Hotel Istra (3*) Opatija provides seafront hotel accommodation along the Adriatic. A short walk down Opatija's main street will put you in the middle of the city center. The Lungomare, Opatija's famous 12 kilometer-long coastal promenade, also leads to the center and offers an up-close view of the Adriatic Sea. We got welcomed by getting a wrong room and by rude staff, but the hotel made an apology for that. I don’t think the staff should treat guests with disrespect, especially when it comes to small things and misunderstandings. The staff should be nice to the guests no matter what. The hotel has a nice view and good food. And we had mostly a good experience. the hotel should make sure that its staff don’t have anger issues.

I am currently staying at the Smart Selection Hotel in Opatija and can honestly say it is the worst experience I have ever encountered. 1) Despite us having a long flight and headed up to check into the hotel at 1.55pm (check in is at 2pm) they refused to check us in and made us wait a few more minutes until the clock struck 2pm. Extremely rude staff, no customer service or value. 2) No mini fridge or safe in the room to be used (you have to pay extra to use the safe in reception) 3) Dirty swimming pool and tiny, not like the pictures at all. 4) Basic rooms, have been renovated but to a low standard. 5) You cannot buy drinks from the bar downstairs and bring them to your room which is ridiculous. The staff are awful, if you are heading to Opatija I would recommend you pick a different hotel.

I was looking for a last minute weeks holiday after the stress of moving house. Booked with tui half board plus also the hotel has had a full refurbishment . The coach driver took the sea view road which had lovey scenery but wasn’t well suited for large vehicles. When we arrived the reception staff were friendly and informative. The lift seemed as tho someone was turning a wheel as it screeched between floors, you could go straight to the restaurant and indoor pool/ outside from the lift. Our room was clean with shower in bathroom. Fresh towels and toiletries when needed. There was nowhere inside shower to keep toiletries so everything went on the floor. The bed was very comfortable but the pillows were the worst I’ve ever encountered so lumpy. We took kettle etc .Staff on the door of restaurant greeted everyone with a smile but the staff inside the restaurant just kept there heads down got on with clearing tables. Going in it was like going into a school cafeteria, very loud no atmosphere. Most nights we managed to get a window table with sea view . Good choice of food with help yourself local beer /red or white wine/soft drinks. The lay out of the restaurant meant the kitchen door way was blocked with people lining up for food. Some of the staff were annoyed they couldn’t get trollies in or food out. Breakfast was a little calmer with plenty of choice of hot/cold fresh food. No entertainment except guy one night playing accordion around the restaurant. There are sun beds outside with mattress free also umbrellas that are paid for. Small childrens pool had no rail to hold onto with slippery steps.l lost my footing and fell onto my back. Concrete bathing area with steps or metal ladder into the sea which on a few days was very choppy. Lots of small cafes, shops, restaurants near the hotel. Lovely walk way along the front all one level, goes on for few miles. Also you can walk to nearby beaches. The indoor pool was lovely so warm but far smaller then in photos. The seaside town of Opatija with its grand villas, parks and scenery is a beautiful place with friendly locals. We stayed here as we wanted to visit Plitvic National Park which was a few hours drive

Gorgeous sea view, spacious room, overall relax environment, reception staff were very helpful. The restaurant manager, Ivana, was a star, smiling and welcoming and helpful, some We stayed for 5 nights on a half board basis. Unfortunately no kettle or mini-fridge in the room and staff don’t let you to take chilled water or hot drink into your room from the restuarant. I found it strange that when putting the sign for cleaning the room, they don’t change the bed sheets, clean the shower or basin or put new toiletries , only check for towels if left on the floor. I must say they vacuumed cleaned the room after I told the reception.

We have just returned from hotel Istria and there was mixed feelings. First impressions not good as reception staff seemed grumpy and there was no greeting on arrival. We then went to our room which was average. There was no fridge no safe no balcony and we had a view off the roadside. However, the bed was comfy and shower was great. Food at first didn't seem too great but as the week went on it gradually got better. There is no entertainment in this hotel apart from a gentleman playing on a keyboard on some nights. The infinity pool really is just for kids but it's location is great as it leads u straight into the crystal clear sea. I would just advise u that u have to pay for your sun lounges but if u are not willing to pay there is areas where u can lay your towels out. Overall Opatija is lovely beautiful place the scenery is to die for. I would return but possibly to a different area with entertainment in hotel to keep kids entertained.

SMART Hotel has been just renewed, so recommend you to book as all rooms are now renovated (but no fridge). Staff are very friendly and helpful. Half-board is good, having "limited" options what to chose; only outdoor parking option exist in front of the Hotel, however you can go to SLATINA GARAGE for best rate/secured parking (like 500m from Hotel). Behind the Hotel the beach is just there (you can book room with Seaview- stunning), with outdoor sea water filled small swimming pool (for kids; just to sit and look at sea), and indoor sea w filled swimming pool (not only for kids, but bit small). Massages are great (extra price), and Lunch facilities in the near 2 Bar's. For Children animation programs are exist in cooperation in the next Hotel (H Adriatic), kids can really enjoy creativity, sports, teaming, international culture. Good choice for budget travels (calculate garage, parking on top) and also for families with kids and for those who "just" would like to stay at Hotel + beach and make vacation easier. Opatija is a wonderful city for all members of the family.

Hotel is newly reconstructed and well equiped. First row, with elevator from the room straight to the stairs into the see. Excellent cousine for breakfast and dinner with a small restaurant on the beach if you need a lunch. Hotel is friendly to the kids and to the pets. Reasonable prices.

