We stayed in Sofitel Legend Santa Clara around a week and all in all, it was a fabulous experience.   At arrival we found something in the room, which clearly was not expected to be found in a hotel like this. This was our 3rd hotel after staying in Bogotá and Medellín and our expectations were high, as we really had great experiences in those cities.   The disappointment of my boyfriend after arrival, was not good for me. One of the things I love when travelling is seeing that smile on my boyfriend’s face which makes me enjoy my holiday 100%. We had a very nice suite; however, the first impressions were not very good, so my boyfriend wasn’t feeling it.   We said we would sleep and next day we would see what we could do. Next day we went for a walk and without saying anything (we are not complainers, if we don’t like a place, we leave or never return), the Guest Experience Department got in touch with us and apologized, which was good; I spoke with them, and they prepared a surprise for my boyfriend which quickly turned his impressions into a great one.   Our room was very nice, ocean view, nice bed, spacious and with a nice classical Cartagena touch. After speaking with Guest Relations, our stay just started to be amazing. Breakfast is good (some small faults depending on the waiter/waitress), but food was delicious.   This hotel is just like travelling to the past, with beautiful gardens, nice atmosphere, a great service, and overall warm people.   In my opinion, location is the best you can have in Cartagena, just some meters away from great restaurants like Juan del Mar or La Cevichería.  From front Office to Housekeeping, all were friendly and helpful.   We had a Butler Service, and they helped me to repair some very special shoes I had, and they found out the best way to help me with it.   Our stay was so good at the end, that we had a reservation in Isla Barú for the rest of our stay in Colombia, and we shorten it to comeback to Sofitel Legend Santa Clara, when we came back, we had the Gabriel García Marquez suite, which was really nice. Again, we found some issues in the room that were not up to the standards you expect from a hotel of this category; however, a hotel is made by people and people went above and beyond we expected.   We would like to thank all the staff, especially Ernesto, Johan, Kendry Rudy Luis (waiter) and Jimmy Bellboy for all they did to make us feel very welcome.

5-star Luxury with Both Bygone Era Splendor and Modern Amenities in the Heart of Cartagena’s Timeless Historic Center We thank the entire staff at the iconic Sofitel Legend Santa Clara for an unforgettable week at one of the most beautiful hotels in the world, rich in history and run by a staff who clearly embrace 5-star luxury. Stepping into the courtyard upon check-in you feel like either royalty of an ambassador visiting this gorgeous former convent rich in history and divine aesthetics. We were finally able to meet the concierge Diego who so meticulously had worked with me for weeks planning every detail, and were introduced to his fellow Butler colleagues Carlos, Ernesto, Rudy and Danny who were always just a text away to cater to even the slightest of needs. Room Division Director, Eric Arredondo, also so graciously welcomed us to the hotel which he clearly manages with pride, professionalism, and top-notch service. We thank you all ! The hotel is absolutely gorgeous. And the art, furniture, light fixtures, and every aesthetic are meticulously displayed throughout the entire hotel, evoking a timeless era that you and now living within. Timeless as it is, however, don’t let that make you think there isn’t every modern amenity you could need. The rooms are lovely, new, crisp, and complete with Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, multiple electronic ports, perfect AC and spot on water pressure/temperature. We were overlooking the pool which is beautiful, quite large, serene, and with plenty of lounge chairs, and a wait staff that caters to our every need. Just up the stairs is the gym which has all we need to stay fit during the decadent stay. Then there’s the full-service spa where we had incredible massages and facials that I highly recommend. And then, there’s the sleek outdoor cocktail bar, Botika, overlooking both the pool and the sea - and has live music after 6. The place fills up later in the evening and it becomes quite the hot spot right overlooking the walled city. We also dined at 1621 which is quite an experience. First, it’s in the home of the Clarisas nuns and you literally feel the history run through you in a very magical way. And then, the food and wine – impeccable! We went for the ten-course meal with wine pairing. We thought, if you’re going to do it, go for the full experience. Well, it did not disappoint. One course after the other was better than the next. And the wine – I’m not usually into pairing with multiple different types of wines. But I stood corrected as this made for a completely different experience meshing every course variation with a wine that brought it all to yet another level. And both our server and the sommelier were beyond delightful and so well informed that not only did we love the meal, but we also learned so much. So, I again thank the entire staff at this incredible hotel and highly recommend it to anyone seeking the same beautifully memorable experience we were so lucky to have lived and will remember forever.

