I had a reservation at a different hotel that rudely turned me away upon arrival. Only a few hotels in Urumqi accept foreigners, so I had to book into the five-star China Southern Airlines hotel -- where the staff did not speak much English. It's comfortable, if dated. There were all the expected hotel amenities (not only toothbrushes and shampoo but also condoms, which seems to be typical of Chinese hotels). There was even a personal computer, but I had my own laptop and can't say whether it worked or not. Unlike a more modern hotel, there were too few electric outlets and no USB ports. Good, free WiFi (but beware the Chinese firewall). At $75 US/night, this was by far the most pricey hotel I stayed at in Central Asia, but I really had no choice.
Went to Urumqi by Southern Airline, choose Pearl Intl. hotel cost they said there is shuttle service from Urumqi airport to hotel. When we arr , we call hotel and they relied that no more free shuttle since 2017. They can provide transfer with contracted car company with CNY20 per person or CNY140 for a private transfer. Anyway we don't mind and paid for transfer. Hotel claimed it's a 5 star, in fact from lobby to room, everything is ageing and room is so run down, we did not expect much in Urumqi's hotels. In general, it was clean but I won't choose this hotel again.
Big room, good bed, and a wonderful view of Urumqi (22th floor). The hotel shows some signals of time passing, but it is yet very confortable. Good location, even when a little far from the market or the train station. Some guides mention a Southern Airlines bus between the airport and the hotel: there is not bus actually - but taxis are cheap enough.
I stayed in the Southern Airlines Pearl International Hotel for 2 nights while in Urumqi for business recently. This is a large hotel with a plaque in the lobby claiming to be a 5 star hotel. As with many hotels and restaurants in Urumqi, you are greeted with a walk through metal detector and x-ray of all bags prior to entering the lobby. Check in was fast and friendly. The hotel is used extensively for China Southern Airlines crew who are transiting through their Urumqi hub. The room was the big let-down. The room, corridors and all areas smelt of stale cigarette smoke. The bathroom had mould in the shower (see photo) and the wallpaper was peeling in multiple areas of the room. After 2 days all my luggage also smelt of stale cigarette smoke. Breakfast was included in my rate and included a range of Chinese dishes, with a couple of western items. The hotel had 3 restaurants (Western, Muslim and Chinese), and a KTV club. Wi Fi was provided in the room which worked effectively. Very limited English was spoken in the hotel. I stay in many local brand country hotels in China and unfortunately this one was one of the worst in terms of presentation, comfort and features, of hotels claiming to be a 5 star standard. It was also more expensive than most that I encounter in country areas. I found the whole experience to be quite uninspiring, and upon a future visit to Urumqi, I would choose to try a different hotel rather than return to the Southern Airlines Pearl International Hotel.…
The hotel is owned and managed by the Chinese Southern Airlines with special arrangement for those who patronised their flights. The rating is of Five (5) stars standing by Chinese standard. There are various types of rooms: single, deluxe, executive, salon suite even Presidential Suites @ RMB 20,800.00 (US$4,200.00 approx.) /room-night!. The rooms are clean, spacious and well provided for. Services are good. The restaurants are good but prices on high end. Location is good and near HONG SHAN area, which has many shops and good restaurants even the PARKSONS SHOPPING MALL near by. The hotel also provides free bus service to/fro airport for SOUTHERN AIRLINES passengers.
Me and my wife traveled to Urumqi for a family visit at it was amazing. This review is way past due as I stayed here 2 years ago but the hotel is perfect. Very clean and accommodating. The high efficiency of the airport is also very professional. We will be back.
I didn't know about this hotel and was expecting something mediocre like the Tianyuan Hotel close to the airport. The decor and facilities were a step up and the staff were very hardworking and helpful. The room overlooked a beautiful part of town and the reception has a good ambiance. he location helped greatly as I had dinner at nearby restaurants and got fruit and dried nuts from local marketplace - a must see for people from out of town. My clothes were laundered and pressed with a high degree of professionalism.
Having read the reviews, I wondered what I would find. As a full time traveler who spends lots of nights in China, I was ready for anything. I found that the Pearl is nice for a domestic hotel. By these standards, rooms are nice, staff is friendly, but few speak any English, and the hotel is near several large shopping areas in the center of town. I found the breakfast to be sub par, and the coffee especially so. The Chinese restaurant on the second floor (not the Muslim one) was good.
Funny smells, stained floors and carpet, hard beds, and lots of smokers sums up our experience at the Southern Airlines Pearl International. Air conditioning stuggles with the heat and facilities are generally worn and sad. Handed down from Kempinski, the hotel has seen better days and is seriously in need of a refit. However, the staff works hard, the breakfast buffet is okay and for the right price could be a jumping off point for the wonders of XinJiang. However, try not to spend more that one night.
