El Poblado certainly suited us very well because of the large number of excellent restaurants and bars and because it is very smart and clean. In fact there were a large number of people, both local and tourists, out on the streets enjoying themselves especially in the late afternoon and early evening. Many of the restaurants were within a hundred yards or so of the hotel.
It is also very easy to get to El Poblado metro station. Simply walk down Calle 10 for ten minutes or so. From there you can easily get to wherever you want in Medellin. Terminal Sur bus station is a little bit further on and the gateway to lots of places in coffee country including the wonderful Jardin.
The hotel itself is very smart and comfortable and the advice from the tourist desk made navigation of the metro system much easier than I had feared. We didn't eat there apart from the breakfast (which was fine) because of the plethora of first rate hotels literally just round the corner.
The reason for only 3 stars is the sum of multiple details. From the parking, which though included, was not guaranteed. It is in a shared public garage under the hotel. And it is a popular garage (precisely because the hotel is in a great location). So, because it is popular and is available to the public, if you return to the hotel around 8 PM on a Friday or Saturday you may not find a spot (which leaves you waiting in a queue of cars hoping someone will leave, or parking elsewhere in the neighborhood - not included...). Other disapppointing details: in the room, where paint and caulk are not applied in a quality fashion. In the bed, which though comfortable, had a squeeking sagging mattress. In their breakfast which included cheap and tasteless pastries. Which is inexcusable in a city that has hundreds of bakeries, many of which bake up some incredible delights at very low cost. Even the Colombian equivalent to Walmart (called Exito) produces inexpensive yet delicious pastries which they sell in bulk. There is no excuse for what was served at the Diez Hotel breakfast. In addition, and even more troubling, was the coffee served at breakfast. This is Colombia! How could they serve such bad coffee? You almost have to go out of your way to find poor quality coffee. Others have mentioned the mediocre breakfast, I have to agree. Then there is the gym. In our search we specifically selected hotels which offered a gym. Not many options in Medellin. What Diez has is three treadmills and two exercise bikes and maybe a half dozen free weights in a corner of the top floor behind the spa. And then there is the spa, nice in concept, open air, no walls to block the city views, with decorative bamboo poles separating out the massage areas. It is an attractive area, but is essentially unusable at this time. The staff was eager to schedule a massage or other service. But, as we usually do, we asked for a brief tour before scheduling. It was clear that the experience would have been far from relaxing due to a jack hammer and other construction noises from a building going up on that side of the hotel. The construction is not the Diez Hotel's fault, but is another of the details that reduced the overall experience.
The rooms very comfortable.
For work trips like the one I made, some details are needed, such as: A quite business center and more stable WiFi and the most important thing is that it is a bit difficult to rest at night, because the hotel is close to the nightlife and the music is heard until very late at night.
Breakfast: very weak, for a hotel of this category it should be better in quality.
Front Desk Staff: Not so good, could be friendlier and more available to resolve any issues that may arise.
In conclusion: Improving some details, it can be a great option for business travelers.
Hotel looks like a really nice Embassy Suites, if you are familiar with that, but with many cultural touches. Free breakfast was pretty good, along with the service.
Only thing is that my neighbor would tend to play really loud music in the morning, and the hotel didn't seem to care. Other than that, if you can book for less than $90/night, it's a solid place by American standards.

"There is a small charge for guests which is worth it. There are several restaurants including the 24/7 . The views upstairs are breathtaking. Schedule a time for the spa"Read full review