Probably a great example of the common issue at the Adriatica coast - that the hotel managers believe the seaview is all it takes to satisfy a guest and charge them 100eur per night. My room was quite nice and I have no complaints but, everything else is average at most. The dinner was nice but the offer at breakfast was somewhat disappointing. This hotel has another negative thing in common with other Croatian hotels - there is never plant based milk served at breakfast (IN Slovenia it is served almost everywhere). Another thing that bothered me was that some of the waiters were dressed in jeans and sneakers + can't the hotel management handle the cost of a few suits!?!? It doesn't feel right to SE a person upserving your table dressed in denim trousers! The receptionists are fine as long as they don't have any guests :))). As soon as someone stands in front of them, they become annoyed. I even hear the receptionist complaining to a group leader (of 15 guests max), that it is hard to handle gruop checkin.is it really!?!? It is definitely not worth the money

Somewhat disappointed with our stay at this hotel. Check in was easy enough. We arrived at lunchtime and had to wait a couple of hours for the room to be finished which wasn't an issue. The reception staff were ok but never seemed very happy or amiable with the exception of 1 woman who worked the desk and went out of her way to be helpful. The room itself was clean and plenty big enough. However there was only 1 plastic chair in the room so you really had to sit on the bed at all times. We were in room 2011 and overlooked the main road. It was noted that the English guests seemed to be in rooms overlooking the road with no balcony whilst other nationalities seemed to have rooms overlooking the sea and marina. There were no tea and coffee making facilities in the room and no fridge either. Ironing was not permitted in the room and if you required anything to be ironed then you had to contact housekeeping where a charge was made that started from around £2 upwards. The curtains in our room were far too long for the window and consequently didnt open properly. We along with others had trouble with our air conditioning and in particular getting the aircon to run cold. We were told that the law in Croatia is that the aircon temperature in the room cannot be more than 10 degrees cooler than the outside air temperature to prevent the risks of such things as heart attacks. The food tasted fine and there was always something to eat but was very basic at times and very repetitive. Breakfast consisted of a choice of about 4 cereals, yoghurt, some fresh fruit, cold ham and cheese. For hot breakfast there was usually 3 types of egg - boiled, scrambled and omlette. There were spicy sausages every morning that had been cut into 4 or 5 pieces plus small cocktail type sausages. Some mornings there was bacon and other mornings meat that looked like cooked ham but was either spam or luncheon meat. Often in amongst this was brussel sprouts and carrots or brocolli. Seems a strange option for breakfast. There was never any fried eggs, tomatoes or beans etc. Dinner often meant a bit of a queue. The hot meals were first in the line up then salads and then the soup. We didn't see chips for the 10 nights we stayed here. They seemed to have not organised the layout particularly well. The evening meal was fine but limited options compared to other hotels we have stayed in. Desserts most nights consisted of cake cut into small oblong pieces. In addition there were bowls of what seemed to be a mousse. A couple of nights ice cream appeared but this was in very small quantities and went before most people got a look in. Beer and wine is available during the meal but there is no option for a tea or coffee at the end of the meal. Tea and coffee can be purchased at the bar but then this is terminated at 10pm and the bar itself then shuts very soon afterwards which we found very strange for a holiday hotel. There is a very nice bar 2 minutes walk from the hotel along the promenade towards Opatija called La Mare where the drinks are excellent and the staff very friendly. Most things at this hotel seemed to attract an extra charge. No safe in the room. You can hire a box at the rear of reception at a cost of 20 kuna or roughly £2.50 per day. The pool area is basically made up of a concrete floor (obviously with sunbeds to be used) and concrete walls behind and to the side of you. It reminded me of a prison exercise yard to be honest and not very attractive. The main pool is an area of the sea that they have cordoned off. The other pool is a childrens pool and not suitable for adults to use for anything other than sitting in. Not once in the 10 days we were there did we see the childrens pool get cleaned and the pool wasnt the cleanest with lots of concrete dust etc in the bottom. Beds have to be hired at a cost of 80 kuna per day or roughly £10 (this is for 2 beds) and if you want an umberella for shade then this is an additional 30 kuna per day which is roughly an extra £3.50. Some people purchased lilo beds from local shops and used these. What we didn't know before we went is that many places do not take credit cards for drinks etc so make sure you take plenty of cash. A lot of people ended up the last few days drinking in the hotel so they could then put these on their room bill which could then be paid by credit card. We booked a boat trip via the TUI rep and paid him by credit card The people who run the trip on behalf of TUI also operate from the promenade in the town and these like all of the other tour operators we spoke to only take cash. Our day trip known as Grill & Chill or Fish Bbq cost 320 kuna per person (roughly £40 each)and was excellent value for money and a really good day out. Other trips started at around the 150-180 kuna each. We met 2 women who were expecting a balcony room but ended up overlooking the road like the rest of us. After a couple of days they managed to get a sea view room with a balcony. Initially the hotel wanted to charge then 3000 kuna but after a lot of haggling the hotel dropped the price to 1000 kuna so don't accept the 1st price quoted for anything. This report probably sounds more negative than positive but we had a very enjoyable holiday. Opatija and the surrounding area is lovely. We have probably been spoilt by usually having all inclusive holidays and are not used to having to pay extra for things like safes, sunbeds etc and have always enjoyed a greater range of food options at other hotels.

We stayed here for a week. Nice hotel. The rooms were nice and clean. Bed was very comfy. Towels changed every day. I would of liked tea and coffee making facilities in the room. The food was quite basic and repetitive. We found it strange that the bar closed at 10 pm. Surely if you are staying in a hotel then the bar should be open to at least 11pm! After all, this was not an all inclusive holiday, we payed for our drinks at the bar.
