The Grand Makadi Hotel is a lively destination with the needs of younger families firmly at its heart. There is a large sweeping beach, and a jetty that takes guests directly to the house reef where they can enjoy snorkelling in the crystal clear Red Sea waters. The large swimming pool and sun terrace offer plenty of space for sunbathing, and the children’s club and sporting activities keep the children occupied. Add a diverse choice of restaurants and it really is an ideal base for enjoying all the Red Sea has to offer.

My experience in Grand Makadi was the best so far. We were in other hotels such as Makadi Palace or Waterworld Makadi - we were here many times. It was our first experience in Grand Makadi. I highly recommend, especially the animation team that is led by Tito is fantastic. They are all really helpful and friendly.

We had a fabulous week at this hotel, from 19 to 26 May - we wish we had booked for longer. All the staff are very hard working and helpful. Our room, 2105, a junior suite, was very nice and it was kept very clean by our room cleaner - he was as helpful as all the other staff members. The food was pretty good; we breakfasted at the lagoon mostly, we went to the island once for breakfast but there were quite a lot of annoying flies, so we stuck with the lagoon where you can eat indoors. There was plenty of choice and variety too. We had dinner one night at the lagoon, the food was pretty good, but then we tried the restaurants in the makadi mall and the atmosphere there was actually much nicer, more restauranty and less like a cafe. We had lovely meals at the Italian, the Chinese, the Indian and the Egyptian restaurants there. And the service was really very polite and attentive - they couldn’t do enough for us! The pool is just magnificent - yes there are a few displaced tiles on the floor of the pool, but actually it really doesn’t detract from how lovely the pool is - it’s huge, was never crowded and we were always able to have a proper swim and also just chill in the water without getting too near to other people. The jetty is the most solid that we have seen in Egypt, and we’ve seen a lot, it’s very safe to get in the water. The snorkelling is as good as we’d hoped, although slightly restricted by the rope cordons they have in place in the sea - I guess this is for safety reasons but it does limit your freedom to fully explore the reef. Overall we really enjoyed our time at the hotel very much - we were in the minority being British but that didn’t bother us at all, that’s actually how we like it! We are hoping to return in November, to get some sun before the winter!! Thank you Grand Makadi, we had a wonderful holiday.

My wife & I visited The Grand Makadi hotel for the third time. Good parts :- The staff were all very helpful & friendly The food was good, especially the fruit pastries Our room , a Junior suite, was comfortable and spacious with good views from the balcony I would like to praise our cleaner, Amr was most efficient. The manager of the Asian restaurant was always welcoming & Helpful as was Karam on the reception desk. The coral reef was good for snorkelling. The less good points :- In a quality hotel like the Grand Makadi rooms should have free wi-fi, not just in reception area The lighting over the bed should be brighter for bedtime reading. Will we return to the Grand? Hopefully next year.

The hotel was absolutely fantastic! From the friendly welcome at reception to the impeccable room amenities, there was nothing to fault. The rooms were spacious, clean and comfortable, offering everything needed for a pleasant stay. The staff were always helpful and accommodating, and available for any questions or requests. The breakfast buffet was varied and abundant, catering to every taste. The location of the hotel was also ideal, situated in a quiet area but within close proximity to many tourist attractions. Overall, I can highly recommend this hotel without reservation, and would return anytime.

