I stayed there with a "Trip-a-deal" tour. Tried to change money, but was unable to as they do have that option, and the ATM close by did not accept foreign cards. Staff can barely speak English but this was the majority of the population in the area. The area had lots of market stalls selling food and trinkets, but for decent food we could only get it at the hotel as everywhere else was just hotpot or all sorts of spicy food. Even at the hotel the food was mediocre. Watch out for traffic as zebra crossings are just decorations as the majority of the traffic in China do not follow it. This was the same as in Beijing, where I got beeped at by a bus driver. I was crossing a zebra line with green lights for pedestrian and the bus driver had a red light. Go figure!

We stayed at the Guangdong Hotel the second time in Oct 2014. This time round, with the tube system (Line 1) in operation, the entire Erqi Square (二七广场)and Dehua Xinjie(德化新街)have been spruced up (we saw cleaners cleaning & polishing the floor tiles at Erqi Square on both nights we were there), no more makeshift night markets, but instead, new retail shops are located in a new underground shopping area. We saw 3 openings (entrance/exit numbers 10-12) to the underground shopping mall right outside Guangdong Hotel (via CC&DD boutique) but we are unsure if they will lead directly to Erqi Square (二七广场)Tube Station as a few entrances/exits of this station have yet to be in use. If this entrance does not lead to the Tube station, it is ok, the next nearest entrance to Erqi Square Tube Station from the hotel is a mere 3-min walk. With this Line One, one can take a tube ride to the Zhengzhou Railway station (unsure how long, probably 2-3 min ride) and also Zhengzhou East Railway station (25-min ride). The same cheerful and polite front desk staff, and an always-smiling gentleman in suit whom we believe is the hotel manager at the lobby welcomed us. We had dinner at the Cantonese cuisine restaurant on the 4th storey again, the food was as good as last year apart from sashimi which we tried last year and the barbecued pork or Char Siew (叉烧) that we tasted this year. We found the latter contained too much fats for our liking. This is a 4-star hotel located within walking distance from Zhengzhou Railway Station (10-15 min walk but now can take a tube ride too). Please note that to walk to Zhengzhou Railway Station (old station), one has to brave oneself across one major road where motorists do not stop at zebra crossing to allow pedestrians to cross. We call this the nightmarish road (during peak period 9am-7pm). It is about 6 lane wide, 3 lanes per direction. The challenging part is when crossing each 3-lane road, cars and motorcycles come from the right direction, motorized-bicycles, trishaws, trolleys, bicycles loaded with goods that protrude well beyond the surface area of their seats may come from the opposite (wrong) direction. One needs the vision of a fly to see all on coming vehicles and other modes of transport from both direction concurrently. If one were to catch the Airport Bus from the International Airport 新郑机场Arrival Hall Door 5 (¥20/person), one has to negotiate this huge chaotic road to reach the hotel. If one can make it across this road on foot, one can cross any road in China. Motorists from other cities in China observe zebra crossing. Even@Zhengzhou's own newly-developed district, ZhengDong(郑东), motorists also observe traffic rules. If one is afraid to cross this nightmarish road, one can catch a cab from the airport directly to this hotel which may cost ¥100-150 (we paid ¥160, ¥150+¥10 for toll when we booked a cab from the hotel to the airport). The surrounding areas are a mix of new malls/new shopping streets and older buildings. Basically it is the old "city". Note: Zhengzhou has 2 railway stations and if one needs to find accommodation near the station where one is going to take a train from, ensure one checks which station the train is going to depart from. Guangdong Hotel is situated near Zhengzhou Railway Station (the older station) . Staying near the railway station is good for travellers who want to go to Kaifeng 开封,Luoyang 洛阳 or even moving onto another province by train on their own. Breakfast was exactly the same style as the year before, more towards the Chinese style than truly International style. The restaurant on the top floor still revolved in Oct, good for first-timers who want to catch the glimpse of the city. Lastly, if you want to buy some Zhengzhou's goodies for friends and relatives, there are many shops selling them around Guangdong Hotel. At where one alights from the Airport Bus (Zheng Zhou Hotel 郑州大酒店), there is one@Red Coral Hotel 红珊瑚酒店 (right next to Zheng Zhou Hotel) and also another one next to Yutu Hotel 悦途酒店,(next to Zhengzhou Train Station East entrance/exit/square (郑州火车站东广场)). If one needs to go to a bigger supermarket, there is only ONE such supermarket that we know of and it is a 15 min walk from Guangdong Hotel. Head towards Erqi tube station entrance @ Erqi Square, exit the tube station from the opposite side of the road and one will arrive at Hua Lian Shang Sha 華聯商廈. There are two separate towers with the same name, if one sees STARBUCKS, it is the wrong tower, just head for the Hua Lian Shang Sha 華聯商廈 with BHG (just like the BHG at Bugis Junction, Singapore) and there is a fairly big supermarket on Basement One. One can also walk on the overhead bridge that links 3 buildings to reach Hua Lian but it will take a longer time, 20-25 mins from Guangdong Hotel For cleanliness and convenience Guangdong Hotel offers, it is a hotel worth considering. In fact, Guangdong Hotel is the BEST hotel in that vicinity (Yutu 悦途 is very new, 1-2 years old but it is NOT opened to foreign guests). However, if ZhengZhou East Station 郑州东站is going to be more developed and brand new hotels going to sprout there, then it may serve as a good alternative as hotels around ZhengZhou train station (old) are at least 30 years old.

Yesterday, after reserving two months in advance, I arrived to the hotel. I was happy to see the hotel was in the center of the city in a very interesting location. Unfortunatly, I was not able to stay at the hotel because they told me they did not have a licence to recieve foreign tourists. They did not speak to me in English, I think because they did not with to confront me. Fortunately, I was with my chinese business partner who was able to speak with them. Finally, they sent me off to a lower quality hotel in a much worse part of the city. I really wish they had let me know that I would not be able to stay at the hotel, I would have chosen another one in a better location. They say they sent me an e-mail but I never got it (not even in my spam mail).
