We stayed for a total of 3 nights at Hostel San Fernando. The room was very clean, the air-con nice and cold. Mini-bar in the room and cable tv.
We stayed in the private-twin, which was a big room with an en-suite. The Hostal itself is perfect, it is secure, a 1 minute walk from

We stayed here for one night after allowing a taxi driver to suggest lodging for a quick stop over in Cali. Besides offering rooms with beds for guests to sleep in, "Hostal San Fernando" doesn't have one characteristic of a hostel. There is no kitchen to utilize, the environment

This middle-aged couple and the mother in law did stay with us on June 21st. That week all of the hotels in the area were booked due to various yearly events that occur during high season in Cali. Before they checked in they were showed the last 2 rooms available due to a last minute cancellation. As they were able to see the rooms have fridges, cable tv’s, private bathrooms with hot water, air conditioning, free wifi and 2 double beds. There are not kitchens in the rooms and they never asked me about one. Furthermore, nowhere in the defining standards of a Hostel is a kitchen ever mentioned. The staff member working that shift that night is very sociable if you speak to her in her language, unfortunately she is not bilingual. They paid $100,000 pesos for 3 people in one room which at the exchange rate of that day was around $17.50 dollars per person. We offered the second room available for the mother in law but they wanted to stay together. At 10:30 pm that night they came out of the room all decked out in “colombian salsa outfits“ and asked for a taxi to take them to Tin Tin Deo. The previously mentioned is a popular Cali discotheque that caters mostly to a younger crowd. My assistant called the cab for them. Less than a couple of hours passed and they came back with unhappy faces. No local goes to a salsa discoteque and returns that soon, so I wonder if something must've gone wrong, but didn’t ask since they were not very communicative. To believe that just anyone could make up reviews is saying that Tripadvisor is negligent in their work. They have basic technical parameters to weed out the fakes. It’s unfortunate that they had a bad time on their salsa night out but they should never get tips only from a guide book. It is important to ask the locals - especially if you are a salsa student from a US dance school - you will definitively look like a fish out of water here and more so if you lug your mother in law out dancing with you. A repeat customer that travels a lot showed me this quote from a travel blog which I find to be very true …… Travel to challenge yourself and to expand your horizons. But be warned, once you've gone beyond the U.S. border, you might begin to realize that the world doesn't revolve around us .

I can't recommend this place based on my overall experience.

First of all to be fair I will mention the good things about it.

Location is very good. The neighborhood is safe and a lot of good places to eat and hang out at night.

Prices were ok for what you get. Big room wit

Response from deskmanager, Front Office Manager at Hostal San Fernando

This guest is right, the way things unfolded made us believe that he might be trying to scam us and because of that the owner warned us to keep an eye on him. This might have been construed by him as rudeness. When he arrived the manager pulled his reservation made by a booking site and it was flagged unpaid. While he was filling out the registration form, the front desk asked him how he was going to pay. He responded that he had already paid with his credit card so it was assumed that the reservation information was incorrect. The following day the reservation was double checked and we were able to get a copy of the email sent by the booking agency to the customer that said and I quote “Your credit card will not be charged by (booking site) payment is to be made directly to the hotel at the end of your stay.” The owner of the hotel was consulted and she told us to ask him again but without making a fuss. He was asked again about payment and he seemed annoyed. It was suggested that he should check his confirmation email and left it at that. The following day that he was supposed to check out he told us he had just made another reservation for a third night and assured us he had also paid with his credit card. All that was said.. are you sure?? Again he was really annoyed. When the owner was told she said let’s wait till check out time tomorrow and if he insists that he has paid just show him a copy of not one but the 2 emails he received from his booking site that clearly say he had to pay before he left. That’s what we did and after he read the UNPAID part (highlighted by us) of the 2 emails he paid immediately and left without saying a word. It is unfortunate that a seasoned traveler used to making reservations online didn’t bother to recheck his emails after being asked more than once, missing the part that said “Your credit card will not be charged” on two separate reservation emails and continue to assure us that we were mistaken but we assume these things can happen to anyone and maybe it was really an honest mistake on his part!

I stayed at the Hostal in October of 2010 mainly because it was only a block away from the clinic where I went to have some surgery done.
I would say it’s a 3 star hotel, not luxury but met my basic needs which are AC, fast WiFi, good cable TV, plenty of hot water, a fridge for

thin, wornout mattresses, and a constant, nasty 'wet dog' smell always coming out of that kitchen hallway area - there are many cleaner (and friendlier) places to choose from in Cali.

It was my 2d time at this place, but I will never stay there again - not with SO many other ch