it was a really good holiday. Definitely a great experience. I found very little practical information online before I left- so this review is the things I would have liked to know before I went. I learned a lot from other reviews on here so thank you to those who posted and this is my chance to pass on the favour. The website information is sparse and not upto date. I booked with redsea holidays. I was very happy with them online and they gave sufficient advance info. I would think if you are not very IT literate not for you but for me it worked well remotely. I chose this hotel because it was all inclusive and had a coral reef off the private beach. TOP TIP- you need cash, for tips, for everyone. If you don't tip the waiters you don't get any drinks so not much point paying for an all inclusive if you can't get all the benefits. See later for more. Facts Arrival- we took a private transfer from the airport- our flight was delayed and this was a bonus to then be taken direct to the hotel. We were shattered. We arrived and the greeting was super- a bit of flaffing around filling in reservation cards (why photocopy our passports and then make us write the information out again on another form) but that is they way of Egypt. We were delighted to find that the buffet had been kept open till our arrival so we could eat- it was 10pm at night and they kept it till midnight for late arrivals. Gold star. Made life easy Rooms- we are a family of 5 and went for two junior suites. I did that so we had plenty of space, They put us really close to each other, not quite next door but as near as possible. The rooms were generous with living space and a balcony with more outdoor seating space. We had our daughter in our room- the bed was made up for the wrong room and they immediately changed this while we had our late buffet. This is another big gold star. The double bed was massive and my sons agreed to share- they normally refuse but pointed out these beds could sleep 4 people. Facilities- the room had a ketlle and a mini fridge. We used the fridge a lot. They deliver a large bottle of water every day. Put straight in fridge. The bathroom was poor. Shabby. My toilet flush button fell off every day. There was a bath with an overhead shower. It was fine but not even 2 star. Toiletries were given but sparse. Bring your own. Bathroom towels would just about swaddle a toddler. And were hard. Made up for big fluffy orange beach towels which would do my own bathroom proud and can swaddle a lanky teenager. Towels replaced each day for beach. My hotel towels were hit and miss but not much used anyway as we brought loads of beach towels (too many actually as we got 4 beach towels a day and could have asked for more as 5 of us). Top TIp- need to be back in room early evening 5-7 to get beach towels replaced. In theory they will do it without you- I don't think they will in practice cos they hope to be tipped so hang around hoping to see you. I realised this after 4 days. More on tipping later. The resort- a huge pool. Really long Could have hundred people in and would not notice as it snakes around. Lots of sun beds. Lots of shade. They bring you a lounger to lay on top- the guy insists on carrying it over for you- or moving your loungers around. Again, think need to tip. There are also hundreds of sun beds and shades on the private beach. There is a sign up saying you can't pre book a bed. every one does. It didn't matter as very quiet so there was loads of space for us all. The beach is not very sandy- top tip- don't bother with buckets and spades( we did). The snorkelling is superb. Off the beach and really no need to move far before you are in beautiful coral reefs. We brought our own kit. A few windy days so we didn't go out every day. we bought a water camera from hotel shop which was rubbish and didnt work-bring your own kit if important for your holiday. Internet is rubbish. I survived three grumpy teenagers for 3 hours before caving in and buying a package. They were ecstatic. So was I. They installed a wifi router in our room at our request and it all went smoothly. Previous reviews warned of this. The wifi was still glitchy however for our purposes it was good. I could not have worked remotely but then I was on holiday. I recommend doing this and it was relatively cheap. I reckoned 2.50 per person per day. Food- Breakfast- two places to eat. One on the island in the pool This also serves dinner and alternates Carribean and Italian. Breakfast there was too hot for me, They shade not good. We mostly went to the Laguna which is the buffet breakfast. There is loads of choice for all- vegan, vegetarian etc. Pancakes, omelettes, pastries, cereal fruit and keep going. Hours are 730 till 10 at one and 8-10 a the other. Not so good for teenagers as there is then a gap between 10-1230 before you can get any food. I took some pastries back to the room a few days for the grumpier one. Lunch- the buffet lunch was our favourite and we went there most days. huge choice. Lots of grilled chicken, options from subway style freshly made sandwiches to grilled kebabs or inside hot buffets, loads of salads, rice, roast potatoes grilled veg beef casserole or curry etc etc. We also ate at the beach places a few times (not on the beach but near them). They stay open longer 1230 - 1630 so suited grumpier ones who don't rise in the morning. We got late lunches here. They do simple. Burgers fish fingers small salads. We quickly copped on salad was not meant to be a meal as about two tablespoons of something on a bowl. It was good. Dinner TOP TIP .there are 4 a la carte meals included. There are 3 restaurants, one alternates Carribean and Italian. The other two are Lebanese and Asian. Confusingly for me called Oriental and Asian. I figured it out in the end. You have to pre book. you are told you can only book day before. I think this is incorrect (perhaps a language translation issue). I found booking for 5 people really hard and even asking 4 days in advance could only get 8pm bookings. We ate at 3 of the 4. I personally wouldn't bother. I didnt think the food was great and the buffet worked better for our family. The rest of the family disagree and they recommend the Asian- Chinese and Thai style. All the a la carte offer extra meals which require you to pay for if you select them. Thy make this clear. I thought 9euro (9 sterling or 10 US dollars) for a small bowl of tom yum soup with 4 prawns was expensive. we also bought the fish dish in the Caribbean which was 30 euro (30 sterling). It was good but again I thought expensive. My son was happy!. Mostly we ate in the laguna which is 630 till9. Was always plenty of space. Good service and lots of lovely choice from pastas to meat dishes salads and grill. Differnt to lunch but not hugely different as I noticed by day 6!But lovely food. Icecream- from 330 to 5 every day you can get ice cream waffles and pancakes in the grand cafe reception area and afternoon tea with cakes and biscuits. This was popular. We went most days. They ran out of stuff by 420 so get there by 4. You can also PAY for ice cream any time of day- good selection ranging from 1 euro to 3 euros. Near beach food areas. Coffee- there is an amazing coffee bar in the reception. .Serves espresso and capuchin only. They do say at afternoon tea they serve Americano too but I never managed to get that from them. Top TIP= you can get small bottles of water from this coffee bar at any time of day (not cold, put them in your fridge). This bar also serves alcohol after midnight. And sells cocktails etc for a price. Alcohol and soft drinks- all the food places provide alcohol and soft drinks, Also the bar outside the reception. you can sit in the grand cafe area and hope to be served by a waiter. TOP TIP you need to tip if you want to be served. Beer is served in a small glass, think three to four mouthfuls. Wine is served in a small glass. I had a few gin and tonics which I would have compared to the size I would get in a UK bar. Not for beer and wine. The beer was nice. The wine was not. the gin was good. We also had sprite, Fanta and coke. All was fine but glass not big so we often had 3-4. If we could get a waiter that is. We got good service for drinks at all the restaurants. Not so in the grand cafe area and I have seen other reviews on this topic but didnt realise until I experienced it myself. Entertainment- there is lots on. I tried to go to yoga one day but no one turned up, Think I was just unlucky as I saw them doing stretching classes and water dancing as well as Beach volleyball. Live music and dancing in the evening which we did watch a few times and found the belly dancing impressive. TIPPING. this is probably the most important thing. I will go back and write it at the start of the review. If you don't tip, the waiters don't want to know you. Bring a small bag of coins. e.g 10 euros or 10 sterling coins.Bring a range of 5/10 notes. Within 24 hours you will be asked to swap a 5 note or a 10 note for coins. This is as good as giving a tip as they can't exchange money in coins in a bank. We were asked several times a day but I had bough US dollars not a lot of sterling and struggled to tip or to usefully covert. If I could do one thing different it would be a bag of coins and smaller demomination notes. Who to tip? everyone. From the moment we arrived we realised we had misjudged tipping There was the private transfer- tip the driver, tip the English speaking guide. Then receptionist. the person who brought our luggage to our room. The room cleaner. Who swept outside our room all day so we couldn't miss him. The beach towel provide. who made sure we were in to give us our towels. even though they could be swapped without needing us. Then there was the sun bed lounger carriers. The toilet cleaners. The waiters who did food and gave us drinks at the restaurants. The waiters who just did drinks. They were the worst actually and actively ignored us one evening and we spent an hour with no drink as three of them rushed past us looking the other way as they went. rushing to service new arrivals. We did tip people but ran out of what we had and then got ignored. The excursions tipping was worse- there was the bus driver then the guide, then the boat people, then the snorkeler guide. Basically you need money small coins and you need to be prepared. Excursions. - we took two. The Utopia island snorkelling all day event. It was ok, It was good family day out but really the snorkelling at the hotel was as good. The island we went to was very hot, even with shade we got burnt. We were there for 3 hours with nothing to do. I would not bother. They boys did a safari trip on sand dunes for 3 hours and saw Bedouins and drove sand buggies. They had fab time (they said even more people to tip it was endless) The Rep- we were told that the rep would meet us in the lobby and tell us all about our holiday and everything we needed to know. The guide who accompanied us to the hotel. said that this hotel was one of a complex all ran by same people so we could find out how to use other facilities. The rep was lovely man. All he wanted to do was sell us excursions. It was very persuasive. But no info about the other hotels. So when I asked about accessing the other hotels (I was just curious ) it was a firm no. even though the other side of my room was another large pool. I said could I not use it. No he said, (I would say not policed so we could but who cared). Could we use the waterpark I asked. Yes he said but you would not want to. Very small and we offer a whole day our for lots of money to this other one. No I said. I asked about the hotel free shuttle to town advertised on the website. No he said, Doesn't run. There is one but you pay. And we run a whole day our excursion trip you can go on and we can tailor it. It was quite hard sell, anything I asked, he could do better taking me himself. Top TIP, the handout for excursions said they could only be booked if 4 people went. Well as there were 5 of us mostly this made sense. For the sand buggy one, not all of unwanted to go. We said the boys would do a different one. They managed to accommodate them on the three hour one after all. The tip is, ask. I can't believe that lots of families of 5 go on holiday there and all these trips needed 4 from our little group, There must be other holdiday makers included in other hotels. It was another hard sell, he tried to get me to bring my youngest to sit in the desert all day while we went on the sand buggies- no way. But ask for less people and they might accommodate you overall great holiday bring cash and snorkels and you will have fab time

For the 4th time we have just spent a 3 week stay at the Grand Makadi with 4 couples of friends. Perfect stay. good meals, welcoming staff, impeccable cleanliness, attentive management. Bathing in the sea, facilitated with a bridge that crosses the coral reef with access by stairs to admire the fish. We will return with great pleasure to the Grand Makadi as soon as possible .