Great spot for exploring old town cartagena 1. Rooms were great 2. Fast wifi 3. Nice showers / good water pressure 4. The gym was not the most impressive but I find this to be a minor thing 5. The hotel breakfast buffett is fantastic - never ate here in the evening since there were so many good options out and about but im sure it was fine 6. there is live music in the evenings, both at the pool terrace and also in the bar/club area. very fun 7. drinks are good, generally very well received 8. The pool is nice - staff is very attentive, can get crowded in the middle of the day but earlier/later side is not an issue

I stayed only for 2 days at the end of my trip to Columbia in October/November. It was short stay, however the one I will definitely remember for a very long time. Before I even begin, I wanted to mention that I’m seasoned traveler and used to stay in luxurious hotels around the World, so it is not so easy to surprise me, however Sofitel Legend did it and did it in very positive way. Not sure if reader is aware, however this is one of only 6 hotels of this top-luxury Sofitel sub-brand – Sofitel Legend. All of them were carefully selected and occupying historical masterpiece buildings with huge history behind. Sofitel Legend Santa Clara – is not an exception, it’s located on the premises of 400-years old former convent building, with private chapel and crypt still existing in our days. Location is unbeatable – in the heart of the Cartagena Old City, just throw away from the Caribbean Sea and within walking distance to all attractions Cartagena has to offer. From the moment you enter the hotel open-plan lobby through huge wooden double-doors you are finding yourself in another world – world of tranquility, serenity, relaxation, history and luxury. Lobby area opens to lovely patio – island of tropical greenery surrounded by 400-years old arcades. In the middle of this patio there is a small fountain and tables which can be used during the day for meals or drinks. Immediately upon arrival I was greeted by elegantly-dressed porters who took care of my luggage. As I’m Accor platinum member I was escorted directly to separate dedicated butler’s area (each Suite guest has private butler dedicated for the duration of the stay) for private check-in – there I was offered a seat, cold towel and glass of sparkling wine – was very nice way to start. After all formalities were completed I was informed that being valued Platinum member I was upgraded to Duplex Suite. Here I need to mention that hotel’s has 2 parts – Colonial – which is located in the 400-years old ex-convent building I was mentioning earlier and Republican – this is newer part built in 18-19th Century and which did serve originally as hospital. Staying is such historical property I obviously wanted to be in older part of it and this is what I wrote in my comment to the booking, so it was very nice of the hotel to offer me Suite which is located in that older part (just for info 2 biggest and most prestigious suites in the hotel Imperial and Presidential are actually located in the new part – I think reason being that part is closer to the Sea and can benefit from direct sea views, unlike Colonial part, same apply to rooms in both parts, so please note this when booking a room). So returning to the Suite description – it is located on the 1st floor of Colonial building – from the Suite name becomes clear that it’s split between 2 levels – on entrance level you have huge living room, with elegant furniture and dining area, it also has door to ceiling sliding door opening onto huge terrace with side sea view and sun lounges for relaxation and sun-bathing, bathroom completes the composition of this floor. Nice modern staircase (actually whole hotel is a nicely balanced mix of old and contemporary) leading to the 2nd floor with generously sized bedroom with super comfy bed (on a side note I really believe Sofitel My Bed is the best hotel bed I ever did experience and I that much believe in this statement, that even ordered some time ago parts of it from Sofitel boutique for my bed at home 😊) and main bathroom with huge walk-in shower. Suite has all amenities you would expect from luxury 5 star hotel, I especially liked Loto del Sur bath amenities (shampoo, shower gel, conditioner and body lotion) – they have extremely pleasant smell (this is local producer and you can hardly find it outside of Columbia – however it is really top quality product). On arrival I found welcome amenity in the room – and it was really generous one – some cheese & meat cold cuts, extremely tasty Colombian chocolate (branded Sofitel legend one), branded Sofitel Legend leather passport cover as well as some nice bath products – it was really very pleasant surprise form the hotel. One thing I forgot – each Suire in the hotel has its own name, mine was named after Padre Cayetano de Laura – main character of the novel “Of Love and Other Demons: by Colombian Nobel prize winner Gabriel Garcia Marquez. Actually, writer was inspired by the building where hotel is now located when he wrote his novel back in 1994 as actually that novel depicts facts which were taking place exactly in this convent in old times. Now from the room to hotel’s premises description – hotel despite being in the heart of old has pretty big territory as I already mentioned center of Colonial part is nice patio, while also there is another one in republican part and that one houses huge swimming pool inside it – you would never expect pool of such size in the centrally located historic property. Pool is surrounded by hundreds of