Booked a two Night stay at the 5 Star Dann Carlton Cali 29-1 Feb. As a treat to my wife as we are in Cali visiting family. On arrival we were allocated is a room that was a corner back room facing a wall metal roof in just about adequate room, this was totally unacceptable an insult calling yourself a five star hotel, We were shown another room they said was an upgrade Well I thought it couldn’t get any worse but I think you did, I was made to feel like some sort of ultra diva because I wanted some sort of view, I’m not and I’m not in reasonable man it’s a city hotel I would expect a view of the city, I wasn’t after the hanging gardens of Babylon, Wildebeest on the Serengeti. Was about to get about the whole thing when they offered us a room in the adjoining tower, With hindsight we should’ve just left, But with my wife feeling unwell and me not wishing just to spend a couple of days on a holiday with my wife we accepted the third room, With a very acceptable Cityview Being on the 13th floor; The noise from the road outside was unbelievable We may have well have been kept in a tent on the ground next to it no sound installation whatsoever, We stayed two nights and experience I wish never to repeat

Response from Danncarltoncali, Guest Relations Manager at Dann Cali
Responded Feb 4, 2020

The Hotel Dann Cali should be a good choice for a place to stay in Cali for a few days. It is in a nice location in the El Peñon area. I found an attractive room rate online, and there were multiple positive reviews. But my three-day stay there was mostly an unpleasant experience. The Dann Cali is in a tower connected by a walkway over a street to the Hotel Dann Carlton Cali. The Dann Carlton is presumably newer and includes the main checkin desks, the bar, and other functions. The Dann Cali feels very much like a poor cousin to the main component. Getting to your hotel room means taking two elevators and using your hotel key card to open two passage doors, to say nothing of using it in the elevators. The inconvenience and tediousness of these treks starts to mount after a day or two. There were a number of conventions and meetings, which meant the elevators were frequently overwhelmed, and long waits were the outcomes. Taking the stairs made good sense in these circumstance, and the benefit of the exercise is not to be overlooked. The hotel advertises a pool and hot tub, but, bizarrely, the pool is surrounded by the hotel restaurant. Anyone who wanted to swim would be in the middle of diners having a meal. In the three and a half days I was there I did not see a single person using the pool or hot tub. Both my partner and myself really wanted to use the pool because of the hot Cali weather but just felt it would be too weird because of the layout. This was a major shortcoming for us A simple request to get a corkscrew to open a few bottles of wine turned into a completely ridiculous and protracted process. The concept of customer service and helping guests was in short supply. The room wireless was grossly inadequate. It would repeatedly kick us off devices, making it necessary to sign back in multiple times while were attempting to use them. It frequently functioned poorly or not at all. This is a real problem for people whose devices do not have cellular capacity. The wireless was generally much stronger in the lobby. In the current era good quality wireless service is a baseline expectation in hotels. When the room wireless failed to function when checking in for an airline flight, I turned to the business center on the main floor. Two of the three computers appeared not to function. The third did - very very slowly - but I had to go to the front desk to obtain paper. Hot water was frequently in short supply in the shower. We made the mistake of eating a late lunch in the hotel restaurant one day. The service was abysmally slow. Our server actually disappeared about halfway through the meal and was never seen again. Overall the food was at best average. The room itself was quite nice, and the bed was comfortable. So at a very minimal level, the basic accommodation function of renting a room was acceptable. So while the Hotel Dann Cali might be attractive because of price and location, I strongly suggest looking around at your other choices. I will not be returning. And I will not recommend the Hotel Dann Cali to others.

The hotel has renovated rooms, but they are hot and with a smell of dirty AC filter. The AC is window, not split, and it is too small and do not cool off the room. The bed is comfortable, the service is not consistent, some of the front desk personal are very nice others not so. The price is not worth what it is offered. I would not recommend staying at Dann Cali, maybe the Dann Carlton is better. Internet is weak and not consistent. Location is ok and breakfast too. There is no sound isolation, one can hear the noise from a very busy avenue next to the hotel. Poor free wi-fi connection.

I stayed here in 2016 for several nights and again for several more in early 2017. Personally, I liked the rooms pre-renovation but the removal of carpet is an improvement, and I think the showers are "green" now, which is good. There seem to be much fewer English cable channels than before but the internet was fast and reliable. Can still open the window in the room which for me is one of the best features of this hotel, the fresh air really helped me sleep. Talented piano player still in the lobby at night, and the computer room downstairs is helpful. Location ideal. Most of all though, you can't walk into this hotel without at least one or possibly two or three people eagerly taking your bags and guiding you in the right direction for check in etc. This hotel set the standard for helpful service for the rest of my trip, and no other place equaled it, not in Mexico, Peru, Guatemala, nor elsewhere in Colombia. All staff very warm and genuinely cheerful. Morale seems high. Management should pat themselves on the back. They've clearly made some good hires and improved the training of pre-existing staff as well. Breakfast much better too. Wait staff was fast on their feet without seeming rushed. Coffee better and all around food quality slightly but noticeably upgraded. As you can see I like this place. It's very charming, and an excellent value, I highly recommend it. Only criticism I can make really is that the pool is essentially unusable, for all practical purposes. It's right near the meal area and no one wants to swim when the dining room is full of diners. The gym is also outdated but good enough in a pinch.

I just spent 9 nights at the Hotel Dann in Cali, Colombia. As with all of my reviews I am going to provide a balanced, honest feedback on this property so that you can understand why I rated the property "Very Good" instead of "Excellent". The Hotel Dann and Hotel Dann Carlton are actually the same hotel connected by a sky walk across a street. If you make your reservation at the Hotel Dann (Not the Dann Carlton) you still check in at the entrance to the Dann Carlton. Here's what i thought was really good about the property: Location: I thought the location is great. It is located in a trendy area called el Peñón which is home to a great variety of interesting restaurants, bars, and night clubs within just a few minutes walk. It is also very close to an area called "San Antonio" which is kind of an artistic are with interesting shops, restaurants, and even a place that you can take salsa dancing lessons called arrebato caleño (web site is arrebatocaleño.com) where you can take salsa lessons for like $8/person per hour. Security: The security is excellent. If you rent a car there is a gated parking garage with 24 hour security as well as 24 hour security at the main entrance. There is also a good sense of control within the hotel itself. Also, the entire vicinity seemed very safe with a good presence of security and police in the area. The breakfast buffet was pretty good in the restaurant. The room service was very reasonable. My kids had room service for dinner or a late evening snack every day and it was reasonable. The bar on the first floor is also nice with a secure patio. The service in the bar and restaurant overall was pretty good. The Wifi was free but we did find ourselves often having to log in over and over. The room we had was very nice. It had 2 single beds + one double bed so we easily slept 4 people in the room with air conditioning and plenty of space. Here's what was a bit lower than expectation for this category of hotel and is the reason that I rated it "very good" instead of "excellent". The hot water was very inconsistent was rarely at a temperature that would be considered hot. We typically had to leave the shower running for about 10 minutes for it to warm up from cold to luke warm. The hot water situation should be much better at a hotel of this category and price point. The workout facility is very dated. The equipment is old and not up to the quality that you would generally find in a 4 or 5 star hotel. They really need to upgrade that facility. Finally, overall the service was good but I think some of the employees really aren't used to serving foreign customers. I had a couple of pretty frustrating experiences in the restaurant where I felt like the employees serving on the buffet line were a bit more lazy/rude with my family and I (gringos) relative to the way that they treated the Colombian guests. That said, the waiters did a great job and these experiences were more the exception than the norm but should not be happening at all in a hotel of this price point.
