening onto terraces that step up the side of the hill. Paintings and artwork are everywhere, as the owner is an artist and/or patron of the arts. There are also beautiful plants growing everywhere, on terraces and overlooks, and little touches that are so thoughtful. A true oasis. The meals are delightful and delicious, and the other guests are fascinating. The staff was charming, helpful and kind.