sun beds which is very convenient as no matter how full hotel is (and on the dates of my stay it was fully booked) you always will find place near the pool. Pool has pool bar where you can order drinks and light food – so one can spend endless hours relaxing by the pool and seeping cocktails of biting smth delicious 😊 Hotel has few restaurants and several bars (apart form Pool bar I already mentioned, there are 2 more and each worth separate mentioning – one named El Coro Lounge Bar – is located in Colonial building and famous for being the only bar in Columbia with its own crypt (yes, yes it is located just above the old crypt and you can even enter it through staircase in the middle of the bar, it also has live music corner where different artists /bands perform in the evening. Another one is Botika bar – this is open-air bar in Republican part above the pool area directly facing the sea. Inspired by the convent's long-ago apothecaries, it serves cocktails prepared by hotel’s mixologists full of local spirit and interesting medical motives. For food you can visit one of several restaurants all of which serving exceptional food, however if you want to have real gourmet experience - you need to visit 1621 restaurant – flagship restaurant which is currently ranked #1 restaurant in Cartagena – I hope it tells the story. I tried food and cocktails in different locations around the hotel and hotel was always top notch. Breakfast though worth separate mentioning – it is being served both inside and outside (in the colonial patio) – food selection is extremely vast, while food quality is exceptional. One can find everything you would be able to think of for breakfast: cold cuts, hot dishes, eggs prepared whatever style you want (incl egg benedict etc), various exotic and less exotic fruits, variety of fresh juices, not even talking about tea and famous Columbian coffee. While another thing which really is standing apart is separate service for Platinum and Diamond Accor members they offer – being Platinum I stayed in huge number of Accor hotels around the world while never did see thing like this – it is separate open-air area where each table has it owner (with your name on the plate standing on the table) you have separate waiter who is there to fulfill any wish you might have. When I was coming to and end of the breakfast, I decided to order my favorite breakfast dessert – strawberries with whipped cream and chocolate sauce – none of the ingredients were available at the buffet and so I asked if it would be possible to bring me one – I was pleasantly surprised when I received positive answer and soon my sweet part of breakfast came with the smile. Here I want to mention thing which probably stricked me more than anything else in this hotel – Service, yes from the capital in this case as I have not enough words to describe how unbelievably good and impeccable this service was. Every member of the team was doing their utmost to make you feel relaxed, privileged and purely taken care of. I was really amazed that despite I was staying for really short time every Team member when coming to me always was greeting me by name and always was so welcome and accommodating as one can be. Nothing was really too much for them, whether it was request to create special cocktail in the bar, to bring extra towel in the pool, to order Coffee beans and bring it to my room, organize private tour of hotel premises (btw highly recommend to everyone as they offer it to guests on demand) or even to request my butler to have exactly same shower products I did have in my Suite to take away back home – everything was always done quickly, with highest quality and always with nice attitude and smile. My review would not be complete without saying separate thanks to Eric, Director of Rooms who greeted me personally on arrival and then was helping during the stay. Overall, quite honestly – it was probably one of the best services I ever experienced in the hotel, and it is worth a lot. So huge thanks to whole hotel Team – you are simply the BEST and can be proud of the level of customer service you deliver. I can recommend the hotel without any precautions to everyone looking for exceptional and luxurious experience in the heart of Cartagena. Personally, I will be waiting to return one day and really would like to bring my whole family with me to dive in to this epitome of relaxation and pure luxury.

I am giving this a 3 star review because it’s rate as a top hotel in the world. If you stay here make sure you request a courtyard or sea view on upper level. We had two rooms on the first floor and they are 5 feet away from the pool anyone at the pool has direct access to look in your room all day. You can also hear people at the pool all day and in the hallways at night. We only were in the room for 19 hours because we were only here one night and they would not allow early check in or late check out. Staff is very friendly but it is busy so not always able to be attentive. I would also recommend adding a self serve coffee bar for guests in the morning as I had to go to the restaurant and order and wait for a coffee with milk. Positives: beautiful courtyard and great location for walking around the center. Beautiful bar and delicious food at the restaurants with very friendly staff. We booked a tour through concierge and tour guide was very friendly. Concierge did not respond to my emails but are very responsive on whats app and in person. Again, this is a 5 star hotel so based on that expectation I give it 3 stars. If it wasn’t 5 star I would have given it 4 stars.
