I have visited Lake Pichola Hotel several times now. Sometimes as a ‘treat’ to celebrate the start of a Rajasthan tour and sometimes as the celebratory ‘treat’ to end the tour. However, this time in March/ April it was our first, last and in between ‘treat’. We arrived the day that hotels were advised not to admit tourists. The owner, a most honourable man could not find it in his heart to turn us away and therefore welcomed us into his hotel for the 3 nights we had booked even though all other tourists had left trying to catch last minute flights. Then, suddenly, lockdown occurred next day and so we, the owner and family, and staff specially kept on for us, were all in lockdown together. 44 days later (and feeling like family) we left after what proved to be an amazing, humbling and unforgettable experience. This was entirely due to the owner and staff who did everything in their power to keep us safe, healthy and very happy. Nothing was too much trouble and indeed there were so many unexpected little kindnesses shown to us. They wanted us to feel at home as much as possible. I’ve always loved this hotel. Beautiful rooms with delightful balconies overlooking the lake, superb menu served to the incredible rooftop restaurant under the stars and the wonderful staff, a pleasure to greet every day. And now it’s firmly in my heart. This is truly a marvellous hotel to stay and I recommend it immensely, a remarkable little gem, run by remarkable people.

This was our 4th visit to Lake Pichola Hotel (so that says a lot) and what was supposed to be a 3 night stay on our independent tour of Rajasthan turned into 1 and a half months!! We arrived just as lockdown in India was about to happen and instead of being turned away as many travelers at many other hotels were – Mr Singh the owner invited us in and welcomed us with open arms and an open heart. This is a stunningly beautiful hotel set in an amazing location with easy access by foot to all areas of the old town. If you like walking and pottering around traditional little back streets, you will love it here. The hotel has amazing views over the lake, beautiful rooms and fabulous food in it’s famous roof top restaurant but this place is about so much more than just bricks and mortar. It’s a place filled with human kindness where nothing is too much trouble, and as Mr Singh always says, “Guest is God” and that’s exactly how we were treated. Mr and Mrs Singh you, your family and every member of your staff are the kindest, most caring and compassionate human beings. Not only for allowing us into your home at this most uncertain of times but for making it our home and our family. You all showed us the true meaning of human kindness and we were truly blessed to reach the safety of your 4 walls. We pray for your safe passage through this choppy Covid sea and we can’t wait to visit once again when this is all over.

We are in Isolation due to the Pandemic and as we sit with a cup of tea our thoughts return to Lake Pichola Hotel ....and we smile. This has to be the BEST hotel we have stayed in in India. Greeted by a smiling uniformed driver with the Hotel Tuk Tuk we were transported to the hotel along narrow streets where vehicles are not permitted. At the hotel we were smilingly and smoothly booked in, fresh flowers placed around our necks and a welcoming glass of punch in our hands before we were escorted to our room overlooking beautiful Lake Pichola. On our balcony two doves cooed. The room was spacey and well laid out. Everything very clean. The bathroom had a selection of shampoos for my wife who was delighted and I put the kettle on for a cup of coffee. We had a choice of air conditioning or a ceiling fan. As darkness fell the lights on all the properties around the lake reflected in the water, we sat on the balcony with a glass of champagne and said, ‘life does not get much better than this’. After a great nights sleep we came down to a magnificent breakfast. So much choice from just cereals and toast to any style eggs, to vegetarian dishes, silver salvers with six local dishes, to sausages with all the trimmings, tea coffee and juices. As we ate a talented musician sitting on a minute high stage played historical and new tunes on his flute. After a very satisfying breakfast it was good to relax with a coffee in the adjacent couch area, or on the long restaurant balcony overlooking the water, and read the Times of India. The staff treated us truly well. They were compatible with staff at Raffles in Singapore or the Connaught in London. Once this dreadful time of Pandemic is over we will be back.

An exceptional hotel for exceptional times We stayed at Lake Pichola Hotel just before the coronavirus crisis started to accelerate in the world, and especially to India. We are so indebted to Mr Chandra Bhanu Singh & his family and staff for not only the most wonderful stay but also checking in on us with genuine love and concern several times a day. This, beyond all the other excellent qualities of the hotel, will always be etched in our hearts. Of course, the hotel without a doubt is absolutely gorgeous, situated right on the lake and with an incredible view of the city palace from all the lake facing rooms. The rooftop restaurant Upre is divine and perfect for sundowners and dinner. The best part, however, is the ever-smiling and ever courteous team that the hotel has- even in times of intense stress (as the corona crisis developed in Udaipur), they were willing to go above and beyond. We cannot wait to be back in happier times and tell everyone about this absolute gem of a place.

The hotel is on a lake and offers great views. The pool is a plunge pool. Staff very friendly. Some aspects of the rooms and general decor seem a little tired compared with the competing 5 star hotels in Rajasthan, which are generally exceptional.
