We originally booked 2 weeks after reading reviews, price and location. We had an excellent stay. Firstly the staff are a credit to the hotel, from the reception staff to the gardeners, happy smiling faces everywhere. If u need anything just ask. The gardens and pool area is quiet and peaceful and is constantly being cleaned and tidied. The food was good but you can easily walk to the main strip for a change of scenery and see how the locals go about there life. This is Gambia its not greece or Spain so don't expect the same. We just walked 10 mins from hotel several times for food and drinks and enjoyed the experience. We decided to stay another 10 days the manager showed us several other rooms but decided to stay put. We'll done Balafon

Hotel's Favorite
Second visit here, fantastic for a laid back break. Huge rustic rooms, with great room service, and great service throughout the hotel, many thanks to Yaya Cham for making sure we always feel most welcome. Great simple menu to eat in, and a great range of local restaurants. The beach is just fantastic, and really well policed, so you can interact with local traders without feeling swamped, and marvel at local life come the evening. Good for long walks in both directions, with everyone very friendly, helping you feel completely safe. Good range of local trips available within easy reach, from the monkey forest to markets and fishing villages, ask for Santana out the front, he is excellent, knowledgeable and utterly trustworthy. We will be back for winter sun as regularly as we can. Although the temperature is in the 30s, the beach breeze makes everything so comfortable. We rarely return anywhere, but this feels like home!

Balafon is an excellent hotel.  The rooms, the breakfast, the beach: everything is very good.  I like that Balafon has a Gambian owner.   From Balafon you can walk along the beach or across the street to Sengambia Strip, where most of the restaurants are, in about fifteen minutes.  In the evening we took a taxi back for safety reasons.  That costs 200 dalasi. When we arrived we were assigned a room that did not look like the photos in the travel guide.  We objected and were then given the nicer room.  So pay close attention when checking in! We were in Balafon in March 2024 and the guests were almost all Dutch. And now the downside of hotel Balafon: the internet.  That's very bad.  We bought a SIM card from Africell, but that didn't really help.  The internet is so weak that you can never read the newspaper or look up something about a trip to Gambia.  Working from Balafon?  Better not try it!

Serious safety incident
For first time visitors to the Gambia I would recommend a different establishment. My friend and I are two young black women who wanted to enjoy our stay but were instead met with constant sexual advances made towards us by staff. The service is close to none. The food and drinks are not good, the breakfast isn’t worth waking up for and the whole experience was just too stressful. There is no concept of boundaries with staff members coming to our rooms to ask for our numbers or to take us out. The demographic in the hotel is majority white old couples. The lights in the room make you constantly want to sleep and there is a serious ant problem. Wish everyone the best of luck but would say it is definitely only for the brave. Best of luck to young traveler's especially solo. NB-If a member of staff tells you he lives in the hotel and hasn’t seen his family in weeks he is simply try to coerce you ladies please beware.

We visited The Balafon for our honeymoon in Feb 2024. We stayed 10 nights in a Premium Ocean View Room on Bed & Breakfast . The location was perfect and we are booking to go back next January. Our stay was made perfect by Lamin Camara Assistant Restaurant Manager … Lamin ensured we had the most memorable honeymoon. We had breakfast in our room everyday and felt extremely welcome. Nothing was too much trouble for Lamin and his team. I’d like to mention Maamune, Fatou and Mam Kumba just a few of the restaurant team who looked after us during our stay. Because of these smiley friendly Gambian people we will look forward to staying with them again very soon

The rooms are oké. Our room was in de back near a ditch en Some trees. Al lot of birds and monkeys are there. Thats very Nice. But the smell from the ditch en de sewage was not fine. Sometimes it was very terrible. The room untherneath our room had a window at the bathroom just like every other bathroom, but you can see inside the bathroom if you pass on the stairs, so you see the other tourist while having a bath. The swimming pool had nothing to hold on to while gowing in and out. Thats not very secure. The swiiming pool is allways clean but you do not have tables to put your stuff. It is very Nice that the hotel is at the beach. Cleaning the side of the beach of the hotel is not what the hotel staf does. The beach is not very clean. The wifi is very very very bad. There was no TV. After complaining nothing changed. After complaining when checking out at the hotel did not even change anything. You pay for all those things. There is no compensation. For 11 Days we had bad wifi or no wifi, no tv and multiple times no water to shower. Its not really a problem if there is no water. This is not what we payd for!!!

Good hotel at a nice location. Friendly people. Very big rooms. Shower and bed not so comfortabele buy ok. Breakfeast is realy good and a lot of choises. Every Day music at night for entertainment. Close to the strip. You can walk to the strip. Dont take a massage at tge hotel. They are to extensieve (75 euro). You can do the best massage at senegambia hotel for only 1100 dalasi.

We stayed at the Balafon Beach hotel and have stayed there on many previous occasions. Staff are always welcoming and friendly. Pool and garden are kept immaculate and well maintained. The breakfast is sufficient however there is room for improvement in the restaurant and the prices are too high even for a hotel in Africa. If you use the bar service due to the amount of paperwork involved you should check your bill before paying. The rooms are spacious and the roomservice do a wonderful job each day. After having stayed many occasions and having being accommodated in various rooms covering the site it was noted that the rooms are ready for modernising refurbishment i.e on our last stay the bathroom only had a shower curtain for privacy. The Balafon claims it be a four star hotel, however in some area’s improvement is required. The beach is currently under pressure from Mother Nature, after a recent storm, most of the beach including sun beds parasols were washed into the sea. However the beach location is still an idyllic place to spend a day. Enjoy and take up a conversation with the many traders that pass by, this includes the fruit ladies, massage and everything from sunglasses to having a ride on a horse. Your support to these locals might mean the difference of them feeding their families that day or not!!! Chris&Steve

Balafon looks nice from the photos but there is still lots of work to do for management - The creek that runs close to several cabins (also the ones with private pool) is used by the staff as a dump. The creek smells terribly because the staff throws garbage into it and the restaurant dumps the wastewater from the kitchen into it. See attached pictures. - The breakfast buffet is fine. There is always a long queue at the chef who bakes eggs and pancakes. As a result, part of the buffet is difficult or impossible to access. - The beach looks messy and polluted. It is striking that there is only 1 waste container available for guests lying on the beds at the beach. There are no ashtrays available, so everyone throws away their cigarettes on the beach. This hotel could take an example from the Kunta Kinte resort, where there is a waste bin every 5 meters and where there are many (large) ashtrays (filled with sand) so that the beach remains clean. There are several old tires on Balafon beach that were probably once the base of a parasol. There is also a lot of plastic. The management should take the lead and set an example in keeping the beach clean. For example, they could regularly have a garbage truck collect waste on the beach and take the initiative for plastic recycling. The beach is their most important selling point, so they better be careful with it.
